What a brilliant response to any complaints without having to justify your rude, inconsiderate or anti social behaviour.

Just mention the words 'Victor Meldrew' and people are immediately meant to back down feeling like grumpy so and sos.

AIBU to think that this is often a last resort lazy argument by people who know they have no real justification for their, or their kids', crap behaviour,

I always liked Victor and was very upset by the end of the series.

Does make me think "old" in the 90's isn't the same as "old" now. Given the bloke who played Victor is late 70's/early 80's so many years after the series ended

4291? Hello? Oh it's a little dog not a phone . Has me and DH in stitches every time. Their house was always so clean but they did seem old before their time. Tonight's rerun featured Victor buying a haunted caravan....happy days

But seriously - he looked old then (I'm 25) but George Clooney is roughly that age and isn't considered "old".

Interesting how perceptions of age have changed in 20 years or so.

Isn't he forced to take early retirement in the first episode? So he would be 60ish I guess. Lots of beige and floral prints didn't help them look younger!

YANBU OP. It has become a kind of dismissive shorthand. In my book Victor was often right but OTT.

I was a great programme. I do find it odd that reviews never seemed to mention the fact that something genuinely dreadful always happened, or was mentioned, in each episode. The revelation of abuse in a retirement home, the next door neighbour killing someone in a RTA, the revelation that Victor and Margaret had a child who died are a few that come to mind.

I loved the long episode where they went on holiday with Mrs Warboise and thought that they'd been put in jail, but it was actually their apartment. They eventually realised and just opened the door.

It was something that you could watch with all the family, comedy isn't the same these days. Sigh.

My favourite bit was when they were stuck in the car on a day out and put the stereo on and found that the garage mechanics had recorded an insulting song to the tune of Cwm Rhondda.

That the programme makers had got not-very-good singers to record it made it even funnier.

Yanbu - it is one of those phrases that has become stock for trying to belittle someone who has dared raise an issue.

I call my little brother Victor Meldrew sometimes though, he can be terribly serious for an 18 year old!
