to wear a hat through the airport rather than submit it to the tender mercies of the hold?

I'm going to a wedding soon, and have a dress and hat ready. However, I'm flying there.

I don't want to risk squashing the hat in my hand luggage, and I think a hat box would be too big as a cabin bag. I'm not keen on the idea of putting a hat box in the hold though, I've seen how bags can get thrown around! Also, doing it without any hold luggage would be good -everything else I'm taking will fit in a cabin sized bag.

WIBU (or possibly mad...) to wear the hat through the airport, and just put it on my knee on the flight?

Well, it does make sense. Might look odd, but I am sure the airport bods will have seen funnier.

I wouldn't wear it. I would just carry it in my hand.

It would be an internal flight, so at least I won't get stuck stammering through 'Je porte... un chapeau...p-p-parce que...'

Had exact same thing a few weeks ago. I took my big daft fascinator through in a plastic carrier bag (mainly to protect from weather/spilling anything on it/make it easier to carry), no way it would have fitted in any sort of carry-on or even a normal hatbox. No one even blinked at me carrying on an extra plastic bag (which clearly weighed next to nothing) along with my carry-on, and that was with Easyjet. I was prepared to take it out and wear it if I had to... suspect that people would have been reasonable though once they'd seen that it was a hat and not contraband extra luggage.

Ah, that might be more sensible LWB - I was thinking of the rules with handbags and was thinking I couldn't carry two items on.

You see loads of women, carrying wedding hats and having to wear then, do they aren't classed as hand luggage.

In going to be doing what you suggest, next year because in not going to be cheated out of wearing a hat, just because my DD's getting married "abroad".

We've travelled with all sorts of sport and medical equipment, always makes me wonder why people care what others are travelling with, tbh.

Oh good, I mentioned it to my DM this morning and she said I'd look ridiculous. I'd rather look ridiculous and get it there safely! It's not like I'll see the people on the flight/airport every day and they'll say "she was the one with the hat".

YANBU but do try to remember to take it off on the plane in case it blocks the pilot's view out of the rear view mirror.

I did this the other week on Easyjet. Just carried it and said I'd wear it if there was an issue, there wasn't...!

Get a hat box. Most airlines will let you take a hat box as extra hand luggage.

Don't worry. I've done it and I've also sat on a plane beside someone who did the same thing!
