Dead Poets Society is one of my favorite films of all time.

Am genuinely devastated.

Oh Captain, my Captain, our fearful trip is done.

??

Itsfab · 12/08/2014 13:13

There have been comments on here and on the tv that show that people STILL do not understand depression and think it is something you can have control over Sad.

Onedropoflove · 12/08/2014 13:15

I'm blubbing watching sky

Borderterrierpuppy · 12/08/2014 13:34

So sad to think about someone who made us all so happy feeling so sad himself.
RIP to a man who gave us all so much pleasure and happiness, I wonder if he knew just how loved he was?

fifi669 · 12/08/2014 13:39

News that genuinely made me catch my breath. Gutted. The man, the legend. Nanu, nanu.

kali110 · 12/08/2014 14:28

It's awful. Was just watching family guy with episode based on him ??
It's so sad. Depression is hard to live with.

tickletink · 12/08/2014 15:02

I think it's so very sad that a man who brought such (and repeated!) happiness to so many people was so in pain.

I almost teared up!

Badvoc123 · 12/08/2014 16:11

Such awful news.
His poor family.
I am really upset about this, which seems silly about someone I didn't even know.
But of course his genius was making us feel we did know him, in all his many guises.
RIP Robin.

Animation · 12/08/2014 16:20

I see he has 3 children. What an awful trauma for them.

Very sad, RIP Robin.

SpringyReframed · 12/08/2014 17:03

Glad it is not just me that isn't normally upset at celebrity deaths but feels so shocked and sad about this. He obviously was held in great affection.

My favourite film of his is The Fisher King. No one seems to be mentioning it very much. I do hope it gets shown soon.

CiderwithBuda · 12/08/2014 17:47

Just downloaded Dead Poets Society to watch tonight.

I see Jumanji is on TV tonight.

Springy - I THINK I noticed that ?The Fisher King is on on Sky movies if you have that.

squoosh · 12/08/2014 17:49

I think Bird Cage is one of my favourites. Love that film!

So sad to have heard of his passing and I hope his family will get good support .

My husband suffered from severe depression last year and threatened suicide in front of our children.

Depression is such a horrible illness.

halfdrunkcoffee · 12/08/2014 19:47

So sad. I loved him in Mrs Doubtfire and One Hour Photo to mention a few. He was a very versatile and talented actor.

ChestyNut · 12/08/2014 20:10

I too am unbelievably sadden by the news.
An amazingly talented man Sad

sheldonesque · 12/08/2014 20:34

I felt deeply sad when I heard the news. Depression is cruel and for some ever present.

He left a beautiful legacy of joy to so many and I hope that he can now begin to feel joy inside his own heart. He will be so fondly remembered.

I wish him and his family peace.

FrankelandFilly · 12/08/2014 20:59

Really good article on comedians and depression here. It says Robin Williams was more likely to be Bipolar than "just" suffering from depression.

HippityHoppityLaLaLa · 12/08/2014 21:37

Why do people use the word 'sad' when they mean 'depressed'? Being 'sad' and being 'depressed' are not the same thing. Robin Williams suffered from depression. You may be 'sad' that he is dead. Depression is a vicious, nasty, life-cheating illness, a million miles away form being 'sad'. Robin W suffered from an illness that made him take his own life.

You can tell the reporting & comments has touched a nerve ...

I am more affected than I thought I would be by the news. I'm nearly his age, so he wasn't part of my childhood. IF his death helps bring depression out of the dark then something good will have come of it (though not for his family, obviously).

HippityHoppityLaLaLa · 12/08/2014 21:40

NK346... I can tell you understand the difference between 'sad' and 'depressed'. A frightening experience for all, I imagine. Hope your DH has received appropriate help and that you are coping.

TheFirmament · 12/08/2014 21:46

He was so brilliant in One Hour Photo, playing against type, it's probably my favourite RW film. He could do so much stuff... that role wasn't about manic energy or zaniness at all, the protagonist was an incredibly still, pained, damaged character and he was just mesmerising to watch.

I feel so bad for him, I have had a weep. The poor, poor man. I felt the same about L'Wren Scott. To think of someone feeling so terrible. RIP.

HesterShaw · 12/08/2014 21:50

Depression is hideous My grandfather committed suicide because of it when my dad and his siblings were just teenagers, and the effect of it ricocheted through his immediate family and down the generations to this day. In fact my dad was the one to find him. He is also lifelong depressive and now has Alzheimer's and I am convinced the depression hastened its progress. My brother is also a depressive, a schizophrenic and has tried to kill himself.

I am so very thankful it has not yet touched me and my sister. I fucking hate mental illness so much.

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 12/08/2014 23:32

He paid Christopher Reeves's medical bills? Gosh.

Poor, poor man. RIP

Darkesteyes · 13/08/2014 01:17

One Hour Photo was amazing.

What has just sickened me though is the outpouring of love for RW on my facebook feed from people who were calling people with depression who claim ESA benefit scroungers just a few months back Confused
