to be fed up with all the constant sport on TV?

LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2014 20:21

I am just fed up with it. World cup, Wimbledon, Golf, Formula 1, now the Commonwealth Games.

Why is it on the main channels? Why isn't it on BBC 3 or 4? Why is it on BBC 1, as if it is THE most important thing on TV?

I bet the audiences for the Commonwealth Games are not high. Even DH. is not watching it and he will watch almost any sport.

I think it is an imposition on the majority of the population and a huge assumption that we are that interested. Am I being unreasonable.

There is only ever total rubbish on during the day and no new series in the summer.

I'm certain DD2 wasn't the only teen girl who was delighted to spend the afternoon watching gymnastics (her hobby), just as I love Wimbledon having played tennis a lot(badly).

Likewise I'm sure her DFs who swim and run seriously are delighted to have a rest from wall to wall football.

Yoruba · 29/07/2014 22:03

YADNBU OP. it's desperately tedious.

I do love it when people say "oh but we are so obese in this country watching sport on TV will definitely help that!" :o

There are whole CHANNELS for sport, why not just keep it there?

BarleyBub · 29/07/2014 22:05

Why should sport be kept to it's own channels? What's wrong with it being on regular TV? Why not put all the soaps on their own channels, or all the reality TV crap? Why can't people cope with the fact that different things are on TV at different times of the year?

BoneyBackJefferson · 29/07/2014 22:24

Andrewofgg
"YANBU - The BBC is simply shafting licence-payers who don't enjoy professional games-playing."

By your reckoning those of us that do not watch the mainstream rubbish (soaps, reality shows, fakes reality shows, BGT etc.) and sports are getting screwed over 90% of the time, welcome to our world.

partialderivative · 29/07/2014 22:26

So... OP, do you think that the BBC should focus only on popular tv shows? Fortunately, it has a wider agenda.

The original remit of the BBC, I think, was to Inform, Entertain and Educate.

I think it does a fantastic job. If you don't like it, there are millions who do.

Sirzy · 29/07/2014 22:27

I would rather have sport on tv than most reality shows!

You can't please all the people all the time. The showing of the World Cup final on two channels at the same time bugged me but generally if it's not a sport I am interested in I turn over or turn off.

LuluJakey1 · 29/07/2014 22:40

I never said I didn't like the BBC- I love it on the whole.

I would just like to see a wider range of high quality stuff- more. dramas and films, more documentaries, high quality current affairs humour.

I love Wimbledon, enjoy the FA cup final, enjoyed the Olympics. I just get sick of all the other sport that they put on. Winter Olympics, World Cup, Golf, Formula 1. Formula 1 is the worst. I am baffled by what the attraction is of it.

The other weekend there was sport on BBC 1 and 2 on Sunday afternoon and on ITV1. Personal opinion, it's too much. I was not well enough to go out- pregnant and had had some bleeding and DH was away. I couldn't find anything that wasn't sport, a reality show or just crap.

I think the thing I hate most is The One Show with the not very bright, poorly educated Welsh woman- an hour every night. (Waits to be flamed)

It's why I don't watch much TV really.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 29/07/2014 23:22

Now the One show us rubbish, but that slot has frequently been rubbish.

If you're really ancient, you might remember Nationwide that was crap too!

HeySoulSister · 29/07/2014 23:30

Well what's been rescheduled?

And if you don't watch much tv op why are you moaning?

HeySoulSister · 29/07/2014 23:30

And yes! Where is the cricket this summer?

BackforGood · 29/07/2014 23:30

YABU.
Things like the Commonwealth Games, and the World Cup pull in much greater numbers of viewers than watch Athletics and all the other sports on offer, generally, or than watch football generally, as it's the National Teams in action. I love the human stories they always unearth.

They will last for 10 or 11 days, once every 4 years.

OTOH, there can be several nights in a row when I can't find a single thing I want to watch on either BBC1 or ITV, when sport isn't on - which is the majority of the time. Week in, week out there is all sorts of rubbish on that the rest of us either put up with, or decide to not watch TV.

curiousgeorgie · 29/07/2014 23:36

YANBU... My DH is a sports nut and even he isn't watching it.

It is very dull and very annoying.

Andrewofgg · 29/07/2014 23:48

Boney I agree. It's just that this is an eleven-day orgy of sport.

Lily Perhaps it's all a Cunning Plan to get us to switch off and get out more! Anyway online grumping is my hobby. I'm much nicer in RL.

GatoradeMeBitch · 30/07/2014 02:03

You're BU to want the sports you like on TV, but not the ones you don't. We don't all have LuluJakey1's exact tastes!

Yes, how terrible that the Commonwealth games has temporarily bumped all those high quality repeats of Eggheads, Michael Portillo's Great British Railways and Antiques Road Trip off BBC2...

chipsandpeas · 30/07/2014 06:20

im loving it.....and if it inspires one person to get off their arse and do some exercise like the dude who took up marathon running after the olympics then came 10th in the commonwealth games then its all good

WeBelieveInLove · 30/07/2014 06:36

One thing that always baffled me is why they put sport on the news channel. Why is sport a part of the news hour? Just why?? Confused

ChelsyHandy · 30/07/2014 06:40

Its because its summer, and outdoor sports tend to take place in summer.

Just how hard is it to press a button to change channels to one of the incredibly boring soap operas that's boring all year round? Or maybe even to venture outdoors yourself?

VerityWaves · 30/07/2014 06:46

I hate soaps and I totally agree with you.

Then a repeat of the coverage on the bloody news! It's just sport for gods sake. They are not Gods because they have a massive talent.

naturalbaby · 30/07/2014 06:47

What should be on t.v instead? Sport is pretty much the only live t.v my family watches these days - can't find anything else interesting to watch!
There's hardly anything interesting on t.v during the summer anyway.
Change the channel or put netflix/lovefilm/blinkbox on.

hoboken · 30/07/2014 06:56

Try radio. All the subjects under the sun and every kind of music there is. You can also do something else while you listen - walk, run, shop, cook, lie out in the sun, be in bed with a wet flannel over your aching head etc etc.

I refuse to let what is or what is not on the box in the corner get to me. Not a sport-hater by the way, was at Hampden Stadium for CW athletics earlier in the week. There's just so much else to do.

ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 30/07/2014 07:01

YADDNBU. But please nooo don't suggest it all goes to Bbc4! Shock. My beloved bbc4 is the only channel left on TV that gives me hope of finding anything remotely interesting to watch anymore.

LilyandGinger · 30/07/2014 07:20

Andrew very pleased to hear it!!

pudcat · 30/07/2014 07:29

Try radio - even our local BBC radio station has sent at least 3 presenters to the Games. Surely there is enough coverage elsewhere.
