AIBU about changing my sheets?

I had a conversation at work this week with a few of my colleagues about how often we change out bedding. I and several of my friends say they should be changed once a week, once a fortnight at least. But a couple of my younger colleagues (I'm talking 28, so not teenagers!) said they change theirs every couple of months to every four or five months. Ditto their towels because "they are clean when they get out of the shower". Were we unreasonable to a) practically boak and b) tell them they're old enough to know better, in no uncertain terms? Should we have held our peace instead of hoiking our judgey pants sky high?

Closer to home, increased power consumption means more power stations being built.

Hands up everyone who wants a nuclear power station in their town, please!

Oh please, it is nothing to do with dirty sheets.

How can anyone use the same towel twice? I dislike the thought of drying my arse with the towel and then using the very same towel to dry my face next time around. Disgusting, and no matter how well aired the bathroom is they always dry out musty and lose that soft fluffy feeling.

I do like a good bleet about the environment from those who have no problem being ferried by a car.

ObfusKate, I loved your comment! It reminded me of this lady.

I practically want to wash mine every day when the weather's nice, I love crisp, line-dried, ironed sheets.

At least fortnightly, usually weekly. I only iron our bedding, and I'm another that forgets to re-make it till bedtime.

TheRainDrops · 16/07/2014 21:29

I change sheets every two weeks and towels when I remember, which is not often by the rest of your standards! Grin
When they start to smell a bit musty, in the wash they go. Sometimes that's after a week, sometimes two, sometimes longer!
Unlike longtimelurking I give my arse a jolly good scrub in the shower, and I use a separate towel for my face, so not really that worried about arse to face contamination.
Life's too short for laundry every bloody day!

whois · 16/07/2014 21:31

SEVERAL MONTHS?!?!? I thought I was at the 'gross' end of the scale with every 2 weeks occasionally slipping to 3 weeks.

My arse is lovely and clean when I come out of the shower. You could eat your dinner off it ;-) So I don't mind using my towel more than once.

These threads are my favourites Grin they always descend into anarchy!

FWIW, I think about 6 weeks is my limit. For sheets and towels. Once they start smelling I know they need washing Grin

Shock Fancy drying with just one towel! Shock Doesn't everyone have a body towel and a head towel?

Sallystyle · 16/07/2014 21:37

I am closer to 3-4 weeks here. It actually just dawned on me that it is time to change them again tomorrow. I mean to do them more often but often I forget.

It just isn't big on my priority list I guess. We don't smell so I guess it is all good.

Towels are washed once they are wet or smell, so I probably use them twice on average. My children also have an awful habit of managing to put them on the floor and wet them so when that happens then go straight in the wash as they are too wet to dry without smelling.

MsVestibule · 16/07/2014 21:56

The trouble is with this sort of 'survey' is that they're self selecting. With a couple of exceptions ^^, slatterns like me are too scared to risk the ridicule of other MNers, so don't contribute. So I'll be honest:

Sheets - once a month. And DH and I don't wear anything in bed.
Towels - when they start to smell (roughly every 2 weeks)
My body - not daily
My hair - every 4 days
My one (quite expensive) bra - even I won't admit to this Wink.

IckleBird · 16/07/2014 22:03

2-4 weeks for bed sheets and immediately after sex.
Towels get used for 2-3 days depends how wet they are if sodding then in the wash they go otherwise air them dry outside if possible.

DangerRabbit · 16/07/2014 22:15

Try to do it every week, usually ends up once a fortnight.

When my friend first got together with her now ex-boyfriend, he told her that he had not changed the sheets since he had split up with his former ex....1.5 years previously!!

Do I win the thread?!

MsVestibule · 16/07/2014 22:16

icklebird you actually get up after sex and change the sheets? Shock

At what point do you bathe in the afterglow?? Before or after jumping out of bed, stripping the bed, getting new bedding out of the cupboard and putting it on the bed?

Purpleroxy · 16/07/2014 22:18

Depends. I have bath/shower in evening and sleep in pjs. So sheets don't get dirty quickly. Once a week in that situation is a complete waste of washing.

MsVestibule · 16/07/2014 22:18

Dangerrabit even I would draw the line at 1.5 years!!!

Purpleroxy · 16/07/2014 22:19

Icklebird have sex on a towel, much easier to wash!

DoJo · 16/07/2014 22:19

IckleBird
Do you mean whilst everyone's still getting their breath back? How do you have the energy? Grin

DangerRabbit · 16/07/2014 22:22

MsVestubule yes...and he only changed his sheets because my friend insisted! He couldn't understand the need to do so, even after a year and a half!

He also had one bath towel he never washed that had a black body-shaped stain on it...hmm, wonder why my friend ever split up with him!

Ledkr · 16/07/2014 22:26

When I was single I often left mine for ages because is shower before bed and wore pjs plus my bed never saw any "action" it was one of the perks of being divorced
I have to be more vigilant now I'm remarried Grin

thegreylady · 16/07/2014 22:29

Sheets and pillowcases go two weeks in Winter and one in Summer. Towels are changed every couple of days. Duvet covers less frequently changed than sheets but at least every 3/4 weeks.

Towels are done after every use, sheets and covers as and when it's needed.

Bumpandkind · 16/07/2014 22:43

Haha, I'll give you all something to boak and hitch up your judgy pants about.... Three in a bed, breast milk, sweat, and when we can elbow the wee one out of the room some erm other fluids too.

I change the sheets when it smells too earthy. Sometimes a month.

Yes, I'm not so much with the cleanliness!
