To think that after all the money spent on their military training that Harry and William should have proper jobs?

Just that really - all they ever seem to do is go to sporting events

So... training for new job to begin shortly... it will be his principle job, few royal appearances... new house being done up at own expense... salary to be donated...first heir to take up private job...

I think that should meet OPs criteria, shouldn't it?

forago · 07/08/2014 13:27

yes was just about to post - fair play William! I am not much of a royalist (at all really) but I think its great he's voluntarily doing a "proper job" - my respect for him has gone up.

Nomama · 07/08/2014 13:37

I'm not much of a royalist either, but have surprised myself in the things I have looked at... like the 10 week Cambridge course he took, that someone mentioned. I did a search and came up with the facts that it was partially integrated with some PHD lectures, was intended to give him some background knowledge for when he takes over the Cornwall Duchy and was entirely paid for.

It does seem that the royal drain on the public purse is being actively managed and decreased. All to the good, I thought!

And I am disappointed that OP hasn't come back with a response regarding why the queen doesn't have to pay taxes... as I know the answer and no one who knew would want the current situation to change - it would lose taxpayers a lot of money!

Isn't air ambulance pilot a proper job then? Confused

Sixweekstowait · 07/08/2014 20:03

Well I am full of admiration - 32 year old man gets a job after a year of doing nothing. He will train for six months and then work for 18 months and that's it!! The ' job' was of course advertised inline with best equal opportunities practice and he underwent a most rigorous selection procedure. Could someone please explain to me why in the 21st century we put up with the sheer and utter crap of people being born into positions of influence and wealth and a huge majority of the rest of us think thus is wonderful and should bow and curtesy if we met them . FFS - I absolutely despair

OP posts:
kilmuir · 07/08/2014 20:06

You are an idiot Op.

Bue · 07/08/2014 20:09

So you complained that his expensive training was wasted and that he should get a proper job.

Now he gets a proper job (sorry, a 'job' according to you) and you complain that he only got it because he's been born into a position of influence and wealth.

OK then Hmm

Sixweekstowait · 07/08/2014 20:14

Bue - I think six months training for 18 months work is a pretty poor return. Kilmuir - you must be a royalist - I can't think of a higher compliment than being called an idiot by a royalist . Perhaps you might like to explain why nepotism and inherited privilege should underpin a 21st century society. No thought not

Good on William.

Maybe he read this thread and decided he'd better get a proper job Wink

Sounds like the OP will never be happy whatever he does!

Nomama · 07/08/2014 20:29

Where do you get 18 months feom - it's "...at least two years following 6 months training"

And he'll be donating the post tax salary back to a charity - yes, he is paying income tax and national insurance.

So, at about 35 he'll go back to being a full time 'Royal'.

If you're going to castigate someone, do it for some real reasons, don't just froth at the mouth, incoherently.

... and why doesn't the queen have to pay taxes?

AuntieStella · 07/08/2014 20:36

"No, Hakluyt you don't. Atm you need 240 UCAS points to get into Sandhurst, a C& a D would give you 140."

The key bit tree being atm

When Prince Harry joined, it was 120 points. He exceeded that.

Hakluyt · 07/08/2014 20:52

Is there a shortage air ambulance pilots?

Droflove · 07/08/2014 20:56

Maybe William saw OPs post?

AuntieStella · 07/08/2014 20:56

Accordingto PPrune and airpilotsjobs websites, yes there is.

Droflove · 07/08/2014 20:57

And maybe Kate is on mumsnet. But I'd advise her not to be because people are mean about her family on here.

caroldecker · 07/08/2014 22:24

bourdic and what your alternative head of state look like?

MarchEliza · 07/08/2014 22:45

William will draw a £40k salary in his role with the air ambulance which he is fully donating to charity.

I don't really understand the anger (and downright nastiness in some cases) that thy provoke. They will be damned whatever they do.

UrbaneLandlord · 07/08/2014 23:11

Bourdic: Perhaps you might like to explain why nepotism and inherited privilege should underpin a 21st century society.

I think you're wrong about it being "nepotism", Bourdic. Royal succession is not something the Queen has any influence over. It is a matter of law.

You're right about them having "inherited privilege", but ignoring the "inherited duties & burdens" that go with it. I'd say that Queen Elizabeth is one of the hardest-working 88 year olds in world history!

Speaking personally, I'm what you would describe as a "Royalist". The main reason why I'm a "Royalist" is that I'm also a libertarian. I'm delighted to have a head of state who has no power (to boss me about) but a very great deal of soft influence & a massive global presence.

I've got a picture of Queen Elizabeth on a Golden Jubilee special edition biscuit tin displayed on a shelf in my kitchen. If she ever comes round for tea I'll stock it up with the most expensive biscuits I can find in the Co-op, plus hoover the hall carpet.

Nomama · 07/08/2014 23:18

Bourdic isn't going to answer any questions. After this

... praise the queen for paying tax she doesn't have to pay without questioning why she doesn't have to in the first place?

I have repeatedly asked why Bourdic thinks the queen does not pay taxes... no answer.

So don't hold your breath. Answers are not necessary, it seems. Just throw an idea out there and who cares if there's is any substance to it.

Wantsunshine · 07/08/2014 23:20

I am sure he will be able to select his shifts around his lifestyle to attend sporting events. His colleagues won't. Oh well some people are just lucky. It happens.

Hakluyt · 07/08/2014 23:26

Happy to answer on Bourdic's behalf. The queen does pay tax- but she doesn't have to. She started paying on a voluntary basis in 1990something, I think. So up til then she didn't. Does that answer your question?

steff13 · 07/08/2014 23:27

As an American, and friend to the British people, I would like to offer to open my home to Harry, so that he is no longer a drain on your resources. He can live with me, and I will put him to work at a proper job depending on your definition of proper. It will be a sacrifice, of course, but one I'm willing to make. Please send his military uniforms with him. Wink

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 07/08/2014 23:52

Just a small point. William 'left' his previous proper job as a Search & Rescue pilot because his 4 yr tour was coming to an end and the service was privatised by the government. An American firm won the contract.

Other pilots were reabsorbed into the RAF or allowed to apply for jobs in the new service with Bristow PLC

Nomama · 07/08/2014 23:57

Nope, Hakluyt. it doesn't explain why she does not have to, just why she chose to pay, despite not being legally obliged to.

I know why (George III and the Crown Estate), I just thought that the OP might want to check facts before trying to score some points. Especially as the reality makes the point being made, totally moot.
