to think it's the blow dry that makes us fork out for a haircut?

I just cut my own hair. Really couldn't be bothered to spend 30 odd quid paying for something I can do myself. It looks good... apart from not being blow dried to perfection like it is when you leave the salon. It made me think that if I learned to blow dry it really nicely myself then I wouldn't be depriving myself of anything by DIY.

What do you lot think?

Oh holy god no, I could not cut my own hair Shock

My hairdresser is fab - I go for a cut and colour every 8 weeks and she keeps it looking great.

If you don't want a blow dry tell them!!!

Almostfifty · 16/07/2014 16:26

I prefer to have it cut and dried so my hairdresser can just check it over again. Sometimes it needs a tad more off the front, and that can't be seen when it's wet.

It looks much better when I blow dry it myself though.

BornToFolk · 16/07/2014 16:33

Another curly here! I've had some horrific blow dries in the past (ie. hairdressers actually combing it while they dry it, which turns it into a big frizzy mess) but recently started asking for a wet cut. It's so much better. I pay about 15 less and they usually stick me under the heater-thingy for a bit anyway as they seem to feel a bit guilty about sending me out with wet hair - win/win!

UnrelatedToElephants · 16/07/2014 16:34

It totally is the blow dry, I agree. But there's no way I could do the cut bit either! I go to GNVQ 3 trainees which makes the price less painful!

By the way, a pARked cAR is stationARy - it helps me.

Joysmum · 16/07/2014 16:38

I prefer the way I finish my hair so your musings aren't applicable to me.

doobledootch · 16/07/2014 16:38

If I cut my own hair not having it blow dried would be the least of my worries.

firesidechat · 16/07/2014 17:41

I think that there is no way that I could cut my own hair. I can only imagine the car crash that would result from that.

I always refuse the blow dry. I don't even blow dry my own hair.

ithoughtofitfirst · 16/07/2014 17:44

Nice one unrelated I will remember that !

I saw a place the the other day that only did blow dries. No cutting or colouring - you just went there for them to wash and style your hair. The sign said it cost 'from 15 and it was in a vair naice Yorkshire town

Must be for the elderly who can't wash and dry it themselves

ithoughtofitfirst · 16/07/2014 17:51

I'm really surprised that some people really don't like the blow dry !! Seems to be a hair texture thing so i can understand. Curly hair should be left to do it's thaaang

It looked a bit trendy for the shampoo and set brigade Lilac, but that's a good point about less mobile people.

I must be unusual in that I don't see hairdressing as a treat, but a necessary evil, a bit like going to the dentist. I don't go unless I absolutely have to (2 or 3 times a year at most).

thecuntureshow · 16/07/2014 18:27

I went to one of those blow dry places - they put my hair up and it looked amazing. It was a sort of Bridget Bardot chignon. Went before a wedding. Definitely not for those that cut their own hair Wink

ithoughtofitfirst · 16/07/2014 18:31

Ah but see thecunt I could cut it the way I like it and have someone else make it all bouffy!

cardibach · 16/07/2014 18:42

YABU - or at least, U in suggesting that what you believe is right for everyone. I have very short hair and if it is cut brilliantly it looks good with my substandard drying or, at a push, being left to dry naturally. A bad cut may look good when blow dried but I can't recreate it myself. The cut is the key - I prefer my own blow drying, actually, but about half my cut is done after it is dried, so I let her get on with it!

NapoleonsNose · 16/07/2014 18:56

Where are these salons that only charge £10-£15 for a wet cut? Where I go it's £23 and then I always leave £2 tip. I think a cut and blow dry is about £36 now which is partly why I never have it done.

ithoughtofitfirst · 16/07/2014 19:00

Ah yes cardibach the crafty blow dry that disguises a bad cut. Good point!

itsbetterthanabox · 16/07/2014 19:26

Napoleons. Supercuts is a chain where a simply cut us very cheap.
Or you can usually get cheaper cuts if you go for the cheaper stylist.
I go to a really nice place but a wash, cut and style is only £25 because I have the graduate stylist. She is just as good (actually I think better!) but much cheaper than the other stylists.

MIL goes to get her hair washed and set. It used to be the done thing.

I buy my stationERy from a stationer's shop, btw :o (Or Sainsbury's, but that doesn't help me to spell it)

Purplepoodle · 16/07/2014 19:43

No I adore my hairdressers and she makes my hair look fab. She's not really into blow drying but her cuts tend to be so amazing she doesn't need to blow dry to get it to sit

DoJo · 16/07/2014 19:49

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat

I'm with you although I have just realised that I can only remember having my hair cut once since my son was born, which was over two years ago. Hmmm, maybe it is time to book myself in for a wet cut and no blow dry again!

littlejohnnydory · 17/07/2014 12:10

I've got straight hair and I hate the blow dry, I used to always wash my hair again the moment I got home - until I realised I could ask for a dry cut, which is much cheaper too.

ithoughtofitfirst · 17/07/2014 12:48

I never understand why the wap the straighteners over mine after doing a lush blow dry. Why would you put all that bouff in and then make it look like Morticia Adams? I can do that myself.

OP posts:
SuperFlyHigh · 17/07/2014 21:03

Ithought the last time they used straighteners on me I was confused too. next time they used curlers do a glam look. I think these hairdressers (my salon) go in for trends and it's whatever is trendy at the time they think you'll like, eg straightened or Colleen Rooney rollers!

TheLovelyBoots · 17/07/2014 21:11

Every time I get a professional blow dry (i.e. hair cut), I just go home, wet it, and re-dry it myself.

My Turkish friend once told me (after we had gotten a blow out on holiday) that I looked like a cow had licked my head. This is, I guess, a common Turkish turn of phrase.
