To think I shouldn't need superhuman strength to open Ikea's pots of jam?

I can open most things without a struggle but this pot of blueberry jam is beyond me. I've tried all the tricks I can think of, turned it upside down to break the vacuum, put it in hot water, used elastic bands, stabbed the lid repeatedly but it's not budging. It's welded on by the look of it. DH normally succeeds where I fail but he's had no joy either. He really persisted and despite going as purple as the jam from the effort he's given up.
He reckons I should go back and ask the customer service to open it! It's too far to bother though.

Have you tried tapping it repeatly on the floor until you hear a pop then opening it? Not sure if it will work if it's welded on, but worth a try haha! Good luck!

aubreye · 09/08/2014 11:34

repeatedly* (what happened there?)

microcosmia · 09/08/2014 11:44

aubreye, yes DH tried valiantly thumping it off various surfaces to get the seal to pop. No joy. It won't work on the electric can opener either , so we may try the normal tin opener if I could only find it.

No idea. I'd take it back. What us like to do is go into local pub full of big tough men and ask them to prove their man hood and open thus small jar. I'm sure with lots of men trying to open it it will budge. You sure it's not the display one and it was glued on. Grin

Ah, you need to buy an Ikea jar opener!

SirChenjin · 09/08/2014 11:54

You need a Jarkey - £3.99 and they open all types of jars, not just Ikeas Grin

cricketpitch · 09/08/2014 11:54

I use the butter knife method - but I agree that I bet there is an IKEA jar opener sold!
Good luck

I was about to suggest this. They really work a treat.

microcosmia · 09/08/2014 12:09

I've never heard of a Jarkey before I will definitely look into that! It never occurred to me that there could be a special IKEA jar opener either!
I could hold a competition to see who could open it londonrach! Actually DH has got fired up again and doesn't want to let it get the better of him. He's on your wiki link page right now. It's a slow day here...

Wear a rubber glove to open it. If that doesn't work then it's clearly broken.

SirChenjin · 09/08/2014 13:04

No, it's not broken - they are put on with a vacuum sort of thing, and sometimes the rubber gloves method just isn't strong enough. The Jarkey gets even the most tightly sealed ones off with a little 'pop' - most satisfying

EarSlaps · 09/08/2014 13:07

I use a beer bottle opener to release the vacuum, a cheaper version of the jarkey.

londonrach · 09/08/2014 13:14

Lol loving the competition idea. Any luck op.... He dh. Has he proved his man strength

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 09/08/2014 13:19

Just use a spoon as a lever in the same way you would use a jar key.

CaptChaos · 09/08/2014 13:22

Yup, a butter knife under the edge of the lid and lever to pop the seal. Opens every jar ever.

purplemurple1 · 09/08/2014 13:45

Run a dinner knife between the lid and the jar to break the seal.

Andallmyhopeisgone · 09/08/2014 14:59

I hate this! Especially when I buy a drink when out and then can't open it!
Wrap a rubber band around the edge of the lid and then try, it works most of the time. I try to carry one in my bag all the time now.

Andallmyhopeisgone · 09/08/2014 15:01

Oops, I see you tried that already.

Greenwayslide · 09/08/2014 17:26

Sometimes it's not about strength just technique

Well I went out earlier and DH left the jar aside having failed with several techniques. Then when he was doing something else he heard a spontaneous pop from the jar. He tried the lid and it opened!
Now if only we knew which technique actually succeeded!

If only I'd had the elderly Korean lady in the thread above I'd have been sorted I reckon. She would just have had to give it one of their stares and it would have popped.I'm sure of it.
