Why the HELL is there a half inch gap on either side of the door in all public toilets?? You can see everything going on!!!
This has been the case everywhere I've been in America?

Curiosity that brought back bad memories! The worst was a two day train trip through China with one loo like those pics. The hole of the loo just opened onto the track so you could see that racing below and there were handles to try and keep yourself steady as the train was wobbling along. Needless to say few people hit the target cos there was "stuff" everywhere around the hole and where you were supposed to stand!

I have to say France is getting much, much better. We only had one squatter on our fortnight's holiday - soooo much better than our last trip 5 years ago. Although as I didn't have the wicked, wicked food poisoning this time round it wasn't so much of a deal...

I once had the misfortune to be wearing long slim fitting skirt and recently recovered from knee surgery. I had to squat with one leg and extend the other leg infront of me, with skirt hitched up. I managed it, being younger and fitter back then.

The US toilets don't bother me.

I actually couldn't find a picture of the worst one. There was one that had a stream of water running through the middles of all the urinals. So whatever someone did at the far end passed under you. Then there would be the curious kids who just stood to watch the westerner try and balance Those were the days. Never had a complaint about a toilet since

Commodes are seats with a bedpan in them, usually for use by the elderly or ill who cant make it to a bathroom. Toilets are....toilets! In that picture they are definitely toilets!

Has anyone been to India? My cousins had an outdoor toilet that you squat over and sometimes mid poo you can hear curious munching sounds.

yes been in florida and agree. also hate the shape of the loos generally but most are clean and there are loads not just 1 or 2.

also do other people put paper on the loo seat, I don't.

This idea that germs defy gravity and jump up your bum.

Plus by putting paper on your hand is nearer to the seat than it otherwise needs to be if you just fricken put your bum on it

oh yes, the Indian pig toilet, once very widespread particularly in Goa, now largely a thing of the past.
Actually as long as the pig is not going to get eaten, it seems quite a good way to deal with human waste in areas where there is no plumbing or sewers.

what a waste of paper. I saw it with my own eyes today at miami airport as a family swapped over and there was no loo paper in another loo.

Some up thread said that it is used in some areas to mean toilet.

The British have hundreds of euphemisms for going to the loo: powder one's nose, spend a penny, see a man about a dog, etc etc
To see a man about a dog means going to the pub I think.

Anyway, it's been years since I have heard anyone say that they are going to spend a penny.

But you wouldn't say you're going to the lamp to mean you need to use the lamp.

Practically speaking, I have no idea. They just do, and you get weird looks if they don't. I'd feel weird letting toddler DD run around at a public pool with no top past the baby stage.

Why do you guys say "Quite good" when you really mean "Not good at all"? Some things are just weird cultural quirks.
