Hi Mumsnet. I'm a long time lurker/ sometimes poster but have namechanged.

I have ptsd and past childhood abuse issues which I am dealing with with a private therapist. Had nhs assessment before but they dismissed me, so no crisis team available etc.

I'm in a very bad place tonight and have no one to call etc. Last night I cut myself for the first time in a long time, and have been doing other self harming things. The suicidal thoughts that began again last week are really threatening me tonight and I don't know if I can keep myself safe. I have taken 15mg of valium but it;s not helping with the emotional state Im in, just making me feel a bit drunk.

I think unless the valium fully kicks in soon and starts to sedate me, I need to get some emergency help tonight, like going to a hospital. I have never been in a hosputal before and I don't know which one would be best to go to for this. I am in London, and I think Guys and St thomas's are connected to the maudsley psychiatric hospital, so would guys + thomas maybe be the best a and e dept to go to?

What will happen if I go? Can they give me stronger drugs to calm me down tonight?

If anyone has any experience of this, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you x

Just PMed you

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 23/08/2014 21:25

Can you afford to get a taxi?

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 21:28

I'm not too far, Arsenicy, about half an hour on tube which is fine by London standards, there is a closer hospital but I'm scared to go there for a really stupid reason that I cant talk about but involves another health issue and bad associations (even though they were really kind lovely staff there).

Doesn't sound remotely stupid. You don't need rubbish associations tonight. Go where feels right.

Try whothehell's three steps and sit down for as long as you need to in between them to get yourself steady. We're all here Smile

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 21:34

Apparently KCH is a good choice too but it doesn't make too much difference.

Insecurelyattached · 23/08/2014 21:43

Thank you all so much.

Feel really spaced and weak, so think I will have something to eat before travelling to the hospital.

Also so worried because earlier I left my therapist a voicemail crying and a text because I was panicking and felt like I needed to call somebody, and while she won't be angry with me because she's very kind, I feel so guilty intruding on her personal time like that. I'm worried she will feel disappointed with me when she finds them on Tuesday.

Please go to Tommys or KCH - it doesn't make much difference which. Nobody will think you are wasting their time, I promise. It's their job to help people like you, it's what they're there for. Please go xx

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 23/08/2014 21:54

Sensible idea to have something to eat.

Are you sure you can't afford a taxi. I don't like to think of you tubing across London feeling like this :(

x2boys · 23/08/2014 21:55

I agree with andywarhol it is the job of the mental health professional to look after you trust me non e of us think people our wasting our time that's what we get paid for !

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 23/08/2014 21:59

OP - A&E Stands for "Accident and Emergency".

You may not have had an accident but the current state of your mental health is an Emergency - you are in danger of hurting yourself so you MUST act.

If you can't get there ring 999 - I did when my DH had a mental breakdown several years ago. He was punching walls, sobbing and looking for tablets to take. The 999 service coupled with the crisis team and the follow up support saved his life.

Dont be ashamed/embarrassed to ring for help.

bunchoffives · 23/08/2014 22:00

Yes to eating something. And drink some water OP too. You might be in for a wait at A&E on a Saturday evening so be prepared.

whothehellareyou · 23/08/2014 22:00

If it makes you feel safer OP, take something comforting with you while you travel, something to keep you 'grounded' and focused to stop your mind racing. A coin in your pocket or a hair grip to keep your hands busy. I usually have keys - they make a good weapon against strangers, sound 'jingly' and comforting to me.

Your therapist will be really pleased that you felt able to call them and leave a message when you needed to offload. That is what they are there for. Do not feel guilty, calling them when you need them is what they are there for.

Are you on your way to hospital yet? Remember we are all right beside you - walking at your pace.

Queenofknickers · 23/08/2014 22:00

Loads of good advice here - I'm just offering a hand and a hug x

ninetynineonehundred · 23/08/2014 22:02

Insecurity your therapist won't mind. Good luck getting through tonight. I know it feels really scary and insurmountable but you are asking for help and that's the right thing to do.
We are all here if you need to post.

ILovedYouYesterday · 23/08/2014 22:02

I recently had to take a relative to hospital for a similar reason. You'll feel so much better once you are there. We had a very long wait in A&E which was hard but it was where she needed to be at that time and, once in the system, she was very well cared for. Good idea to have something to eat in case you have a long wait but get yourself there as soon as you can. Sending positive thoughts and virtual hugs in your direction.

Mnetreader · 23/08/2014 22:07

I have just sent you a pm.

Hang in there. You will get through this.

We are all here for you.

God bless

aNoteToFollowSo · 23/08/2014 22:09

Good luck OP. You are courageous to have posted as you did, and to be seeking help and advice. Please think of all the MN'rs behind you to give you further courage to take action. Flowers

x2boys · 23/08/2014 22:12

Do you feel like you need admission at the moment op ? I ask this because mental health beds are sadly becoming increasingly scarce at the moment if you feel unsafe please stress this to whoever you see and they will do there up most to ensure you get admission to somewhere safe .and they will make a judgement on your assessment .if they can't offer admission. They maybe able to offer follow up care over the bank holiday period .

ArsenicyOldFace · 23/08/2014 22:13

How are you doing OP?

Mnetreader · 23/08/2014 22:13

I agree that ringing 999 is a really good idea if you don't feel up to going to A&E. Please call now if you don't feel strong enough to make the journey.

We are all here for you.

VSeth · 23/08/2014 22:20

If you dont want to use the tube then I can pay for an Adison Lee taxi to hospital for you if you want? You don't need to speak to me. I can do it over the phone with them, they can collect you from your home or another place handy for you. It will be pre paid.

Let me know here or a pm. Very happy to do this for you
