Come forward, all you Pratchett People!

Re audiobooks

I like the way that TR says, " ...and Now....." Because it always sounds portentous.

But I hate the inconsistencies between different stories. In Going Postal and the Mint one, Adorabelle is very cool, calm, collected & has a voice to match. In Raising Steam, she has turned into a cockernee.

oddcommentator · 07/08/2014 22:35

i do know someone who quite deliberately called their ginger tom Greebo.

He utterly lives upto his name.

By all accounts he is an evil, scoundrel.

KarinMurphy · 07/08/2014 22:43

I used to be VisitTheInfidelWithExplanatoryPamphlets a while back.

Saw Pterry out with his carer the other day. He looked so terrible frail and seemed to be struggling badly. It was utterly heartbreaking.

Bastarding disease. :(

PerditaXDream · 07/08/2014 22:56

Bit late but hello! I don't post much but also a TP fan. Very impressed with some of the names here. Don't quote much in real life except from "Where's my cow?"

Chiana · 08/08/2014 04:41

I love the insane repetition of "Where's my cow?" in "Thud." Love it, even though it happens at a very dramatic point in the book. DH and I say that phrase to each other sometimes, just at random, and then fall about laughing at each other's nerdiness. Oh, and the DC have a copy of the picture book, obviously, although it's getting pretty tattered.

Alas, I couldn't think of a good Pratchett-related username, so I went with a Farscape reference instead. If I ever do a name change, it'll be a Discworld-related name.

KarinMurphy, that's so sad!

heraldgerald · 08/08/2014 18:11

Never read one ... But having read this thread feeling inspired. Best one to start with?

Nanny0gg · 08/08/2014 19:05

See, ideally read in order for sense, but his writing got so much better the more he wrote.

My favourite characters are the City Watch (even though I chose a Witch name!), so I'd have to say Guards! Guards! to read those in order.

But as you'll want to read them all, start at the beginning - The Colour of Magic.

RunDougalRunQuiteFast · 08/08/2014 19:24

Is it sad to envy people who haven't read all the books yet, as they have this incredible world waiting for them? I want to be new at it again!

CMOTDibbler · 08/08/2014 19:33

I'd want to read them all in order, but in the knowledge that in the first three he's making the transition from parodying the fantasy genre to an extent, and then embracing it.

But I hate reading things out of order

SnapeAndLily · 08/08/2014 19:36

Rereading Raising Steam in the hope it'll grow on me... hmm, might happen.

My favourite when I first started reading Discworld was Lords and Ladies, then for ages and ages it was Nightwatch. Nightwatch probably still is my Number One love, but I adore the Moist books.

In order of preference:
City Guard
Moist von Lipwig
Tiffany Aching
Witches
Wizards (loathe Rincewind)

MyCatIsAStupidBastard · 08/08/2014 19:40

I was MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanGreebo for a while. Might go back to it, if I can remember my password.

MrsCosmopilite · 08/08/2014 20:09

I agree that the first three are him finding his way as a fantasy author, but without reading them you can miss some gems of turns of phrase.

Every time a new one comes out I reread the LOT from the start. Always something new to find.

RaisingSteam · 08/08/2014 22:35

I remember reading on MN that not everyone liked Raising Steam but I kind of work in railways anyway so I just loved his take on my world. I've not read as many as I'd have liked to, someone gave me Good Omens back in my 20s and I found that hard work, didn't realise it wasn't exactly a Discworld novel IIUC, but it put me off. Now I'm catching up.

TheSoulCakeDuck · 08/08/2014 22:45

Hello, just thought I'd check in

TheSoulCakeDuck · 08/08/2014 22:47

Has anyone sung the song about the hedgehog yet?

Dontgotosleep · 08/08/2014 22:49

Feeling a bit thick , now but what the hell is a Terry Pratchet related user name, more to the point who is Terry Pratchet,

Chiana · 08/08/2014 23:12

Dontgotosleep, he's a fantasy author, quite prolific, been writing his Discworld books for several decades. If you're not into fantasy, I suppose you might not have heard of him.

Dontgotosleep · 08/08/2014 23:14

Thanks Chiana.

PtraciDjelibeybi · 08/08/2014 23:24

I have been wanting to ask this same question myself - keep spotting Pterry themed usernames and wondering just how many there were on here!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 08/08/2014 23:32

Try this for a guide to the reading order.

Prepare for your life to change. Grin

MagratsHair · 15/08/2014 18:10

Hello! I've been away for a week & reading Unseen Academicals :)

I started with Hogfather! I like the first 3 but tend to not like Rincewind too much so I'd recommend for first reading:

Hogfather
Witches Abroad (intro to witches)
Guards Guards (intro to the Watch/police)
Moving Pictures (for wizards as has Ridcully as Archchancellor)
Soul music
Mort

MagratsHair · 15/08/2014 18:16

Dontgotosleep Terry Pratchett is an author whose genre is fantasy, but its not serious & anal fantasy like some of them. He's very funny & has an amazing way with words & likes to parody themes & events to great comedic effect (he does a play on King Kong in 'Moving Pictures' where he has a giant woman at the end, on the rampage with an ape in her hand.) He's very accessible & uses language in the most brilliant way:

'Mr Stollop commanded that all family earnings were pooled, with him holding the pool, which was then pooled with his friends in the bar of the Turkey & Vegetables, and ultimately pooled again in the reeking alley behind it.'

Try it! :)
