If I managed to get het up about every patronising comment made during these campaigns my head would explode with rage I think

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/08/2014 21:38

#patronisingbtlady is trending on twitter and is appended to posts and memes pertaining to this evenings rather badly judged BT advert. I dont think it was being applied to anyone in this thread.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 26/08/2014 21:41

#patronisingbtlady is a Fb/Twitter joke re tonight's broadcast on behalf of Better Together. It's a monologue by an "ordinary mum" who can't quite spare the time to do a bit a research into the issues, so she'll just vote No. Massively insulting to women generally (and if I was No, I'd be changing to Yes out of sheer rage!) but it's providing a lot of fun for some.

Here's a better link for #patronisingBTlady

Pinkrose we need the clock change or we wouldn't see much daylight in the winter. :)

"A better link"... more like one that's got an additional agenda slapped all over it.

OhBuggerandArse · 26/08/2014 22:01

Dear Chelsy,

No, the origin of Cairngorm is not likely to be Pictish. It is very simply and intelligibly Gaelic.

The only Pictish words we have are those which survive in a very few place or personal name elements. Neither Carn nor Gorm is one of them. They are Gaelic, as are most names which incorporate Pictish elements.

The current scholarly consensus is that the pre-Gaelic speaking inhabitants of Northern Britain spoke a Celtic language that may have been a branch of or related to Brittonic. Nobody believes in the wilder theories like Basque any more.

By the way, did you know that Gaelic was spoken right into Central and Southern Scotland? You might like to look here and here for some information that can clarify this for you.

Yours,

A professional practicing Celticist.

Still not worth £24 million though Smile

prettybird · 26/08/2014 22:06

Have to say, I'm one of those people that wishes we stays on British Summer Time the whole time. I hate the clocks going back in the winter.

I love the fact that in Iceland, which has fewer daughter hours than us and is further to the West of us, yet in winter is on the same time as us. This means that what daylight they do get is in the afternoon and can be appreciated more.

OOAOML · 26/08/2014 22:09

I'm getting confused with all this talk of politics. I don't even know the name of whassisname - the First Minister - you know - him aff the telly. Please can everybody stop discussing politics and just eat their cereal.

Ah, simpler times, when every second person wasn't expected to be an expert geologist/economist/international lawyer Wink

TeamScotland · 26/08/2014 22:23

Wow. That advert. Just wow.

Yes have it in the bag now.

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 26/08/2014 22:26

FannyFifer · 26/08/2014 22:26

I meant to add WinkWink along with my link.

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 26/08/2014 22:26

Yes TeamScotland, because huge swathes of people have their mind changed by a two minutes advert. What is it with people being so determined to declare victory over minor things weeks before the vote?!

squoosh · 26/08/2014 22:29

Yes 'have in the bag' because of an ad?

Mmmmkay.

cozietoesie · 26/08/2014 22:32

And that is why I'm concerned about divisions and the aftermath. Whatever the vote, there will be many many very unhappy people in Scotland. That situation gives little room for glee.

DannyFifer
On the UKIP MEP he got what 10% of the vote of a rather low turn out so not really representative.

But Eck and co and many on here are always trumpeting about how lovely everyone is in Scotland so really there should be none. Scottish UKIP supporters don't even have the feeble excuse that we even have high numbers of immigrants.

The average vote was 10% probably kept low by the fact Edinburgh had only 7% UKIP support and Glasgow around 8. I checked every constituency and there were rural constituencies at 12%-13% which frankly , is disgraceful.

blackcats73 · 26/08/2014 22:44

As an impartial English person lurker I find this debate fascinating. I used to dream of such a socialist utopia described in what the yes voters think Scotland would be like if independent. If you vote yes, I hope it happens, but I am still struggling to work out where the lovely cash is coming from. Does the rest of the Uk steal it all at the moment? It can't just be trident surely?

`If I was Scottish, based on what I've read, I reckon I'd have voted for an independent Scotland in my teens and early to mid twenties but if I lived there now (I'm an old lady) I'd vote no. It's a lovely idea but I don't think it would work.

Good luck to you if you vote aye though.

FannyFifer · 26/08/2014 22:45

You don't think the advert is patronising?

They are entitled to their opinion of which I am sure they think is the correct one.
I prefer the opinion of the people mentioned in bottom half of article though.

OP posts:
StatisticallyChallenged · 26/08/2014 22:53

You think it really matters, in the context of the decision that we're making, that an advert is patronising? Plenty of the Yes campaign materials are patronising or just plain lies.

How about focusing on what's important?
