To think that after all the money spent on their military training that Harry and William should have proper jobs?

Just that really - all they ever seem to do is go to sporting events

And not being a huge royalist I think the boys do an ok job.

Viviennemary · 04/08/2014 16:46

I can't be bothered with the royals. They're not proper people so until they are they won't have proper jobs.

EveDallasRetd · 04/08/2014 16:49

Neither Prince draws their military wage - that in itself isn't unusual, the Forces have a number of officers that do the same.

Harry has done two tours of Afg. One 4 month, one 6 month. He gets the same amount of personal leave as every other soldier - 38 working days including Bank Holidays. He also has an 'allowance' of days that he uses every year to perform his Royal duties - these are agreed with his Commander at the start of every year.

His trip to the Commonwealth Games this year would have been part of his allowance. There were a number of British military personnel competing that he wished to meet, as well as the other athletes.

William would never have been allowed a 'real' military career because of what he is. He completed a 'reduced' contract that allowed him to gain experience of all 3 Services - necessary as one day he will be Head of the Armed Forces and it is better for him to understand. His father did the same and is well respected in the Military for his depth of knowledge into military service and life. Harry is on a normal military Reg C (converted) contract. I would like to think he could complete at least 16 years (the norm) as he is good at what he does, very good. The Army needs more people like him, whatever their background.

raydown · 04/08/2014 16:52

I'm sure I read that William did draw his wage when he was working as search and rescue pilot. He's had the past year off while he decided what he wanted to do Hmm

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 04/08/2014 16:55

In this day and age we shouldn't have a royal family. Elizabeth and the rest of her family need to step down.

CaptChaos · 04/08/2014 17:00

What EveDallas said.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2014 17:12

They need to step down and do what exactly would stepping down also include moving out of their house where would they go the queen is in her 80s

Can't stand William.
But have a soft spot for Harry :)

Hakluyt · 04/08/2014 17:16

"They need to step down and do what exactly would stepping down also include moving out of their house where would they go the queen is in her 80s"

Oh, I'd let her keep Balmoral for the rest of her life - it's her favourite.

And as for the rest, if they are so intelligent and talented and hard working as you say they'd easily find jobs.

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2014 17:23

Tbf I didnt say they werd intelligent or had working I just said they had jobs being a royal is hardly down a mine Grin

Mrsjayy · 04/08/2014 17:24

Were and hard obviously

weatherall · 04/08/2014 17:27

I don't think they should be taking up jobs other people could do when there's millions unemployed.

They should be doing charity work.

I used to be pro the monarchy but since this generation just takes and takes and does nothing for the underprivileged I am now a republican.

Mrsmorton · 04/08/2014 17:51

Yes, millions of unemployed people with the aptitude to be helicopter pilots...

And obviously, they don't do ANY charity work.

Now, is it just the Royals who shouldn't work because they don't need to or is it any aristo? What about their expensive university education, should they not be allowed that either because of the place taken up that could have been used by someone else?

HeySoulSister · 04/08/2014 17:58

Op what job to YOU do?

Hold on, where is op??

FreudiansSlipper · 04/08/2014 17:59

I find it hard to believe that the royals cost us all 57p or 65p a year

their security runs into millions of pounds

and really I do not care how little they cost me, personally I do not want to fund a spoilt and ridiculously privileged family that are so out of touch that I do not even have the option to vote for

and as for the tourist argument, it may be part of the attraction but we shall still have millions of visitors a year if they become part of our history as we have so much else to offer

They should be doing charity work.

Ye coz they don't do charity work do they. Or hundreds of engagements throughout the year (on top of their 'paid' work)

MorphineDreams · 04/08/2014 18:15

The bitterness is unbelievable.

MANY people are privileged because of being born into money, least the royals actually give something back.

The queen willingly pays tax on things she technically doesn't need to.
Their charity work is exemplarily.

Oh and if we didn't have the royal family it's been estimated our taxes would actually have to go up. Is that what you want?

MostWicked · 04/08/2014 18:22

Viviennemary How do they become "proper people" then?
And what are they now if they're not?!

limitedperiodonly · 04/08/2014 18:23

I really like Harry; William less so because he's shaping up to be a boring, grumpy stick much like his dad.

But the public service argument really makes me laugh. They both have a pilot licence, I imagine they know how to handle a speedboat and a fast car.

Their future careers as international playboys at our expense seems assured. At least Harry's does. I just hope he's learned from his doltish Uncle Andrew's mistakes.

And I really hope Harry doesn't lose his looks like Andrew. That would be too unfair seeing as he's grown into them in the last decade.

Hakluyt · 04/08/2014 18:24

Isn't it funny that being a republican means you're bitter! I'm not even remotely bitter- I'm just a republican!

It's like saying royalists are sycophants .....

gordyslovesheep · 04/08/2014 18:24

I'd be more worried about the 'proper jobs' never held by the people who have actual power - such as Cameron and Clegg and Miliband

they actually have power to effect your daily life - none of them have had 'real' jobs ever

I'd say, even as a non royalist, William and Harry have worked hard in their current roles

diddl · 04/08/2014 18:29

"Oh, I'd let her keep Balmoral for the rest of her life - it's her favourite."

It is also hers, isn't it?

Along with Sandringham?

I'm sure that they could all fit into those two estates!

limitedperiodonly · 04/08/2014 18:32

We can vote for Cameron, Clegg and Miliband. Or more properly, we can vote for a constituency MP and when it's all totted up, the leader of the triumphant party gets to be Prime Minister.

I can't vote for Princess Anne. She's just there on every Remembrance Sunday wearing her naval uniform.
