AIBU?

To not want this kid to poo in the cafe?

Was at a cafe today and a lady pulls out a potty and allows her son shit. Just there openly not trying to hide it. The cafe was packed full of people eating too Confused

Her friend then pulled out potty
and was going to get her
daughter on but we complaied before it happened.

The toilets were out of order however there were loos about 10 second walk outside

They both thought we were UR for suggesting they use the other toilets and we don't know how hard it is potty training twins ( we have twins in our immediate family).

One of them started crying and the shouted at us then left.

AIBU to think this disgusting and not something people want to see when trying to eat our lunch?!

Tut tut, baby PFB doesn't like the energy in that bathroom and couldn't possibly poo in there.

I work on the counter in a bank and a few weeks ago a woman pulled out a potty for her toddler whilst in the queue when he said he needed a poo. Luckily he changed his mind but what the bloody hell did she think she was going to do with the contents?

Shock

I agree Scouse. People get very used to things like their childrens poo. To the point where they stop realising it's not something everyone is happy with having around them.

I had a few Shock experiences like this with my NCT group. Once i invited them round for a nice birthday lunch i was having and 3 of them changed their babies shitty nappies on the dining table, while others were eating. I kept saying 'there is a changing table upstairs you know' and they would reply 'oh no, we're fine here' or 'i can't be arsed to walk up the stairs' while i squirmed.

Another time one of them did it in a cafe and then was describing in loud detail some of the poos her baby had done recently. I could see the other diners gagging and staring at us. I tried to ask her to keep her voice down, 'come on people are eating' type thing and she looked blanky and said 'don't be silly it's just poo' and then gleefully carried on. I honestly doubt she would have been like that before she had PFB.

AT toddler group the other day someones 3yo had done a right stinker and the mum just sat there. We were all saying 'oh i think someone has done a poo' and checking our dc. She just casually said 'oh yes it's x', i'll change him later and carried on drinking her tea and eating biscuits. The smell was totally rancid. People were moving away and gagging while she carried on oblivious. Her mum was with her and kept saying 'you really need to change him, it really smells' and she would say 'yes, after i just have another tea...'

I'm potty training twins at the mo
Days out have required some inventive and very public potty positions (1 twin likes privacy, the other wont sit on it unless distracted by something entertaining. Like roadworks.)
But only ever outside! And wherever possible a long way awayfrom people! (Man with crane, I'm sorry, he was fascinated by it)

YANBU. That's utterly revolting.

If you need to carry a potty & whip it out in a public place then that is not actually toilet training.

An emergency potty in car perhaps on a long journey, but to go to the shops, no, just no.

Shock

What tf did they do with the contest?!

Somewhere discreet, maybe in the out of order toilet, but not in a café.

I'm still horrified at the memory of ds1 bringing his potty into the middle of the living room floor and sitting on it and producing the world's hugest turd whilst the local vicar was here introducing himself (we'd just moved in, ds was 23 months), and that was in our own home (nearly 9 years ago!).

Just bring child to a toilet, don't get this portable public potty nonsense.

Gross. Yanbu

I actually think it's a bit degrading for the child too. Potty training is hard. Of course you encourage the idea that it's nothing to be embaressed about, but I think they need a little privacy!

I just don't get it.

I've never taken a potty out of the house?! And successfully trained both of mine.

But ffs in a cafe is just mind boggling.

I don't know where I saw it, but there was a video of a woman in America I believe, sitting a child on a potty while eating in a fast food place.

It had a plastic bag and she took
It with her. Bit of decency in her to not leave the bin stinking of poo!

Our point exactly! It's not really toilet training if you let them poo anywhere!

The twin comment was strange maybe she left a twin at home?

I have a friend whose mother (50's) literally poos anywhere. There often been Facebook status' from her kids laughing about how "mum shat on the hard shoulder going down the van" Confused

What happens when this kid gets to school/nursery?

Christ on a bike, I would have bloody said something too!

I managed to toilet train 2 children without ever taking a potty outside of the house.

This is not the first time I have heard of people putting their toddlers on potties in cafés, there was a poster who was pissed off that she was told off for allowing her toddler for using the potty in the curtain department in John Lewis. What the hell is wrong with these people?

YABU

there is nothing shameful about defecation and hiding it away in a "WC" will damage a child in later life perhaps leading to constipation and/or anal retentiveness. Grin

If their DC still need a potty whipped out immediately and put under them or they'll poo their pants, it would suggest the DC are not ready for potty training. Or they have only just started in which case the advice is to stay home or close to home for a week or so until the child is confident. Potty training doesn't have to be hard but they're doing it when their DC aren't ready so they're making life difficult for themselves - and everyone else.

Regardless, they should vacate an eating area of they want to stick their DC on the potty! I'm in the midst of potty training right now and I wouldn't either need to do this or consider doing it. I would get my DS to the bathroom and let him use his travel potty there or if no bathroom and desperate, use my car.

Ugh, YANBU, it's not OK to do it where people are eating.

I meant use the potty in my car obviously, not just poop there like it's a latrine Grin Grin

In fact, yes, when did this taking a potty out with you thing even happen?

I just encouraged potty use at home & accepted that there was going to be a brief borderline stage when they were supposedly out of nappies but occasionally crapped/wet themselves when out & about.

I'm not saying this was ever going to be amongst my favourite memories of my dc's toddlerhood, but you just keep a spare pair of pants & leggings in your bag, surely?

Surely there's some sort of H&S rule about not shitting where you eat? :-/

It's common sense to most that you don't as it's just eww before you even look at how unhygienic it is.

What were they planning on doing with the poo in the potty? Toilets out if order so can't flush it, take it with them? No, if they're entitled enough to do that then they'd probably try to hand the potty to staff to get rid of... Dirty people
