To ask for your help in finding a marina/ quayside townhouse

Househuntingwoes · 31/07/2014 18:55

NC as I've been asking around IRL too.

DH and I would love to live in a townhouse on a marina or quayside.

Both of us are able to live anywhere in England except Devon or Cornwall (for work travelling reason) and don't want to be too far north (for weather reasons Grin)

The problem with having no real ties to where you want to live is that it makes narrowing it down hard!

We've seen houses we like at Salford Quays in Manchester, Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne and Port Solent near Portsmouth so that gives an idea of the kind of thing we want.

Are there any other similar developments we should consider (even ones that aren't built yet but are planned)?

Bloody typos- waterpark!

Why freehold? We're leasehold purely because we have communal gardens. I would think a fair amount if marina places are leasehold too, they are round here.

dagnabbit · 31/07/2014 21:01

Preston Marina has some apartments on Riversway Docklands. Look on rightmove. Preston is only 30 miles ish from Manchester as I've noticed you've been considering salford quays. I'm biased probably but preston is my hometown and is not a bad place

dagnabbit · 31/07/2014 21:02

And it's not too far from preston town centre, has lots of facilities nearby too: supermarket, cinema, pubs, restaurants etc

jenster1976 · 31/07/2014 21:03

Faversham, the creek has lovely water side houses some with moorings, bugger all gardens. Relatively cheap for south east and commutable for London, haven't actually looked for any properties for you though I'm afraid! But I know there ate some nice ones.

Househuntingwoes · 31/07/2014 21:06

We don't want the hassle of leasehold conditions- not bothered about a garden - just a decking/ balcony would be fine.

Hythe in Hampshire has some.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 31/07/2014 21:13

Ipswich?

Sunshine200 · 31/07/2014 21:19

I live in town house on Poole Quay - love it here. Don't know of any new developments though.

sleepdodger · 31/07/2014 21:28

Watch out for flood risk!

SquinkiesRule · 31/07/2014 21:34

If Chester is somewhere you can work from. there are lots of Commuters to there from our area of North Wales. It's about an hour away.

Ormally · 31/07/2014 21:38

Abingdon, OX14

(sad face...miss it very much).

Lovely position and lovely amenities. Sounds like it is just what you are hoping for. The Marina houses do not come up all that often and do not stay around on the market for long.

Laska42 · 31/07/2014 21:38

Have you been to Port Solent? It's at the top of a long harbour (so quite far from open sea) and right behind it is a busy motorway..

Househuntingwoes · 31/07/2014 21:39

Thanks squinkies but my job involves visiting most of the offices in England so I need one on my doorstep and need to be able to travel to the others- being an hour from even the first one would just mean I spend my life in my car.

Any suggestions on canal side wharfs- just found one in Milton Keynes that has potential.

Chester?

Househuntingwoes · 31/07/2014 21:49

Loving the idea of Chester but can only find flats.....

Househuntingwoes · 31/07/2014 21:50

Abingdon looks fab!

Apsley Lock, Hemel Hempstead?

Catsize · 31/07/2014 22:00

Have had a quick look, but can't see anything at first glance. However, there ARE riverside and canalside houses, some of which must be for sale. Might be worth giving the local estate agents a bell. It is a fab place to live.

Ormally · 31/07/2014 22:06

It is...I won't go into raptures over everything good about it or everyone will discover my secret!

Our firm intention is to retire there (if it takes that long - may get an excuse to go back earlier). Go and visit, get a feel for it.

Ormally · 31/07/2014 22:07

Sorry-that sounds like it is a retirement haven! Lots of younger folk there too!!

cozietoesie · 31/07/2014 22:09

A couple of nights ago, I saw a program on the effects of a mega-tsunami with particular reference to the caving in of half the Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands. If you're still just looking, have you maybe thought about a nice high hillside somewhere?

ChippyMinton · 31/07/2014 22:14

Abingdon not right on the river but about 30 seconds walk, and in the town centre. The marina is nice but out on a limb.

Have a look along the Thames valley Reading to Sunbury - houses do come up but you risk being in the flood plain.

Janethegirl · 31/07/2014 22:20

Agree, some nice properties in Nottingham, either on the canal or Beeston canal. Some in long eaton on the erewash canal too

Janethegirl · 31/07/2014 22:20

Sorry, meant the Trent or Beeston canal
