to think that despite the wealth of drossy 80's films, Parenthood is just great?!

The MN pushy parents, the poor kid seeing the psychologist, the awful moment with the powercut and the dildo...
Seen it about 20 times but it's so watchable!

Used to love that film, not seen it for ages!

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 30/08/2014 23:44

Singing "close to you!"
A young Keanu reeves
The diarrhoea song in the car
Yy to the dildo!

Fab film I'm recording to watch another day!

Whiskwarrior · 30/08/2014 23:47

One of my absolute favourite films and I love it more each time I watch it. Steve Martin at his very best.

Cowboy Dan, 'oh, Gaaaary', Keanu Reeves being very sweet and endearing (as well as his usual dudeness), Joaquin Phoenix (I want to hug him after he phones his Dad and his Dad just dismisses him). And my favourite bit:

'Oh yeah? Well if my Grandmother's so smart, why is she sitting in OUR NEIGHBOUR'S CAR?!?'

I saw it at the cinema when I was 15 and I've loved it ever since.

CatKisser · 30/08/2014 23:47

Yes to the diarrhoea song.
"I learned it at camp!"
"Ah, that was money well spent!"

Oh it's the awful bit where the kid wants to stay with his dad and the dad fobs him off. And that's Joaquin Phoenix!!

I love it too Smile. It's timeless and has some amazing performances. Diane Weist's reaction to finding her daughter's compromising photographs are awesome "Oooh...here's one for my wallet!"

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 30/08/2014 23:50

Just realised I haven't watched it since becoming a parent!

I always thought that was leaf pheonix who played Gary?

CatKisser · 30/08/2014 23:51

Pfffft, YES to Diane Weist and the photos!
"There's so much about this that bother me, Julie I don;t know how to separate it!"

CatKisser · 30/08/2014 23:51

Leaf Phoenix was Joaquin Phoenix' real name.

OP posts:
Whiskwarrior · 30/08/2014 23:52

Leaf Phoenix IS Joaquin Phoenix - he changed his name when he grew up.

Because Leaf is just silly, whereas Joaquin...Grin

MissOtisRegretsMadam · 30/08/2014 23:53

Blush ooops!

The kid named cool who the grandparents take on and raise.
Julie was a great actress I wonder if she did anything else?

cruikshank · 30/08/2014 23:53

I like the daughter's comeback too - something along the lines of I thought someone in this house should be having sex with something that doesn't require batteries. Very cruel but very funny. Also, Keanu (I think), on being told by the grandmother that she is shrinking, saying 'BUMMER'.

GoingToBedfordshire · 30/08/2014 23:53

Such a quotable film. Dd3 is Justin. "She likes to butt things with her head"

Love Dianne Wiest especially.

gincamparidryvermouth · 30/08/2014 23:55

One of my favourite movies ever! YY to the bit about the neighbours' car!

Whiskwarrior · 30/08/2014 23:55

Martha Plimpton played Julie - she was also in The Goonies and now is in a sitcom (Raising Hope?) which has been on Sky1 and is doing quite well, I think.

CatKisser · 30/08/2014 23:56

Also Martha Plimpton, Julie, was engaged to Rover Phoenix, Joaquin's older brother who died of overdose in LA in....early 90's?

OP posts:
CatKisser · 30/08/2014 23:57

River, not Rover!!

Love this film!!!!
I don't trust anyone who says they don't like it (apart from FIL who has a physical aversion to Steve Martin, will let him off)

Strokethefurrywall · 31/08/2014 03:51

Taylor - "What was that?"
Karen - "Errr.... it was an electric ear cleaner"
Taylor - "It was kind of big!"
Grandma - "It sure was!"

Effing love that film!!!

WilliamShatnersPants · 31/08/2014 07:47

Did anyone get into the show Parenthood that was a loose spinoff from the movie?
