Work bonus

Left a job I hated a couple of years ago. The pay however was really good. Went in to work somewhere else for less money but was promised that a summer an Christmas bonus would make up for it. All went well until this years summer bonus, hasn't arrived in our pay.
I feel cheeky to ask but AIBU to expect it? It's a bonus after all.

Even if the company had not performed as well as predicted and there was no bonus to be had, they should tell you surely?

grumpychops1 · 14/08/2014 19:21

Well yes, you'd have though so. I feel cheeky if I ask but I'm really banking on it.

YAB a bit U to expect a bonus - generally they're dependant on company performance / certain targets being met, so shouldn't be relied upon.

I would, however, expect a company to inform employees about what's happening with the bonus, even if there is no bonus for whatever reason this time round.

DamonAllbran · 14/08/2014 19:31

Have they told you you're getting one or are you just assuming?

We get a letter telling us we're getting one in the next pay packet. If we're getting one...

WooWooOwl · 14/08/2014 19:38

Did you get a bonus last summer?

DiaDuit · 14/08/2014 19:44

whenever I got bonuses (back in the day Grin) we all knew when they were coming and how much to expect. we would get an email of the company performance that quarter/year and were told what percentage our bonus would be. even if you hadn't checked your email the whole office would be either buzzing or groaning about it so you couldn't avoid hearing what was coming or not coming.

grumpychops1 · 14/08/2014 19:52

It was part of the package when I started "can't pay you the same hourly rate as you got at X company but you will receive a summer and Christmas bonus"
Received one last summer an at Xmas.
Checked contract and nothing in it about bonus unfortunately.
I guess I am being unreasonable, I just feel "had" if you will.

I got the same 'promises' Op. Was fine for 2 yrs and then NOTHING for 18 months.

still waiting....Grr.

justmyview · 14/08/2014 21:08

Sounds to me like they would usually expect to pay a bonus but business isn't so good. I don't see how you can challenge that, assuming other people are being treated the same

ilovesooty · 14/08/2014 21:31

If there is nothing in writing there's no way it's going to happen. Didn't you realise when you signed the contract?

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 14/08/2014 21:33

You need to know the parameters on which the bonus will be paid. They can't just arbitrarily decide to pay it or not.
