DH eating crisps

WitchWay · 10/08/2014 23:45

He didn't have any of the delicious gratin dauphinoise potato with dinner (steak, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach) & is now munching through 4 packets of crisps. This is a regular occurrence - he has "enough" to eat & then shortly afterwards stuffs his face with crisps. My fault for buying them I suppose - well there won't be any more bought once they're all gone. Angry Confused Hmm Sad

If he ate the steak, mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach then he probably just didn't like the potatoes but didn't want to say.

I can't see anyone actually 'saving room' for crisps later. He probably just had enough to eat at that given time.

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/08/2014 10:45

If you are buying multo pack crisps, there isn't a lot in them tbh.

I get exactly where you are coming from but I tend to get it the other way round :)

Yesterday we were going out for an early dinner (youngest's turn to choose where we were going and they do a cheap menu if we go before 6) and we had lunch about 1. he had toast and scrambled egg which to be fair is pretty filling so he wanted to go as late as we could. Boys are both teenagers so are bottomless pits. One had toast and scrambled egg, the other had a tin of tomato soup and a cheese sandwich. both had an apple and some grapes and fuit juice, they were allowed a packet of crisps if they wanted. I just had a small turkey sandwich (saving myself for dinner).

Anyway - we had an afternoon movie as the weather was atrocious. boys had a bag of crisps each. OH despite saying he was full and wanted a later dinner fillled a bowl from a large bag of crisps - probably the equivalent of 3 standard bags.

Anyway - queue half past 4 and kids and I are getting hungry. We ended up going out by 5 and he had to choose a light option for Dinner and no pudding - I say it serves him right but at the end of the day he is a grown man who can choose what he eats. We go by the majority as regards to the meal time and if he chose to ruin his appitute then that's up to him.

I agree that making something nice and then him choosing to eat loads of crisps is annoying and feels a bit disrepectful, but at the end of the day, it's more leftovers for you :)

mrsbrownsgirls · 11/08/2014 11:01

your husband is v rude to reject home cooked stuff in favour of crisps .
Have you discused it with him?

BadgersBum · 11/08/2014 11:08

My DH would eat both! He finished all the 'leftovers' of the Sunday lunch I cooked yesterday (so we never have leftovers), said he was stuffed, then wandered in with a chocolate biscuit bar thing about half an hour later.

ouryve · 11/08/2014 11:13

Pass, most multipack crisps are 25-35g per packet - the same as when I was a child. It's plenty.

BoomBoomsCousin · 11/08/2014 11:16

Gail has good advice "I cook what I fancy for dinner, and he can like it or lump it."

If he doesn't appreciate the effort you put in for him, stop putting that effort in. He does't want it and you are resenting it.

If he likes crisps, he likes crisps. It's not a terrible character flaw.

ICanSeeTheSun · 11/08/2014 11:18

I'm an adult, I can decide what snack food I want to eat and same goes with DH.

There are things in the house nobody eats for snacking, like chopped tin tomato because I need them as part of a meal.

MorphineDreams · 11/08/2014 11:30

I suppose it's like what I do, if I know my main meal is going to fill me up I'll leave some so I can have a dessert afterwards.

passmethewineplease · 11/08/2014 11:36

our I disagree, the bag is literally just air and a few big crisps.

I'm not greedy, honest

If he does this on a regular basis OP then why do you continue to cook for him, I'd stop personally.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 11/08/2014 11:42

He's an adult an able to make his own choices.

But if it is a regular occurrence he's also an adult teaching his kids that it's OK to leave home cooked food at the table and snack on loads of crap.

I amShock at those people saying bags of crisps are small - they haven't changed size at all since one bag was acceptable to eat. eating 6 bags is just excessive.

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/08/2014 11:57

Multi pack bags of crisps are around 25g. Actual individual bags of crisps are 35-40g

Multi bags are fine - especially for children or those careful with their dite, but I can fully understand why a grown man would want more than one.

Multi bags didn't exist when I was a child. You bought a proper bag.

It's not really policing, it's about respect for another person preparing an entire meal, not to mention the extra £, if this happens every night, and the pretty poor role modelling for DCs.

Can he cook for a change? Bet he'd be miffed if you don't eat every scrap and beg for more Smile

seasalt · 11/08/2014 12:13

For dinner tonight just give him a plate of crisps Grin

WitchWay · 11/08/2014 12:33

The OP of course I should imagine is a teetotal non-smoker and the potato gratin a rare treat in her usual top athlete/swimwear model's diet.

Ha ha chelsy The OP is an ex-smoking, boozing wine most nights, eats everything, cooks everything, keeps slim by exercising sort of gal Grin

Most people have missed the point. Most but not all. I don't care that he likes crisps. If I don't buy crisps he trawls around looking for other savoury snacks like cheese & biscuits - fine by me.

What drives me nuts is that I cook stuff he likes (stuff we all like) & he leaves part of it, even though he could easily eat it, & then eats something else later, because he hasn't had enough to eat Hmm It is worse if it's a big bowl of something "samey" like a stir-fry - I think he gets bored with eating it & grinds to a halt.

He occasionally mutters about not having puddings very often - if I make them he mostly doesn't eat them more for me & DS & in any case there is usually fruit or yoghurt available.

I don;t give a bugger how many calories he eats - he keeps reasonably slim but still might drop dead from crisp overdose

I am totally with you WitchWay. I get what you are saying. If I have gone to the trouble of putting together a really nice meal, I would be seething if someone didn't do it justice but then stuffed their gob with crisps afterwards.

WitchWay · 11/08/2014 12:39

Thanks Roussette Smile

And who would eat crisps when there is potato dauphoise to eat... I love potato dauphoise and could eat everyone else's. Grin

Lozzle12 · 11/08/2014 12:49

No advice but YANBU imo.

myotherusernameisbetter · 11/08/2014 12:54

Why wouldn't you be hungry for dinner at 6 after lunch at 1?

Maybe it's just me but that seems fine. :o

We do breakfast about 7am, lunch varies, if I'm at work it's usually about 12 and OH could be anytime between that and half 2. school lunch is about 1.10. At the weekend usually about 12.30-1.00.

Dinner is usally about 5/5.30 and everyone is starving and complaining by then.

Pudding/Supper is about 9-10pm before bed. That will consist of whatever is about (could be yoghurt and a biscuit, could be toast, could be a donut or muffin) that is mainly for the kids. OH and I will usually just get a snack (aka crisps or a biscuit) if we are hungry - though OH will generally have a bowl of cereal later as well.

I love potato dauphinoise too but OH finds it a bit too creamy, if I'm cooking, I would make it, he would ask for a smaller portion and if he wanted to suplement that with crisps then that's up to him.
