AIBU about changing my sheets?

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 19:41

I had a conversation at work this week with a few of my colleagues about how often we change out bedding. I and several of my friends say they should be changed once a week, once a fortnight at least. But a couple of my younger colleagues (I'm talking 28, so not teenagers!) said they change theirs every couple of months to every four or five months. Ditto their towels because "they are clean when they get out of the shower". Were we unreasonable to a) practically boak and b) tell them they're old enough to know better, in no uncertain terms? Should we have held our peace instead of hoiking our judgey pants sky high?

Yuck! I was ours at the very least once a fortnight, often weekly. I remember telling a mate off in uni because he only washed them every term (boak)

CoffeeTea103 · 16/07/2014 19:44

Yanbu, that's revolting. I change bedding once a week, towels every second day. Being young isn't an excuse for being dirty.

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 19:44

I had friends at uni who washed their towels once a term, which I remember at the time thinking was foul, but at least they had the excuse of being 18 and being away from home for the first time!

I'm younger than your colleagues and this post has made me feel a bit sick. Get them told.

DiaDuit · 16/07/2014 19:50

You're right. They're grim.

Although you'll get a load of mingera coming on to tell you they havent washed a sheet since 1979 and are still alive so that's ok Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 16/07/2014 19:52

sheets once a week towels... depends on how many people are using it, every few days when the weather is good for drying, everyday if its hot and sunny and good for drying. as long as they don't smell and are not all damp when you need them then i don't worry as mostly they are used by someone straight out of the bath / shower so, ermmm clean?

Yes.

Waltonswatcher · 16/07/2014 19:56

It's a question I've always wanted to ask but daren't - somebody has to answer first !
We are once a week in summer and once every two in winter . For bedding that is .
And I thought we were at risk of looking dirty !

Bogeyface · 16/07/2014 19:58

As I do an average of 3 loads a day, towels often get chucked in with a dark wash to make the load up, so I am not sure exactly how often they get done, but at least twice a week.

Sheets get done when I remember, so at least once a week for the kids and often less for us because I go to bed and think "Oh bollocks, I meant to do the sheets" and then when I do wash them I go to bed and think "Oh bollocks, I stripped the bed" because I stripped it, didnt remake it straight away and promptly forgot about it until bed time. I dont think I have ever remade the bed in daylight :o

DoJo · 16/07/2014 19:58

Unless they are asking you to stay in said manky sheets, then I can't see why you would feel it appropriate to tell them anything about the frequency with which they change their sheets. I am unaware of any bed sheet borne illnesses that they are likely to transmit to you, and the environmental benefits of doing less washing are undeniable. Does it really matter how often a bed that you will probably never see has its sheets changed?

FWIW I am somewhere in between fortnightly and every couple of months for sheets, although more frequently for towels, and have never been subject to any side-effects except lower blood pressure from not having to wrestle with the bloody things more frequently Grin. I was actually complimented recently on the cleanliness of my mattress when I had to send it back after about 8 months due to a fault, so it's clearly not causing any issues. If you like the feeling of fresh sheets, then I can understand the urge to change them more often, but I simply don't care enough to bother.

Sheets weekly in summer , fortnightly winter, towels daily. The latter gets sopping wet and starts to smell musty otherwise

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 20:01

Ha, Bogeyface! I used to be like that, forgetting every night. But now I've noticed I get spots if I don't change my pillow cases at least once a week so I have to be really strict about it. I try to do them on Wednesday because its my work from home day so I can get loads of washing done and dried outside in summer.

I think it depends whether you sleep naked or in pjs.

Plus your level of sweatiness etc

gamerchick · 16/07/2014 20:02

Never mind young uns IRL there's some right manky buggers on here who will come on and tell you the lengths they will go for mingness Grin

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 20:04

DoJo to be honest, I might have just said nothing and been disgusted in private but I was so shocked that I couldn't keep the horror off my face, and then they got defensive by saying they were still too young to care about things like bedding, so I couldn't restrain myself.

My last housemate didn't change his sheets for the whole six months we lived together, and I didn't say a word. And the previous one only had one set, so she dried them in winter on the bathroom radiator, with bits dragging on the floor right by the toilet. Again, boak... But I didn't say a word.

I have never had a conversation with my work colleagues about our laundry habits.

I'm older than your colleagues and from your username I'm guessing that I'm also older than you.

TheLovelyBoots · 16/07/2014 20:04

Jesus Christ. I cannot believe that anyone would go 4 or 5 months without washing their sheets. That is really... just... ugh.

expatinscotland · 16/07/2014 20:06

YUK.

YANBU.

Once a week on all sheets and pillow and mattress protectors.

Once a month, Hoover and turn the mattress. Steam clean mattress and wash pillows every other month. Duvets, too.

Hand towel changed daily.

TalisaMaegyr · 16/07/2014 20:06

Obfus you just made me LOL Grin

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 20:06

And I don't think you will get diseases from them... But there's lots of things that don't give you diseases that are pretty gross. Wearing the same underwear several days in a row is unlikely to cause issues most of the time but it's still pretty disgusting.

drudgetrudy · 16/07/2014 20:07

Oh well-they're making me feel better about my once a fortnight and I don't suppose they'll come to any harm over it.

TalisaMaegyr · 16/07/2014 20:07

Have any of you lot actually got JOBS? Washing towels daily?! FFS!

CarmineRose1978 · 16/07/2014 20:08

limitedperiod there is no such thing as TMI in our office. It's not for everyone!
