To be seriously annoyed about security of my children in this Villa

I was on holiday last week in a lovely Villa in France with a some friends and their children. It had 5 bedrooms and we were told that one was a bit separate from the others and was a great room for kids. But it was in fact up a separate stair case and over the garage!
I didn't feel safe having any of the children out there, the oldest two are 11 and 12 and maybe they would have been ok but it just wasn't worth risking it. Am I being unreasonable to complain to the agency about this?

Which aspect was of concern?
The separate stairs or the garage?

Sirzy · 01/08/2014 14:53

Why the need to complain to the agency? Surely if there are 5 bedrooms you just use another for the children which is more appropriate?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/08/2014 14:54

How old are the kids?

Hakluyt · 01/08/2014 14:54

Sounds fine to me. What's the problem?

Kendodd · 01/08/2014 14:54

11 and 12 yo using a separate staircase? I don't really understand the problem.

Pastperfect · 01/08/2014 14:55

Sounds fine to me - what was your concern?

Kendodd · 01/08/2014 14:55

Unless the garage the bedroom was about was located miles away I think it's fine.

dalziel1 · 01/08/2014 14:55

a little unreasonable. You should have asked for clarification before booking if you felt that it could have been a concern.

What did you children think of it?

Nicknacky · 01/08/2014 14:55

Why didn't the adults stay in that room?

wheresthelight · 01/08/2014 14:56

Kids to me go up to 16/17 so it's completely reasonableto describe it as suitable.

What are yyou hoping to achieve by complaining?

TheWholeOfTheSpoon · 01/08/2014 14:56

We stayed in a villa just like that when I was a teenager. I made the mistake of watching a horror movie and barely slept again for the entire trip Grin

sherbetpips · 01/08/2014 14:56

sounds the perfect place to keep noisy kids but surely you could have gone in there if you didnt want them there?

Icimoi · 01/08/2014 14:57

Presumably the door was lockable. I can't see the problem.

HoneyTits · 01/08/2014 14:58

Did they feel too far away and not part of the main house?

I wouldn't complain as I don't think there's any reason to, the agents probably thought it would be nice for kids and adults to have a bit of space from each other.

Just choose a different set up, you didn't have to go with their recommendations.

SirChenjin · 01/08/2014 14:58

So why didn't the children stay in the main house and some of the adults stay in the garage room Confused. I would have loved a separate staircase when I was 11 and 12 - sounds brilliant!

YABU to complain.

Hulababy · 01/08/2014 14:59

Was the garage not part of the house? Was it separate?

Layout is not clear

GrainDeMalice · 01/08/2014 15:01

How was it described in the details?

fluffyfanjo · 01/08/2014 15:01

You say that you went away with friends and their Children.

Why didn't you or the other adults use the bedroom over the garage ?

What do you want to achieve by complaining ? Compensation ? 2 weeks free in on an exclusive private island with your own butler.................

If the garage was a separate building, then saying '5 bedroom' is misleading (should have said something like '4 plus annex bedroom').

Separate staircases to some rooms is common, especially in older farmhouse type buildings.

I don't think you have grounds for complaint. But would suggest you seek 'new build' villas in future.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 01/08/2014 15:07

How much money are you wanting back then?

Bigmissty · 01/08/2014 15:09

Ok ok I confess this is a reverse AIBU!

My job is to manage the rentals of a villa and guests that were there last week have made exactly this complaint, they felt that although the garage was linked to the house and the doors of it were secure and lockable that it was t secure enough!
This is in rural France in small sleepy village and virtually no crime. The door between the house and the garage leads into the living room of the house and I think children over the age of 8 would be absolutely fine and can't understand what the problem is really. We have had 2 families complain about this already this year, so I am trying to work out if it really is a problem or just a case of over protective parenting!

YABU if it was all one building behind one front door.

YANBU if the garage was separate and effectively an annex.

Branleuse · 01/08/2014 15:11

im not sure i can see the problem. Great for kids is obviously a statement open to your own interpretation because kids come in a wide range of ages and abilities.

Branleuse · 01/08/2014 15:12

id change the wording tbh to great for older kids.

You need to take idiots into account
