To think putting a baby in a sidecar is not a good idea

Just that really. Next door neighbour has just driven off on old fashioned motorbike with baby in the side car thingy, albeit in a car seat...surely this can't be a good idea?

I thought you meant a sidecar cot and was all ready to defend it! (Looking at sleeping dd2 I one beside me right now) Grin

Um an actual side car I have no idea! I doubt it had side impact protection but if the baby is in a car seat it can't be too bad?

Aliums · 10/07/2014 19:52

Nor do I! I have never seen it done before...to be honest these neighbours aren't the most responsible parents I've ever seen - the baby is only a few weeks old and I have seen the mother in the garden feeding it cake!

Erm no that doesn't sound right!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 10/07/2014 20:10

Is the car seat belted in? I wouldnt do it myself, however I suppose it has similarities to an open topped car?

Id still be Hmm if I saw it though.

Or are you watching Aristocats?

Joysmum · 10/07/2014 20:13

It's fine as long as the child is held in with duct tape Grin

I think it's better than what I saw at the weekend in Portsmouth, on the main ringroads driving to the ferries; mum, on a pushbike with an empty child seat at the back, dad on a pushbike holding on with one arm, the other arm clutching on his lap a baby girl aged around nine months with terrified look on her face. No helmets on any of them. It made me feel sick with anxiety.

SpandexBallet · 11/07/2014 08:07

That's how my dad used to take me to nursery, in his sidecar. I turned out ok!
I say as long as the car seat is in good conditi

SpandexBallet · 11/07/2014 08:08

Sorry posted too soon...fat thumbs

Good condition then what's the problem

VivaLeBeaver · 11/07/2014 08:11

I wouldn't do it.

But then I used to put dd when she was a baby in one of those baby seats on the back of my push bike. I guess its no difference.

A motorbike with a sidecar isn't going to go fast I'd have thought. So the danger is from a car going into the sidecar. The same danger as a car going into a push bike. And I guess as the baby is in a car seat it has more protection than being on the back of a bike or in one of those bike trailers which people use.

I'm sick of bloody babies expecting a free ride all the time. They never buy a round either.

MrsMaturin · 11/07/2014 08:13

I wouldn't do it but that doesn't mean it's unsafe. We saw a German family on holiday in Scotland once with dad on motorbike with the most amazing closed over sidecar attachment containing two little dc and mum on her own bike. We also saw a family of three stopping at Leeming Bar Macdonalds- again mum was on her own bike and boy of about 9 maybe was riding pillion with his dad. Correct helmets and full leathers were being worn by all and off they went at 70 MPH. Personally I couldn't bear it - but they were doing what was normal and not unduly risky in their perception. You can't expect everybody to risk assess in the same way.
