I may be mad enough to have lost perspective so please help.

DS (14) wanted a nokia lumia 650 for xmas so I shelled out £200 for one which he managed to smash 5 months later. As it still functioned despite badly shattered screen, he continued to use it (despite me telling him to use his old phone until I could afford to replace the screen) and it ended up getting rained on and breaking entirely.
After a month with his old phone and a very good school report, I decided to give him my old iphone 4 (which I had had for 2 years and had kept immaculate.) He was over the moon and loved it more than his lumia.
You can guess what just happened. He's only had it 3 weeks and I'd bought him a shock proof case and screen protecter for it so I don't know how he managed to do it :-( :-(

I haven't yelled, screamed or grounded him forever -yet.
I'm thinking of just taking away the iphone regardless of whether it still works (smallish crack in screen) and not giving it back ever.
Thoughts?

Iphone screens are made from glass, that's why they break so easy.

I've dropped mine loads of times and never cracked it.

Kiss of death that post will be.

Think the iPhones are worse if dropped and land on a corner iyswim
DD has dropped hers flat and it didnt break.DH dropped his and landed on its corner and bounced & smashed to pieces Shock

The glass is very thin. My Sony Xperia z has been used as a teether for dd, thrown across the room and has not even so much as chipped. My friend knocked her bag off the table onto a carpeted floor and her screen smashed on her iPhone. It's an apple conspiracy I think!

i agree it's the corner that's the worst - mine has fallen face down loads of times and not a scratch. just once it caught on the corner (and i have a phone case similar to the one linked above, which covers the corners) at the wrong angle and the screen shattered. fortunately everything else worked and i was able to get the screen replaced easily

he left it on a ledge at the side of the football pitch and it got knocked off - I keep telling my kids - you wouldn't do this with your laptop/computer/monitor (when they put their phone somewhere silly)

I think he has to understand that after all it is a piece of electronics not a plastic toy. Many are very careless, not only your son Smile
