to not want to listen to someone else's child read

Yes if course I know IABU but it's soooooo annoying. I read with mine because I must (luckily DD1) is past that. I am at swimming with DD2, loads of us in a hot cramped viewing area. But it's quiet and am enjoying half hour peaceful browsing. And next to me is a 8/9 yr old reading to mum (clearly a homework book) in that annoying stilted monotone being corrected every sentence. Painful when it's mine but so much worse when it's not.
Am gritting my teeth. Could it not wait till they get home.

Mintyy · 07/07/2014 16:41

Gosh.

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 16:43

Nope it's chicks, could only go into change rooms even hotter, or outside and it's raining. But may have some earphones in my bag, wonder if Netflix will work....could catch up on warehouse 13:-D

Earphones are the way forward I think. :-)

windchime · 07/07/2014 16:44

Performance Parenting. Makes me grind my teeth too.

phantomnamechanger · 07/07/2014 16:44

YABU and silly it'll be what, 5-10 minutes tops? great use of time for busy families

thornrose · 07/07/2014 16:45

You're browsing, she's taking the opportunity to get her child's homework done. You're in a public place, go sit outside in the sunshine?

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 16:45

Well she's been going for 15 mins solid now with no sign of stopping. Am grinding my teeth.

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 16:46

Sunshine? I'm in Wales it's tipping down.....

OP posts:
thornrose · 07/07/2014 16:46

Whoops, sorry, you have no sunshine.

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 16:46

Actually I know IABU it's still bloody annoying.

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/07/2014 16:48

Have you read the book?

Can you just blurt out "he dies at the end" or something?

kaymondo · 07/07/2014 16:48

Performance parenting? What rubbish - just a busy mum trying to do something productive during swimming which she then won't have to do when she gets home.

Yanbu for finding it irritating but she isn't bu for doing it - another vote for headphones!

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 16:49

Found earphones so now I have Luther vandross :-) if I turn it up I might drown her out for everyone else too :-D

"I read with mine because I must"

What a depressing attitude towards reading...

Gileswithachainsaw · 07/07/2014 17:00

Oh come on, moomin

Don't tell me that biff and fecking chip make you anything other than a wreck rocking in the corner :o

It's not enjoyable at all

Joysmum · 07/07/2014 17:02

I think that mother and child should be applauded in taking the time to do something productive.

If anything, I think you're being unreasonable to not be sufficiently interested to watch your child swim!

MrsBW · 07/07/2014 17:03

Performance Parenting. Makes me grind my teeth too.

Hearing a child read is 'performance parenting' Really???

bigTillyMint · 07/07/2014 17:04

I love hearing children read.

Just as well - I'm a teacherGrin

Vintagejazz · 07/07/2014 17:06

Pick up your own book and start reading it aloud to yourself. They might get the message Smile

YANBU.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/07/2014 17:07

Biff and Chip are absolutely dire, but there's a difference between saying 'I read the magic key books but only because I had to', and 'I read with my children but only because I had to'.

macdoodle · 07/07/2014 17:07

We read, we're all big readers. But we read what we like every night '(matilda currently). The repetetive annoying school readers make me want to rip my own fingernails off.

OP posts:
MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/07/2014 17:08

But the most important point is that Biff and Chip are shit Grin them and their fucking dog!

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 07/07/2014 17:09

Fair enough then mac, I apologise for my assumption :)
