To eat the 'wrong' way round

Wishfulmakeupping · 17/07/2014 15:59

I use my cutlery the wrong way round when eating- would you notice? Would you judge me?
Should I at the age of 32 just learn to eat the right way round?!

OP posts:
SmallBee · 17/07/2014 16:40

I also thought you meant pudding first. Or breakfast for dinner.(Brinner) This isn't as exciting.
I think if someone judges you on this then they've probably judged you on other things as well. I'd ignore. you probably have bigger things to worry about. (Even if they don't!)

han3459 · 17/07/2014 16:42

Couldn't care less which way round :)

LongTimeLurking · 17/07/2014 16:49

Will anybody admit to using a spoon whilst eating the main course?

spence24 · 17/07/2014 16:51

I'm a leftie, but use my cutlery the "correct" way, despite family assuming for years that I must do it the "wrong" way because I'm backwards.

My brother is right-handed, but uses cutlery the "wrong" way - he's 26 and no-one cares as long as he's not eating out of a trough with his face does it really matter?

AMumInScotland · 17/07/2014 16:55

Someone has resurrected a thread from 2012 over in Etiquette. That's what I was referring to.

Choccyhobnob · 17/07/2014 17:02

I'd notice and it bothers me but I won't call people out on it! DH does it but I've accepted he's not going to change now at the age of 32! lol

BananaBumps · 17/07/2014 17:16

I'd not notice. Who on earth cares? In what moment of utter madness was a 'right' and a 'wrong' side to hold cutlery ever thought of?

Flipflops7 · 17/07/2014 18:11

I thought you meant pudding first too and was about to endorse :)

Mind you I also like to hold the fork in my right hand and do this at home, a l'americain :)

LineRunner · 17/07/2014 18:14

I would notice.

Oh yes. Oh fucking yes.

Idontseeanyicegiants · 17/07/2014 18:20

DS did eat left handed for years and then suddenly within 24 hours (and apparently no prompting from anyone) switched to right handed. He still does every else as a leftie though . He got judged by a certain type of arsehole person, and as his parents we got it as well. In fact when he was younger a member if my IL's actually removed cutlery and pens from the 'wrong ' hand and put into the 'right' one.
I consistently moved the item back again and threw a few paddington stares around, it didn't happen very often...

HillyHolbrook · 17/07/2014 18:23

I eat left, unless I'm eating really close beside someone as I don't like knocking elbows, and in this case I'll eat 'American' so I don't spend as much time cutting food and can keep my arms tucked in. My Stepdad used to kick off at me for it and tell me to eat 'properly' but I can't, it feels unnatural and I can't use my knife properly in the other hand. Nobody else has judged me for it, that I know of!Grin

WallyBantersJunkBox · 17/07/2014 18:24

I thought it was pudding first too. And soup last.

JamsetjeeBomanjee · 17/07/2014 18:26

Oh dear, I'm nearly 50 and I didn't realise this was a 'thing' let alone a bad thing. Maybe everyone I know has been too polite to mention it to me.

I'm not sure I care though.

ArgyMargy · 17/07/2014 18:28

I wouldn't judge you I would just assume you were left handed. However if you hold your knife like a pencil I will certainly judge you. Grin

effinandjeffin · 17/07/2014 18:32

My fil, dh and ds all eat the 'wrong' way round. I've tried correcting ds, not because of etiqutte but just because i thought it may be easier for him to master the cutlery eventually, but it doesn't feel comfortable for him.

I'm amazed and appalled that someone may be judging him and by extension me for it. So long as he isn't finging the fucking food around and shovelling into his mouth with his hands who gives a shiny shite?

effinandjeffin · 17/07/2014 18:33

Flinging not finging obvs

CarbeDiem · 17/07/2014 18:34

YWBU according to my dm - it's a pet hate of hers and I drive her mad when I eat in her presence and get told to eat properly and not the wrong way round.
I don't indulge her, I eat how I want and how I'm comfortable.
I wouldn't really notice others as I don't really give a frig tbh.

Longtime
I've been known to request a spoon to assist with my spaghetti when eating Italian food. I make a huge mess trying to get from plate to mouth without twirling first :)
Does that count?

JamsetjeeBomanjee · 17/07/2014 18:34

.

I judge if you hold your fork like this.

To eat the 'wrong' way round
icanmakeyouicecream · 17/07/2014 18:39

How could you eat the wrong way round? Bit confused!

BikeRunSki · 17/07/2014 18:40

I do too. My mum hates it, but no one else noticed or comments.

hollyisalovelyname · 17/07/2014 18:44

I thought you meant having your pudding/ desert first. Then your main course and then your starter. Smile
I'd like it that way- I might never have a starter again! Too full from
pudding and main course.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 17/07/2014 18:47

Soup sales would definitely decline.

No one would just "squeeze in a soup" or "split a bowl of soup" just for the taste.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 17/07/2014 18:48

As long as you don't hold your knife like a pen it's fine by me.

SignYourName · 17/07/2014 19:02

I wouldn't judge you I would just assume you were left handed

^^This.

RevoltingPeasant · 17/07/2014 19:04

I grew up in the US and do the left hand fork, right hand knife, switcheroo.

Tbh when people judge about stuff like this, it mostly makes me think they are pretty provincial. There are subtly different etiquettes (like the US/ UK difference) and unless someone is actively uncouth, chewing with their mouth open etc, there is no reason to worry about their manners.

Real politeness is about putting people at their ease and entering into the spirit of a conversation or event. If you are sitting there with a catsbum face judging away I don't see how that is any better manners than holding your fork "wrong" - in fact, considerably worse. No real lady or gentleman would ever sneer at someone for how they held their knife.
