I'm really shocked - cousin of mine has pic of herself on Facebook blacked up. She is white. The picture is of her at a fancy dress party - she has covered her face in dark brown stage make up and is wearing an "Afro" wig and Rastafarian style striped hat.

Her husband is also blacked up.

bunchoffives do you have the ability to read? If you can re-read my post

bunchoffives · 31/08/2014 18:35

I know black people are equal Buffy. Of course we are. I was making a point. Just because some privileged twat says you're not equal it doesn't mean that that is true.

If we were discussing the refusal of a local political party to select a black person as a candidate even though they were the best qualified, then I would be shouting racism as loudly as I could. But dressing up as a rasta for a party? Not so much.

HeffalumpsnWoozles · 31/08/2014 18:36

Angelina Jolie played Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart & had to wear make up for the part or black up if you like. What's the opinion on this? Should the part have gone to a person of colour? Was she wrong to take the role & was the studio wrong to have her portray someone if a different ethnicity?

Serenitysutton · 31/08/2014 18:37

Bunchoffives that's clearly not what she meant Hmm

More WHAT ABOUT-ITUS but why would it be racist to dress up as a footballer or cheerleader? What's so hard to understand about blacking up being different to the billion things mentioned on here?

JanineStHubbins · 31/08/2014 18:37

There was a lot of criticism of that casting, Heffalumps.

Storm, your post is astoundingly PC; it made me want to heave.

Whomever's parents dressed them up as a box of tampons I have nothing but disdain for. What a pair of fruitloops.

MrsWhiskersonTheFirst · 31/08/2014 18:40

How is this ridiculing them for the colour of their skin? Is wearing a black wig when you have blonde hair ridiculing people with black hair for the colour of their hair?

Bulbasaur · 31/08/2014 18:41

Bulbasur are you saying black people are not equal?

That is exactly what I'm saying.

Trying to twist it to make me seem racist is counter productive.

Black people are only equal on paper. In practice, they are disadvantaged compared to white people whether you want to pull your head out of your ass to see it or not.

maggiethemagpie · 31/08/2014 18:41

OP - Why don't you just call the police rather than report her to FB. And the daily mail whilst you're at it (disclaimer: I'M BEING SARCASTIC)

inlawsareasses · 31/08/2014 18:42

I saw a pic recently of snoop dog with white makeup on dressed as a white geek, I thought it was funny

HeffalumpsnWoozles · 31/08/2014 18:42

Janine I remember opinion being very split on the fact she was cast. As far as I remember AJ became good friends with MP whether this was true or not is another matter. Just wondered what everyone here thought?

PistolWhipped · 31/08/2014 18:43

..and I'll tell you summat else: I don't consider myself, as a white British working class woman, to be privileged; I'm not permitted to wear a crucifix round my ruddy neck; I'm not allowed to to say 'no' to certain cake orders at my bakery.

Privileged my white, heterosexual, Christian arse.

MrsWhiskersonTheFirst · 31/08/2014 18:43

Historically, Irish people have been oppressed. I don't see too many of them crying 'racist' at people throughout the world celebrating St. Patrick's day. (I'm Irish btw)

Serenitysutton · 31/08/2014 18:44

Mrs whiskerson you're just being deliberately obtuse. No one in their right mind would compare black hair with black skin

Or bring st Patricks say randomly into the thread. You're making no sense.

Serendipity30 · 31/08/2014 18:45

Blacking up is offensive. I have never met a Black person who has seen this and said haha that is so funny.

I think most thinking Irish people would be pretty offended if the type of portrayals of Irish people in the 19th century were considered suitable fancy-dress costumes today, MrsWhiskerson. Which is closer to the parallel you're trying to draw.

Serendipity30 · 31/08/2014 18:47

Crying racist? really!! give me strength

JanineStHubbins · 31/08/2014 18:48

Don't think Pistols is kidding, sadly.

No I most certainly am not kidding. All of my cultural values and beliefs are trodden on every single day. How is that being privileged?
