You have a nanny and a child in private school. Come on, you obviously have plenty of money, you just choose to spend it all on your choices. You are not skint are you?? AIBU to think this.
Have had to listen to someone moan and moan and moan about how they never have any money left and are always "skint". But they have an almost full time nanny for their younger child (and at times I know mum is having a coffee/going to gym etc while nanny is there, not working), and older child is at a private school. Thats not skint in my book.

We no longer see relatives who complain about having no money but their FB stream is a constant brag about the 4k holiday, polo trips and house that Daddy bought them.

rainbowinmyroom · 29/08/2014 11:56

YANBU.

MarchEliza · 29/08/2014 11:58

You are correct. I can't afford all those things and I still don't consider myself to be skint.

GreenPetal94 · 29/08/2014 11:59

Well they could actually be in debt caused by the nanny and the private school.

But if so they shouldn't moan about it as its self induced.

I'm not keen on anyone moaning about being skint, its just they haven't budgeted money to spend on the thing they are skint for. If that is say going out for a meal, then there are plenty of people who rarely go out to meals to save money and never moan at all.

ThatBloodyWoman · 29/08/2014 12:03

YADNBU.
Its pretty offensive tbh.

Suzannewithaplan · 29/08/2014 12:03

Isn't it more the failure to 'cut your cloth according to your means' ?

I imagine after the school and nanny expense there is little cash left over, but these are choices they have made. It's hardly the same as not having enough money to buy food or put the heating on!

Aeroflotgirl · 29/08/2014 12:08

Yanbu they don't know what skint is, down to the last £20 in your bank account with 2 weeks to go until the next payment.

sashh · 29/08/2014 12:08

I'd like to be skint if that's the case.

Fairylea · 29/08/2014 12:08

Yanbu and it's an insult to those who are genuinely struggling.

Direct them to jack munroes blog Grin

Drquin · 29/08/2014 12:09

Well, everyone's "skint" when (if) they spend ALL the money they take in ....

But some people clearly will have more discretionary spend to play about with.

ShadowStar · 29/08/2014 12:10

Well, I suppose that they may not have a lot of disposable income left over after forking out for the school fees and nanny's salary.

But I agree that, given that they've made a choice to spend their money on that instead of using a cheaper alternative, it's not really on for them to moan about being skint.

So YANBU.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 29/08/2014 12:12

suzanne is right - failure to cut their cloth. Annoying to have to listen to.

I have a friend who is genuinely up shit creek financially now. She got herself there though - credit card debt due to multiple holidays.
Complains she is broke and can't afford £2 in transport but then spends £15 on a day out the next day.

Aeroflotgirl · 29/08/2014 12:13

Struggling to afford new shoes for your kids who need them, and to put food on the table. I suggest next time they say they are skint, to do voluntary work for shelter or the soup kitchens.

Viviennemary · 29/08/2014 12:16

I knew somebody who was always complaining about being hard up and I felt quite sorry for her. Struggling to pay the mortgage couldn't afford this that and the other. Turned out they had tens of thousands worth of shares that they didn't want to sell. Confused

MehsMum · 29/08/2014 12:17

YANBU. It's like people who moan about having 'No money! Nothing! Completely SKINT by the end of the summer!" when they've had two weeks away at a villa with a pool, sent all their kids off on a week-long camp at £300 a pop, and drive a smart car.

Glad I'm not alone in finding that kind of moaning insanely annoying!

WanderingTrolley1 · 29/08/2014 12:18

Maybe mum is in debt - as are many these days...

Egghead68 · 29/08/2014 12:20

It's annoying. I know of someone who owns three properties (a 4-bed house in London, a farm and a large house overseas) who is complaining of having no money to the extent that a friend is paying her living expenses (and vast wine bill) "for the sake of her mental health".

RiverTam · 29/08/2014 12:22

but then you can't allow anyone to say they are skint if they have any money to spend on anything that isn't an essential. And what one person calls an essential isn't always what someone else does.

Suzannewithaplan · 29/08/2014 12:23

Failure to distinguish needs from wants, and just bad financial judgment, eg getting into debt for luxuries such as holidays.
Not thinking ahead or thinking things through, spending money on your image to give the appearance of success but not leaving enough to pay for basic necessities.

Feckless or thick, or some combination thereof?

Iconfuseus · 29/08/2014 13:13

YANBU, but I think you'll drive yourself crazy stressing about it. It's best just to let it wash over your head and laugh at their naivety.

We have a connection who regularly complains about their lack of money and impoverished lifestyle. We know for a fact that they are in a very comfortable financial position, mortgage paid off, full time employed etc etc.

We avoid discussing money now because it's so embarrassing to hear them go on.

kormasutra · 29/08/2014 13:19

My ds's dad is always "skint"
This summer he's been to Mexico and Cyprus, without ds of course.
New house/car and always moaning he's got no money.
Him and his wife work full time, no other dc.
It makes my blood boil that he's given us the same measly maintenance since we split up ten years ago!
Skint my arse:)

aubreye · 29/08/2014 13:23

YANBU. The area of our town we love in, everyone is fortunate enough to go on at least one holiday a year and send there kids to a private school. I accept that I am NOT skint yet my next door neighbours claim that they are skint as they can't afford there five horses to stay in a stables anymore (really?)

dreamingbohemian · 29/08/2014 13:24

THANK YOU

This drives me crazy on MN, the number of times I've seen people with household incomes in the six figures complaining they're skint.
