All those poor young lads in black leather trench-coats. All those...er...curvy young ladies in their corsets and chunky boots. No wonder all their hair goes crimpy.

I'm going to put a saucer of snakebite outside the back door tonight. Might help a bit.

Ahhhh the sullen expression ! I remember vividly being on a coach on the way to a Cure gig and seeing a friend on the road outside, but I wouldn't permit myself to smile and wave, and even if I tried there was so much black lipstick on I could barely move my lips !!

I know, my poor deluded dad. Didn't he realise we were the epitome of misunderstood genius, the world just didn't understand us at all.

Ay, we knew how to be proper miserable in those days! (As i have mentioned to my DCs Grin)

Thankyou for thinking of my brethren OP ;)

I was melting today in my ankle length black skirt and corset, and I am afraid I may have caught the sun whilst sitting in the park with the other mums after school pick up!

I was a goth affiliate in my youth (late 90s-early 00s) never quite a fully paid up member though. Do you get many younger goths these days? Never see many about anymore, most are my age+

Not many PeppermintInfusion, no. It's a problem with promoting festivals etc - do you just book the Mission (again) or do you aim for some young blood, as it were, & piss off all the 40something ladies in corsets & tasselled skirts Grin.

I think the misunderstood young people dressing in black are emos nowadays.

My daughter aged 7 is showing goth tendencies, going out with vampire makeup on and wearing an Emily the Strange T shirt...

I'm not nor have ever been a goth. ( twee indie kid, me)

I passed a girl goth on my dog walk today. She had a floor length black velvet dress on, a shawl, in black lace obviously, and a black lace parasol. She looked quite wafty and cool. I was envious of her parasol. Her boyfriend look like he was dying of heat exhaustion in his leather jacket.

All power to them for sticking with what they like though.

They were late teens btw.

As an ex goth I'd like to thank you for your concern op.

One summer day in the early 90s I went out in a lace ballgown with long lace sleeves. When I got home and disrobed (goths never do anything as mundane as undress) my arms had tanned in a lovely lacy pattern. Oh the shame. Still at least it was a lacy goth tan.

That was the same summer that I used to sit in a graveyard wearing a massive black hat reading Edgar Allan Poe like a total wanker

I owe my lack of wrinkles to my late punk/early goth leanings as a teen.
I never went out in the sun and if I left the house I had a good inch of foundation on to protect me from the elements

Well if we're having a Gother Than Thou competition, the gothest thing I used to do in the summer was to lay perfectly still to get flies to crawl on me so I could pretend I was dead.

Great thread! I too had a tassel skirt and paisley shirt from the local market and "artfully" replaced the laces in my plimsolls with purple ribbons. I was what was known as a "mini goth" - some elements of goth but on a less full-on way. We used to hang out in the town centre graveyard too. A girl we knew had those Indian bells and we used to call her Tibetan yak. I am glad to have been liberated from the thick black tights though. They were hot. My look was not'
My 12 yr old DD and I have regular discussions about goths v. emo's.

Your concern is touching. However, despite the wonderful weather, my insides shudder at the very thought of 'linen', 'cropped', or 'flip flop'. And as a now middle aged goth, I am ever grateful for the slimming qualities of black, regardless of heat. I did draw the line at my leather jacket tonight though, settling instead for holey, manky looking black cardi...

I solved tbe problem of DM boots being too hot to wear by buying DM sandals.
Unfortunately they were so heavy I could barely walk in them. I'd go a few feet then stand rocking trying to get them off the ground .

I had calves like an athlete by the time September came around.

Saucy you win. Although I used to go on tv/in magazines and newspapers saying I was a vampire. Was great, they used to give me money and once I was on a chat show with Audrey off Corrie and Pat off EastEnders. Was surreal to say the least. We all got pissed afterwards too Grin

Ophelia, I think I saw you on TV! In the 1990s? Do you still claim to be a vampire....?

GothMummy have I just outed myself?! Yes, was early 90s - what show do you think you saw me on? I was on quite a few. And no, those days are looong gone (though a part of me will be forever goth Grin)

Ophelia, if you are who I am thinking of we missed our lectures at uni to stay in and watch you on a chat show! Me and DH used to run the Goth Soc at uni.

Im very toned down now too (and too old for lots of my old clothes now) but whilst work colleagues and school mums consider me to be "goth" todays goths do not recognise me as one of them! They just see a middle aged woman with kids/scooters and a dog ;)

Whitby goth weekend is full of us old goths with kids now :)

I've been surviving by using DD's factor 50 suncream since the beginning of June and wearing a long sleeved lacey gypsy tops rather than my trench coat, my long black skirts are actually pretty cool, its the boots that are killing me.

DH however is struggling with his leather jacket.

Where are these saucers of snake bite and absinthe please?
