All those poor young lads in black leather trench-coats. All those...er...curvy young ladies in their corsets and chunky boots. No wonder all their hair goes crimpy.

I'm going to put a saucer of snakebite outside the back door tonight. Might help a bit.

AndromedaGal My kids, exGoths used to go to the Electric Ballroom.

It's still going strong as far as I can see - I googled it - but obviously not at the moment due to covid - it was going to shut down at one point because that part of Camden was going to be sold off for development but things changed and it lived to fight another day.

I well remember many a Friday evening sitting painting my son's nails with black nail varnish while he and his sister and friends got ready for their evening out.

Happy days.

This thread is 7 years old by the way.

This thread has made me nostalgic. I miss young adult subcultures! Do they still exist?

Oh those Friday nights at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. Such a good laugh. Used to catch the train up, after working a day shift at Maccy D’s, (I was a student at the time!!) & boost the energy levels with some meds (ahem), then dance like crazy in a full-on goth ball gown ha ha

I’m grown up & sensible now but honestly, so pleased I had a wild stage. Now I go to bed at 9pm with some biscuits

I think my favourite t-shirt sums it up:

I walk a fine geek/goth line. Probably much further on the geek side than I like to think I am. Wink

Yy to a MN whitby meet up! Who is going in November?

I'll be merch birding on the Saturday night - well, that or being hauled around the dancefloor by dd2 busting some moves (her, not me)...Grin.

Probably taking ds to this in a couple of weeks -alt-fest.com/2014/ - anyone else?

What about Inferno at the Electric Ballroom? It's still going, and we still go (albeit about once a year now!)

I only went to Slimelight a few times (quite the pilgrimage from Dublin, involving a trip to the Black Rose to try to get a glimpse of the beautiful - oh, what was her name? Something like Lala, but not that silly?) - it was brilliant fun, but I think I enjoyed Jilly's Rockworld in Manchester more!

I knew somebody who had Mick Mercer's book - it was such a treat to read.

Dublin goth here too... We probably knew each other, Sp1rals - it was a small world! Did you go to Fibbers/The Tower/Dominion?

I'm sure we know each other. I was doing Slimelight around 95-00 ish. Mostly lived in Leeds (wendyhouse, and the bar phono black sheep Sunday early evening thing) and Cambridge (the calling, wake up screaming).

To be honest, we probably came out of Slimelight with some of the same beautiful boys. Mostly I wasn't interested unless they had long straight black hair and lots of makeup. Grin

(Completely outed now!)

I was a SL regular mid-late 90s. Used to start getting ready watching Blind Date at about 7pm but not leaving the house til midnight coated in Stargazer and Barry M make-up!

Spirals, I remember sending away for Mick Mercers book by mail order, then keeping it in the car so I could find goth shops when I was in a strange city.

One of my friends is quoted a mick mercer book about goth parenting (does anyone remember the yahoo group gothic parents?)

I bet we all know each other by sight at least!
My Dh still has waist length back hair and is wearing new rocks and a black kilt today. I have slid into "vintage/rockabilly/1950s style". Its easier to do at work.

Michaela Oh my god Slimelight! Drinks at The Blue Angel first. And The Electric Ballroom on a Friday. Happy days indeed Smile

And yy to beautiful boys who revealed themselves as crusty faced horrors in the morning light Grin

When were you going to SL? I probably knew you by sight at least!

A few years ago we had a goth teenager as a babysitter. Used to get back to find her teaching my fascinated dc how to play chess and do vampire makeup. She was a star, we were all rather sad when her family moved away (further into suburbia, she was not amused!).

Aaah fishnet tans. :-)

Anyone remember staggering out of Slimelight (or similar) at 7.30am on a sunday morning with someone who you'd just met and was utterly GORGEOUS in the club, until you saw them in the daylight and the crusty white face paint wasn't quite so attractive?

still, egg butties and endless mugs of tea in the greasy spoon cafes around Angel (near the market) made it ALL better.

then back on the first train home to sleep it off before the working week began again. wistful sigh

Oh this is great! I was a goth too but in Dublin. Still have little touches that wing their way into my wardrobe and still listen to the music.
There are no goths any more! They are goth lite, not like the real thing at all. God how SERIOUSLY I took it all. I remember getting Mick Mercers book, was like a goth a-z and having trembling hands as I handed the money over. Pre Internet, things like that were a big deal.
