To think that at a buffet you can take as much as you want

Went out today with dsis. We were starving by lunchtime and there was a huge buffet where we went (hotel), it was included in the price so we took loads as were hungry.
Noticed a couple of women really staring as we loaded our plates up and also when we took lots of the mini desserts and as we walked past one loudly said " I can't believe they are actually going to eat all that"
They kept staring at us and giving us funny looks.

Made me wonder if we really did take too much, surely as we had paid and were hungry it was ok ? I felt a bit judged as they clearly thought we were greedy

Majority of my family eat a lot and are tall and slim, we like our food, have fast metabolisms and do walk a lot/exercise. Even DM who is in her sixties is still same size as her 30s its just how we are but that's not the issue.

The issue was people making rude comments and the fact I took too much food in one go. I was wrong for being greedy and they were wrong for judging us.

I honestly don't think I've ever noticed how much anyone has taken at a buffet. Confused

BellaVita · 20/07/2014 19:53

I am confused as to why you would have pasta salad and potato salad on one plate... Surely it is one or the other. Didn't the buffet have any protein on today?

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 19:53

Doesn't mean you will stay that way hedgehog

HercShipwright · 20/07/2014 19:54

But if you admit that you were greedy (although I still maintain the likely problem was the pudding banditry rather than the quantum of food taken) then how can you say they were wrong for judging you. They may have been wrong to comment audibly. But if you were wrong, they were entitled to note that.

And you were clearly wrong. About the puddings if nothing else.

Littleturkish · 20/07/2014 19:55

I think those people were terribly rude. You clearly aren't overweight, wanted to eat out of hunger- not greed (as would be true of a larger person) and if it was a large hotel buffet it makes no difference how much you took, as the hotel would plan for big eaters anyway.

For what it's worth, I've had my plate commented on at a buffet- "it's not fair how some people can eat all that and not put on weight" by a total stranger. I was in my second month of recovery after a period of severe restriction due to an ED. Going to a buffet was hellish for me, and I felt so ashamed for what I had on plate. I just wanted the ground so swallow me up.

I bet they wouldn't have commented if you had been bigger.

HercShipwright · 20/07/2014 19:56

wait I was at an Indian buffet once! and the man in front of me in the queue picked up the plate of pappadams and walked off with it. The whole plate. Must have been 10 of them on there and they were full sized not mini ones.

I noticed that.

Luckily so did the staff and they brought me over a nice fresh one to my table a few minutes later. Possibly because they saw me silently weeping into my Dahl.

Goldenyellow · 20/07/2014 19:57

You clearly aren't overweight

It is ok for slim people to pile up but not overweight people Hmm

MilkandCereal · 20/07/2014 19:58

I'd have both pasta and potato salad if I wanted. We're not all low carbing.

BellaVita · 20/07/2014 19:59

I don't low carb either but I would put two types of carbs on my plate.

TheFairyCaravan · 20/07/2014 20:00

You clearly aren't overweight, wanted to eat out of hunger- not greed (as would be true of a larger person)

Shock Shock Hmm.

Fucking Hell, turkish did you mean to be so rude?

Thin people can be greedy too!

MilkandCereal · 20/07/2014 20:02

I would.Grin I like carbs,although I'd probably have a small amount of each.

What's your opinion on Yorkshire pudding, and roast potatoes together?

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:02

There wasn't actually much protein at all. Despite the fact that I now realise I was wrong to take so much (in one go) I do think they were wrong to stare and make a comment. I would not have commented on what other people were eating whether I thought it was a lot or not.

I don't understand how you could know you could eat that much in advance? I mean if I'm Hungry I will start lunch say some soup and croutons, then if still hungry would get a salad. If I was then still hungry I would order more food, but if not I would stop there. How did you know you could eat that quantity before you even started?

How did you know the creme brûlée was even nice? Why get four if the first one was horrid, as you would have to eat 3 more!

MilkandCereal · 20/07/2014 20:04

Creme brûlée is always nice. I've yet to meet one that I didn't enjoy.

Littleturkish · 20/07/2014 20:04

fairy I have deeply wrong ideas about food and size- I really shouldn't have read or commented on this- I'm really in no position to offer an opinion. Apologies.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/07/2014 20:04

LittleTurkish slim people can be greedyShock

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:04

I probably will stay this size, assuming I'm the same as my dsis, DM, aunty, cousins and grandparents and tbh day in day out I'm not exceeding the daily recommended calorie intake and am active.

OP posts:
MilkandCereal · 20/07/2014 20:04

But I do see your point.

BOFster · 20/07/2014 20:05

You wouldn't meet many at that buffet- not after the OP had been...

BellaVita · 20/07/2014 20:05

Milk, I wouldn't have both Grin. I rarely have potatoes.

Edenviolet · 20/07/2014 20:06

I knew I could eat that much as have always had a big appetite. Really though its not the point now and I feel this is concluded. I've learnt I should make a few trips rather than one.

OP posts:
MilkandCereal · 20/07/2014 20:06

That's my only reservation about what the OP did. That considerable quantities of food may have gone to waste, but she has said that she'll do things differently next time.

Banderwassnatched · 20/07/2014 20:06

Dumbfounded at the various weight comments. I could way a zillion stone- you'd still have no place telling me how much I can or should eat, so bog off.

You're not meant to fill up more than one plate at a time- it always raises eyebrows (even when I have, say, my plate and my 5-y-os to fill, the double plateage raises eyebrows), but for the life of me- I can't see why it matters. I suppose you're more likely to drop additional plates, and make a mess.

DumDumDeeDay · 20/07/2014 20:06

Och do you no what op if you were hungry and fancied what you had good for you wtf has it got to do with anyone else what you eat!

The only part to me that seems a good bit is six slices of bread but I'm sure I could easily manage that list.

Who knew there was an acceptable amount of food you can eat that's to be determined by busy bodies
