To buy my DS an iPad for his birthday?

He's going to be 4, and I think it's be a great idea for him to have his own. He watches movies on mine at the weekend, we take it in the car for long trips, and it's got some games and stories on there too. I'd love to be able to free up space on my iPad by giving him his own.

It's just a posh LeapPad isn't it really?

My mum is getting all incredulous and puffy cheeked about it, but I had a Sega Megadrive when I was about his age and played on it after school with my friends. At least this would get more use! She seems to have forgotten that bit though Grin

I think, if you can comfortably afford it, then get him the iPad as he's used to using yours. Anything that doesn't work as well or the same is just going to end up with him wanting yours instead.

Mind you, the new one is due out soon - I'd probably get the bike now (he'll get more use out of it now than at Christmas anyway), then when it comes out yourself the new one and give him your old one.

iPad or iPad mini??

Anyway, ignore your Mum. It's 2014 not 1984 - it's a different world :)

ziggiestardust · 27/08/2014 16:24

Bit of a bitchy way to put it as well... Who's pissed on your chips today?!

ziggie don't let yourself get wound up, some people just have to have a pop anytime ipads are mentioned Wink

ziggiestardust · 27/08/2014 16:25

I don't really know whether iPad or iPad mini... Is there a difference other than size?

Agree the world has changed Wink my mum seems to remember things quite selectively Grin

MrsTerryPratchet - maybe I am but I do prefer the usability of an iPad.

Terrierterror · 27/08/2014 16:26

He could use yours for apps. The films will be what's taking up the room. There's nothing wrong with buying him his own one if that's what you want to do.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 27/08/2014 16:27

I don't think so really - I just think for little hands and travelling the mini is great, but if you have a full size and he's used to it....

Anyway, as I said, I'd get myself the new one and give him my old one Grin

Oh yes - I call it Rose Tinted Re-do Grin

I think, if I were planning to get a tablet for a young child, I would get one of the cheaper ones, in case it did get damaged.

What about the point about the bike being more useful now than at Christmas?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2014 16:31

They are very ergonomic curious and there's problem with that. If that's what you like. It's just the idea that they must be worth the money if they are expensive. Have a look at the history of diamonds if you want a shock!

Pinkje · 27/08/2014 16:31

Ipad mini is a great idea but be warned, even in a bomb proof case it will get damaged if something else (say your big brother's headphones) get thrown at it!

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/08/2014 16:33

there's no problem, obviously!

curiousgeorgie · 27/08/2014 16:36

Pinkje - it sounds like you speak from experience... I take that and raise you a buzz lightyear making a landing from very high up... Confused (At least it was DH's Wink)

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 27/08/2014 16:37

Pinkje - Did you shout or cry?

Do people normally get insurance for them? (other than them being on the household insurance which I'd never use for one item).

ziggiestardust · 27/08/2014 16:42

www.lifeproof.com/en/ipad/

I'd put it in one of those.

If you do buy one, get it from currys with the whatever happens cover, no excess if he does accidently break it.

My DD age 5 uses pads in school, and she uses mine until I can afford to get her 1 of her own.

Bikes are not a seasonal thing.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 27/08/2014 16:47

No one said 'bikes were a seasonal thing' Hmm but when it's pitch black when they come out of school - snowing/icy/pissing with rain and freezing cold - they do tend to get just that little bit less use of them than they do the rest of the year and when it's Brand New it's nicer to have fine weather to learn to ride it.

AgaPanthers · 27/08/2014 16:51

I have ipad, Android, and Windows Phone, Android is definitely best.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 27/08/2014 16:53

Aga - I think you mean - 'The one I prefer'... or even 'The one I think is best' surely don't you? :)

AgaPanthers · 27/08/2014 16:56

No, I speak for all humanity.

PMSL Bike

OhYouBadBadKrillitane · 27/08/2014 16:57

Where do you go from there though? What will you buy him in 2/5/10 years time? Better to teach them when they are young to be content with less expensive items and then when you do get them the odd expensive item as they get older they really appreciate it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/08/2014 16:58

AgaPanthers - "No, I speak for all humanity."

She does - we had a meeting! WinkGrin

ziggiestardust · 27/08/2014 17:04

But ohyou you could say that at any age really. It's not like it's a competition. There will always be something he wants/needs regardless of what I buy him now.

What if his birthday was in December.

Who is to say he will get more use out of a bike now.

He is 4 and just starting school he will be tired, but by Christmas will be used to school.
