I know it's not technically aibu.

Mine has to be a deep fried mars bar, so sickly but so nice.

DH buys exotic meat sometimes so we have these things on a fairly regular basis:
Springbok, crocodile, kangaroo, camel.

I am pregnant so have gone off them all! More for him Grin

Whale in Iceland. Very nice actually, like very tender beef. The ethics of it are difficult - when you look at it through the eyes of Icelanders when it is a traditional food . Minkes aren't endangered.

I like tripe with vinegar and salt /pepper. Not had for years.

In France we try to find the eateries in rural villages where you have a cheap fixed price, fixed menu with little choice ( designed for locals). We have had some lovely food, though not necessarily easy to know exactly what. However pigs trotters were cold and gelatinous, and tête de veau ( which I foolishly thought might be like brawn ) was inedible.

Best, yummiest " near disaster" was a wet late lunch dash into a restaurant in albi with starving primary age kids. Got the last table in the only cheapish place open to find it specialised in offal! Dh and I had some great liver, the kids had the only other thing left - stewed ducks hearts in red wine . Which was actually really tasty .... And they ate it all! " yes dear it's bits of duck, sort of stew yknow" . Possibly didn't tell thrm the truth till a while later!

Ugali... Never had it but a friend is in Kenya at the moment. She says it's like play dough in texture and taste!

bamboo nose to tail eating respects the whole animal. Why not eat the intestine?

Weirdest non-animal - stinky fermented tofu covered in chili. Not that weird.

I ate ugali while on an expedition in the hills of Tanzania with school kids. Ugali is made from maize flour with water and was served with kidney beans - the ugali was used like a little grabber to pick up the beans.

Our kids were obsessed with talking about food and what they were missing so asked the local children what their favourite food was - every single one said ugali because it made them big and strong. Adults have the same answer.

It made our kids pause for thought for a while.

It's sad to read of the 'delicacies' people have eaten but haven't made any reference to the ethical implications of that choice.

Ortolan, seriously? The poor bird is fed in a dark box which causes it to eat continuously and then it's drowned in cognac.

Foie gras?
Whale?
Shark?

I might have a little cry.

Rat on a stick when I lived in Malawi. The villagers would bring them as gifts.

Hmmm...some of the weirdest things I have eaten are nice, some not!

Shark fin soup - delicious, but I wouldn't eat it again since my brother explained what they do with the rest if the shark :(

Chicken feet - nice, we have this regularly when we have dim sum

Starfish - bought from a street food market in Beijing, vile, tasted of sand and I will never see a starfish as something pretty again!

Duck tongue - horrible, tried it and feel awful when I feed ducks at the park.

Frogs legs - taste okay but not enough meat to make it worth the hassle of getting the meat off the legs!

Snails - I tried these once and they were very chewy and hard to swallow. Wouldn't eat them again.

Fried scorpion on a stick - again from a Beijing street food market. Actually very crunch and salty, quite tasty!

Oyster - not nice IMHO although I know some people love them. Cold and salty.

Jellyfish - eaten with chicken and noodles, enjoyed this.

Eel - okay, ate it steamed with black bean sauce, didn't like the bones though.

Squid, mussles etc. are all pretty 'normal' aren't they? I like squid, not keen on mussles although I will eat them.

And I forgot tripe, it tasted nice until I realised what it was!

Also eaten chicken hearts, they were very tasty.

I like black pudding as well - I blame my dad for that!

I agree with molly in that eating animals is one thing.
Eating animals that died a slow death and were mistreated is another thing.

Kangaroo is ok. Not as nice as steak but quite nice.
Buffalo is pretty much the same.
Ostrich I've eaten.
Warthog pate - v nice.
I've eaten goat - was lovely. I was going to try camel on holiday but it was over priced so I didn't.
I wouldn't eat durian if my life depended on it. Even the smell of the uncut fruit makes me heave.

I'm with Molly. Would never eat something like shark fin soup. A group of us once walked out of a restaurant when we saw it on the menu.

Stew with cow hide and fresh water snails. Snails the size of my fist. Cow hide basically unchewable bits of leather. The whole thing smelt like something decomposing.

could not bring myself to taste.
