to think it's the blow dry that makes us fork out for a haircut?

I just cut my own hair. Really couldn't be bothered to spend 30 odd quid paying for something I can do myself. It looks good... apart from not being blow dried to perfection like it is when you leave the salon. It made me think that if I learned to blow dry it really nicely myself then I wouldn't be depriving myself of anything by DIY.

What do you lot think?

an amazing blow-dry? well one that uses brushes is best on my hair (fine and lots of it, long).

but when they rough dry it... a waste of time.

I do sometimes like when they do a blow-dry it with rollers etc as that does look good and very glam. But can I be bothered to faff around every day with that? Nope.

DiaDuit · 16/07/2014 14:00

Well it kind of depends what style/type of hair you have. If you're just doing a bung it in a bobble and cut on straight hair then you can get away with a 'layered' look but if you have a short bob then you'll need an expert to maintain it. In fact, even with layered hair you can tell what has been done at home and what has been done professionally. I used to do my own but i much prefer the finish when it's done properly.

Fwiw i'd happily walk out of the salon with wet hair as long as the cut is good. I'm not bothered about a blow dry.

SillyTillyTilly · 16/07/2014 14:01

I'd love to trim my own hair (below shoulder length) but can't even cut a straight line in paper!

ChoccaDoobie · 16/07/2014 14:26

Agree with the first response. My curly hair has seen some horrendous blow dries! I avoid them unless it's my very favourite hairdresser.

runningonwillpower · 16/07/2014 14:30

I hate the blow dry.

I didn't go in to the hairdresser's looking like that so why would she think I'd want to leave looking like that? If I wanted a poncey half-fringe effect I'd have one!

It's a quick run to the car and hope I don't meet anyone I know.

I am the person who leaves the hairdressers with their hair wet - I also turn up with it wet as I can't stand having someone else wash it. In an ideal world, I have a wet cot which takes about 15 minutes and I am not forced to look at myself in a mirror the whole time (this last hasn't happened yet!). I don't own a hair-dryer and I don't want anyone else to turn me into a dandelion by using on on my weirdly fine, baby-like hair! To those who hate it - why have it done?!

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 16/07/2014 14:57

YY *DoJo. I am a bit Shock at the madness of people paying for a blow dry that they immediately go home and undo by rewashing Confused.

Some people must like blow dries though. I saw a place the the other day that only did blow dries. No cutting or colouring - you just went there for them to wash and style your hair. The sign said it cost 'from 15 and it was in a vair naice Yorkshire town.

SwedishEdith · 16/07/2014 14:57

I have seen people leave with wet hair. I am very envious of anyone who can let their hair dry naturally and it look Ok. I tried this the other week - washed it at 3 in the afternoon, put it in a ponytail so it didn't frizz out, went to the pub and sat outside, moved the bobble around a few times and it was still not dry at 01.00. I love the blow dry

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 15:01

I agree with the original poster. I always get my colours and cuts done at separate appointments so I can get more blowdries (I know it's more expensive but I just love the whole salon experience).

Occasionally I get a blowdry by itself too although it can be difficult to do on the spur of the moment as my salon is always so busy.

thecuntureshow · 16/07/2014 15:06

I think I could get away with trimming my split ends myself if it was long, layered and wavy. But I have a 'style' and have no idea how I would cut it at the back and make it look good so it was groomed and polished when dry.

I'm interested in a better hairdryer though. Which Parlux is good?

DoJo · 16/07/2014 15:09

I used to work with someone who never washed her own hair. She went to the hairdressers twice a week to have it washed, styled and dried, and literally never got it wet in between. I'm not sure there are two people further apart on the hairdressing spectrum than she and I, but at least I can have a shower/swim/impromptu weekend away without having to schedule it around a hairdresser's appointment!

alltoomuchrightnow · 16/07/2014 15:10

opposite. I like it to dry natural and never blow-dry myself. Too many times I've walked home in wind and rain after a haircut so what's the point. Once cancelled an appointment because they wouldn't do hair without the blow dry, and charged more for it, it wasn't an option, and was pissing down outside, the kind where a brolly would be useless

alltoomuchrightnow · 16/07/2014 15:11

my hair is fairly straight and dries fairly straight, so it not a problem

Thumbwitch · 16/07/2014 15:11

Far from it. I never blow dry my hair, and I never get it blow dried at the hairdressers either, unless my hair is being done for a special occasion, such as being my best mate's bridesmaid. Other than that, they're not allowed near it once it's been cut.

I don't even own a hairdryer any more.

ithoughtofitfirst · 16/07/2014 15:13

Thanks travel ! E for envelope. Got it!

alltoomuchrightnow · 16/07/2014 15:16

I've not owned a hairdryer for years. blow dries have always made me look bouffy, only to walk out of hairdressers and go flat again. my hair is fine but lots of it

Tanith · 16/07/2014 15:26

I've cut my own hair for a while now. Then I went to a hairdresser for a birthday treat.

"Who on earth has been at your hair??! wasn't me, was it??"

Umm...

"I would sue, I really would! They've done a terrible job!"

Umm... Blush

"No, really. Tell me."

Blush Blush "me" Blush Blush

Shock ................Shock................Shock

Then she got her breath back.

All through the cut, she kept pausing:
"There! Doesn't that look so much better??"

Um...

I threw out my scissors when I got back home!

goodasitgets · 16/07/2014 15:28

I never have mine dried, I don't even own a hair dryer or brush Grin
Just had a stunning cut (I have curly hair) and she wasn't bothered at all when I asked her to leave it wet

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 16/07/2014 15:29

I guarantee your home haircut looks a lot less good than you think it does.

Icimoi · 16/07/2014 15:34

Current hair dresser does a brilliant sort of layered cut which looks great when he's blow-dried it, but also looks good when I just wash and leave it. Money very well spent imo.

DiaDuit · 16/07/2014 15:41

I had a colleague who used to go to the hairdressers accross the road at lunch to have her hair straightened if she was going out that night after work. It cost £12! £12 to do something that takes a few minutes at home and that was surely going to boing back up into wavy frizz when she had a shower before heading out? Confused

weedonleg · 16/07/2014 16:00

Am also stunned at the people who pay extra for blow dries that they don't want!

You phone up and say 'Please could I book an appointment for a wet cut on next Tuesday'. They write it down in the book, you get there and usually they will just reconfirm that you are wanting a wet cut, but you do sometimes get hairdressers who say at the end 'are you sure you don't want me to blow dry it ' and you simply say 'no, I'm really busy today so I must dash' (works particularly well if you have a small child in tow), and then you pay 10 less when you leave.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 16/07/2014 16:07

Or you could say 'I'm going running/swimming/to the gym later today, so it'll get ruined anyway' as a reason for rejecting a blow dry?

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 16:14

DiaDuit, I am like your colleague. Blush I have straight hair so get a blowdry rather than straightening. (Also my nights out are super rare! I get my hair done for a pick-me-up). I just love being pampered and feel like being able to pay for little treats like blowdries are part of the reason I go to work everyday. In other areas I try to save money as I really love going to the salon and it boosts my happiness and self-confidence so I think it's worth the money (occasionally!)
