About school holidays. In real life and here.

The clue is in the title "stay at home mum"

Surely the main reason you are a sahm is to mind your children. You're hardly minding them when they are in school.

If you dread the school holidays, get a job!

That's a bit harsh, you don't know what anybody else is going through.

I don't understand that dreading the holidays point of view myself, I always loved the holidays and miss them now DCs are grown up but I know life is not always easy for some people so YABU

It does get a bit much.... People really do seem to be afraid of their own children!

I don't think it is harsh - SAHM suggests hands on, full time child care - at least that is what SAHMs criticised me for not giving as a WOHM (although I am a teacher, so holidays were always covered anyway. SAHM suggests someone happy to spend as many hours as possible with children, otherwise what's the point? I'd have thought holidays were the high point of a SAHMs year.

Ds isn't even at school yet, I'm a a SAHM and I still moan about school holidays! Mainly because all the toddler classes stop as well and cricket 6 weeks feels like a long time to fill!

I'd love to get a job, it would make a lot of things in our life much easier. I am too unwell to work!

It's the same surely as wohm moaning about missing things or going to work surely? It's a job, you know what you signed up for etc etc. some people don't purely choose to stay at home because they feel it's the best for their children. My DH is a SAHP largely due to the fact we couldn't afford childcare that fitted our requirements.

We all have a little moan now and then it's cathartic.

I also agree I don't understand how people can dread the holidays.

Oh and get a job? Now that's properly helpful for all the people struggling to find (appropriate) work.

YABU. Working people (parents or not) often have a moan about their jobs. I'm sure SAHPs love their role but they're more than entitled to a moan too!

I don't understand why any parent moans about the holidays, just plan nice things to do and enjoy your child's company.

Why do people have children if they don't want to spend time with them?

Well, although I do see your point, as a working Mum. It is not always easy for SAHM who have to find things to do to entertain the DC every day - especially, these days when there is such an expectation about what the little darlings should be doing. My brother and I were lucky in one sense because both of our parents were teachers, because they were there for the summer hols and we had loads of different adventures, camping and so on. However, we are both now in a situation where one/both parent is working through the summer (ok, I know DH, DD and I spend a month in Sweden each year - but the summer is often my DB's most busy time so I'm really talking about him).

Some families can't afford lots of days out.

Some families can't afford holidays.

It is unreasonable to assume to children are not demanding and unappreciative of the efforts of even the best parent....it's not their fault, they don't understand.

Everyone wants to do the best for their children....but there are constraints and this holiday is the one that really shows the divisions.

Probably not making sense, but hopefully some of you will know what I mean!

Meh workers whinge about going to work on a Monday morning or on a lovely sunny day. Just because you choose to do something doesn't mean you love it all the time. Sometimes it's great and fun and you wouldn't do anything else and sometimes it's hard work, dull and down right fucking, tip you over the edge awful.

Well you can't say "oh do fuck off OP" but you could say "I think people who slate sahm's for finding school holidays hard should fuck off" I think that's acceptable to the guidelines Walter.

I love school holidays btw.....weeks of unstressed and happy children who don't have to be forced out of bed at OMG O'clock in the morning
