To think less of ....

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/08/2014 07:37

...a restaurant that does not provide a dessert fork with the dessert spoon for pudding / dessert / sweet? It doesn't matter what the pudding is; a fork ought to be there.

It depends what the dessert is.
Cake/pie/gateau yanbu.
Ice cream....not so much.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 10/08/2014 07:45

It would ruin my week.

Hassled · 10/08/2014 07:45

I think it absolutely matters what the dessert is. If they went out of their way to give me a fork for a sorbet I'd think they were nuts.

ilovesooty · 10/08/2014 07:47

I'm sure you can refer to it when you do your Trip Advisor review.

Seriously it rather depends on what the dessert is.

Sirzy · 10/08/2014 08:19

Just say "could I have a fork aswell please"

startwig1982 · 10/08/2014 08:22

I judge restaurants on their toilets rather than their lack of dessert forks. Smile

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/08/2014 13:02

I do ask for a fork, if it's not provided, whatever the pudding is. Even if it's tapioca, I need something in my left hand to stabilise what I'm picking up with the spoon. I should not have to hold the plate / bowl /whatever with my other hand (allowing for left handers here). I was taught that one should not hold the bowl even for soup except when one is tipping it up away from one.

MorphineDreams · 10/08/2014 13:04

Jesus christ is it really that difficult. I use a spoon with ease and don't have to hold the bowl

ohfourfoxache · 10/08/2014 13:09

Depends on the dessert and depends on the restaurant - bog standard beefeater then I wouldn't expect a fork; the fat duck, I would think less of them if it wasn't provided.

simplepedant · 10/08/2014 13:13

You order tapioca when you go to a restaurant? Where is this?

WorraLiberty · 10/08/2014 13:15

I literally had no idea people could be so uptight until I joined Mumsnet Grin

Sirzy · 10/08/2014 13:18

Lol worra.

I am trying to imagine the staffs faces when they get the "excuse me, can I have a fork for my ice cream please?" Request!

mommy2ash · 10/08/2014 13:19

I don't think I have ever seen a dessert fork in my life so no it wouldn't bother me

Turquoisetamborine · 10/08/2014 13:20

Which restaurant serves tapioca??

Perhaps one could use the tongue in one's head and ask for a fork if it's required.

ICanSeeTheShardFromHere · 10/08/2014 13:20

"Even if it's tapioca, I need something in my left hand to stabilise what I'm picking up with the spoon."

Lol.

Have you not been feeding yourself long OP?

My seven month daughter can put a spoon in her mouth without needing a stabiliser.

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 10/08/2014 13:23

You must be able to shit diamonds.

Unclench.

Its really not a big deal.

ShatnersBassoon · 10/08/2014 13:24

I only eat at places that provide sporks. This

MostWicked · 10/08/2014 13:25

It all sounds incredibly pretentious to me!

Who invented this rule that you can't touch your bowl?

Do you use a fork for your breakfast cereal?

StillFrigginRexManningDay · 10/08/2014 13:31

Would you not get a few weird looks eating with both a spoon and a fork in your hands? Do you ever get mixed up and start forking your tapioca? Would two spoons be counter productive?

RedToothBrush · 10/08/2014 13:32

Wouldn't think less of the restaurant.

Would think less of the person on the next table who made a fuss about it.

DragonMamma · 10/08/2014 13:32

If I saw somebody using a fork and spoon to eat trifle I would think they were being completely wanky.

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/08/2014 13:35

RedToothBrush One can ask for a fork without making a loud fuss.

WhatTheHellDoWeCallThisBaby · 10/08/2014 13:35

Do you use a fork for your breakfast cereal?

Excellent question from up above - do you require a piece of "stabiliser" cutlery when eating cereal?

Branleuse · 10/08/2014 13:35

what about if its yoghurt?

HappyAgainOneDay · 10/08/2014 13:36

Using the word tapioca did not mean that I was referring to restaurant menus. If I were to go to dinner somewhere, I would expect a dessert fork. Why were they made if they were not to be available and used. Perhaps I should not be surprised at the number of JK people who think they are not 'necessary'.
