Am I turning into one of those annoying mums? I always remember a v annoying dad doing sit ups during 'Row Row Row Your Boat' at a playgroup I once went to. He definitely was BU...

I sing in 'harmony' at toddler groups... i only know one tune, there are variations, and I am so crap a singer it all goes pearshaped and possibly horribly dischordant

WottaMess · 05/07/2014 09:23

I can't carry a tune in a bucket. God knows how my poor DS thinks twinkle twinkle actually goes... Confused I wouldn't mind this per se but it would mean I didn't stand a chance of ever finding the tune again and so would probably mean I just shut up and did actions. I really try to sing with DS because I know music is beneficial but self conscious really doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about singing in public in the first place Blush.

Thanks Fox but I was only kidding! Well, I AM going to a wedding but it isn't mine!! x

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 05/07/2014 10:11

This thread has made my morning! Well it did until I told DH about it and he reported that I sometimes unintentionally sing harmonies because I'm so out of tune (I am tone deaf so this wasn't meant unkindly Grin )

I'm mortified now - what if I've unwittingly been that mum at toddler group... Shock

Mrsjayy · 05/07/2014 10:17

Oh no please dont you dont need to perform and belt out twinkle twinkle little star like you are beyonce

ComeHeather · 05/07/2014 10:19

oh please please do this! It would be hilarious and I would've have to have left for snorting. which would be great cos I loathe group activities of every kind.

(my mum has sung in the church choir since Adam was a lad and automatically harmonises everything...Corrie theme tune etc just can't help it. I love her to bits but my god it's annoying)

Mrsjayy · 05/07/2014 10:26

Do you do vocal warm ups in the car

Chippednailvarnish · 05/07/2014 10:29

I think you should do it Op, I for one wouldn't be able to stop myself laughing at you.

OutragedFromLeeds · 05/07/2014 10:30

I went to a playgroup where one of the mums did this.

Her face:Grin

Everyone else (including toddlers]: Shock Hmm

It's good she was enjoying herself I suppose.

Quangle · 05/07/2014 10:32

I would love to hear some Mariah Carey style note-bothering in a toddler's group. Preferably with that hand movement she does where she's marking out her notes.

Quangle · 05/07/2014 10:33

Also enough snootiness about English people not approving of enjoyment or talent. This is absolutely the best thing about being English - laughing at reckoners Grin

scottishmummy · 05/07/2014 10:34

How very cringey.belting it out like karaoke queen
Poor weans
Poor adults

YourBrotherInLaw · 05/07/2014 10:35

It is a very British thing op, I'm cringing just reading this. Grin

scottishmummy · 05/07/2014 10:43

It's the brass neck factor.maw belting it out, forgetting it's not her ta-dah moment

WoodliceCollection · 05/07/2014 10:49

Do you live in Marchmont? If so you may as well since every other yummy mummy will be at it. Otherwise, YABU.

scottishmummy · 05/07/2014 10:50

Haha the marchmont massive.used to. I used to Live in marchmont

CustardFromATin · 05/07/2014 10:54

Bee blanket it's not really about slapping down difference, it's about making life trickier for the littlies and other mums - and also making something about the adults when it should be about the kids. If a toddler was singing harmonies, on the other hand, I'd be standing back and applauding (maybe that's what mine are trying to do when they miss the tune completely Wink)

scottishmummy · 05/07/2014 10:55

It's session specifically for toddlers, not over enthusiastic mammy warblers

TheFirstOfHerName · 05/07/2014 11:11

Do you do vocal warm ups in the car

Ha! Yes, but only if my voice is going to be v.exposed (i.e. me, a microphone and a pianist).

If I'm going to be singing in a group then I'm usually too lazy to warm up beforehand.

TheFirstOfHerName · 05/07/2014 11:14

Two of my children have a v.sensitive sense of pitch. DH does not (that's putting it mildly). When they were babies/toddlers, they would start to cry if DH sang to them. Grin

rubybleu · 05/07/2014 13:42

I'm not British and I would be absolutely cringing for you. YABU. Totally inappropriate.

My MIL does this and worse, she hums/sings along to absolutely everything, instrumental and vocal. She is actually a brilliant singer and has sung as a hobby soloist at some impressive venues - but I was thinking very unreasonable thoughts as she sang along wordlessly to every instrumental at Monty Python this week. I did not pay £80 for a ticket to listen to her hum!!

mummymeister · 05/07/2014 13:53

if you love singing the harmonies so much join a local choir. there will be loads where you live, they are everywhere. singing with kids is for them to learn tunes, words, multi tasking actions to singing etc and developing their skills. we had a mum in our musical bumps and babies group. she was actually not that bad. she was asked to leave by the leader which I thought was harsh. still she was the sort of mum who did a couple of weeks training for the mums race in school sports.

RachelWatts · 05/07/2014 13:55

It depends on why you're singing harmonies. If you're singing a descant, it sounds a bit "Listen! I can do high notes! I'm such a great singer!" - particularly if you do vibrato and other twiddly bits.

If, like one of the mums at a music group I went to, you just can't reach the high notes but are a good enough singer to do an alto harmony, then fine.

ForTheBants · 05/07/2014 13:58

I would think you were a total prat. Sorry.

One of the school mums harmonises at the top of her voice at church. Badly.

We all talk about it.
