I haven't watched this in years.

Good lord. Has there ever been a better - or fitter - bit of casting than this?

Much as I love Richard Armitage in North and South...

Darcy's hair alone has me going weak at the knees though the wine may have something to do with that too

Now watching the BBC version of Emma. Got through one episode and remembered why I didn't watch it in the first place. Think I will stick to the Kate Beckinsale version.

So, what should I re-watch or watch now? Netflix or Amazon instant here Grin

AR is wonderful in S&S, but still doesn't beat CF as Darcy.

Not least because Darcy is vastly more fanciable than Brandon (at least the Brandon of the book; the Brandon of the movie is infinitely superior to the book, which is pretty much 100% down to AR).

Thurlow · 09/08/2014 21:06

Loved the recent Sense & Sensibility. Obviously it had the divine David Morrissey, but I thought the girl playing Eleanor was amazing.

Brandon gives me the creeps, Marianne should have hotfooted it to London and become an artist's muse of ill repute.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2014 21:07

Book Brandon loves her virtually at first sight, backs off when she shows she's not in the slightest bit interested, then is there to bring her mother to her when she's practically dying and then reads to her - lovely throughout, even without the devastating Rickman effect.

EmilyByrdStarr · 09/08/2014 21:18

I love Brandom! Always thought the Alan Rockman version would be a lovely uncle. Actually, he could be a BIL and between him and Bingley I would be sorted!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2014 21:19

Bingley too wet.

RegTheMonkey1 · 09/08/2014 21:21

Someone way back in this thread mentioned Sean Bean in Lady Chatterley. I will never forget the scene when he shags her up against a tree. Made quite an impression on me! Another Colin Firth for Darcy fan here, and as for Keira (Goldfish) Knightley as Lizzie - anathema!!!!

squoosh · 09/08/2014 21:31

Long, dull winter evenings spent sitting in draughty reception rooms would benefit from the presence of a lighthearted Bingley or two.

JapaneseMargaret · 09/08/2014 21:36

Brandon is a very honourable, kind, trustworthy, Good Sort of Man, but it's only Rickman who gives him any sort of charisma.

IMO, of course. I could appreciate him as I read the book, but I didn't really get him until AR stepped into his shoes.

Having said that, the producers fully admit that they actively made both Brandon and Edward more accessible to modern audiences.

EF in the book is a complete wash-out. Again, IMO. Grin

Thurlow · 09/08/2014 21:37

Emily, it's not quite a swoonworthy but have you seen The Devil's Whore?

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 21:38

Yes Bingley would be a fab brother in law, but imagine having the superior sisters as sisters in lawShock.

Wouldn't mind if Darcy had grumpy moments, I would just waft gracefully around Pemberley, more than spacious enough for wafting Grin.

Now, what kind of impression did the shag against the tree make on you Reg?Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/08/2014 21:41

Hugh G as Edward is likable enough but not exactly shag-worthy. He is much sexier as Daniel Cleaver.

CoffeeOne · 09/08/2014 21:43

I must have watched the BBC P&P a hundred times. it's just perfect.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 21:44

Oh and thanks to all of you I have a DVD of North and South winging it's way to me for a spot of Richard Armitage lusting (my original copy has given up the ghost!!).

Loved RA as Guy of Guisbourne, my dsis was always saying "no, you can't he's the baddie", poor thing just doesn't understandSmile.

EmilyByrdStarr · 09/08/2014 21:49

I think I caught some of that Thurlow but will go back to it and have a look Thanks. I remember as a teenager loving CF as Darcy so much that I watched Nostromo that he was in, didn't get past the first half of the show or much past the first chapter of the book!

I know what you mean about the superior sisters Emotions but then if I married Darcy they wouldn't be my sisters in law and I could ban them from Pemberley! Mind you, I like to think that Louisa just needs to grow a backbone and get away from the orange peril. At least Georgiana is lovely, I always thought she and Bingley would be sweet together Smile. Better that than the creepy Colonel in the Death at Pemberley thing.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 21:50

Emily, Emma is my least favourite of Jane Austen's books, I just can't warm to the character, she's so irritating with her meddling that I just want to slap her.

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 21:55

Emily yes that Colonel in Death Comes to Pemberly was seriously creepy, he made Wickham appealing!

EmilyByrdStarr · 09/08/2014 22:06

Emotions I do like Emma, although I can't warm to the character on the modern YouTube version, she seems spoilt and obnoxious. I like the book but don't think I would want her as a friend in real life, can you imagine the AIBU about her?! I also find the whole Knightley 'I held you in my arms when you were 3 weeks old and now I love you' a bit creepy. Not nearly as bad as the pervy Death colonel though. And yes, he did make Wickham appealing in that by comparison! Darcy there though, not great. I will hold on for CF Wink.

unlucky83 · 09/08/2014 22:16

Because of this thread I watched the whole series of P&P (again) on You tube last night...one after the other - 6 hours - kept thinking I'll just watch the next one ...it was light by the time I went to sleep Blush.

CF as Darcy is just so perfect! JE was much better than I remembered - and I love Mr Bennett (both in the series and in the book)

Having a bit of a crap time recently and it really cheered me up. Purely self indulgent and a little irresponsible (don't know how I've made it through this busy day with so little sleep). But it made me smile. Smiling now.

Now working out which Jane Eyre I'm going to watch ....

Emily your post has made me giggle, thank youGrin.

You've really got a thing about the Colonel in Death Comes to Pemberly haven't you?

I think it has been establshed, beyond doubt, that CF is Darcy.

Is your You Tube version the one with Mark Strong in it?

EmilyByrdStarr · 09/08/2014 22:20

Yey unlucky83, glad you enjoyed it Smile. Surely CF makes up for sleep? Wink. I find Mr Bennet interesting, he is far too old in the awful KK version, surely he and Mrs B are in their 40s? I like his sense of humour in the 1995 version.

cerealqueen · 09/08/2014 22:24

Love P&P with Firth, Persuasion with Ciran Hinds, Toby Stephens in anything (Tenant of Wildfell Hall anyone?)

BUT, what about Dan Stevens in S&S chopping the wood? Up there with the lake scene I think!

emotionsecho · 09/08/2014 22:24

ding I wonder if the bods at Amazon are seeing a rush in orders for North and South and thinking, "oh Mumsnet is discussing Richard Armitage again".Grin

unlucky it just has to be the Toby Stephens one, all the rest are but a pale imitation.
