To not like these 'parking like an idiot' groups

Morethanalittlebitconfused · 03/07/2014 21:37

On Facebook and also twitter are groups and pages dedicated to naming and shaming people for percieved bad driving, no attempt to anonymise the reg plates or faces or anything

They don't sit right with me at all

Before anyone asks no me and my car have not appeared on one of these groups Grin

I kind of like them but they're a bit frustrating since it's just, you know, say a white Corsa or whatever without any indication of who was driving. The only person able to identify the car would be the driver or family/close friend. They'd be funnier/also more pointedly "hey you're an arsehole" if they consisted of pictures of the drivers walking away from the car after having knowingly parked like a c*nt.

Okay, that was kind of garbled but I'm in the US and it's late here and our poor dog is losing her mind from people's "practice fireworks", lol.

HappyAgainOneDay · 04/07/2014 07:39

GoringBit

It looks as if that car was parked improperly and then rolled forward after being left. I expect the handbrake had not been put on properly. If that's the case, at least the driver reversed into the car park space.

mewkins · 04/07/2014 08:00

I agree- the groups are mean spirited and the one I see (which friends share on Facebook) show some very small misdemeanours... I think it's sad that someone feels their soul purpose in life is to tell people off about their parking. What a life eh?

Also sometimes people are forced to park over lines due to those parked adjacent to them. The neighbouring cars move off and your car is left parked over bays..what are you meant to do there eh?

Sallystyle · 04/07/2014 08:18

Yeah, what is with the naked women on YPLAC?

Some of the ones they post are pathetic. It is not a big issue if one wheel is touching the white line like a lot of them posted are.

I except my car to turn up on there one day Hmm

YANBU op.

Sallystyle · 04/07/2014 08:19

BTW I don't park like a complete idiot but a few times due to how another car has parked my wheels have touched the line.

I hate parking with a passion though.

Sallystyle · 04/07/2014 08:23

OMG I was just looking at YPLAC and greeted by porn and some women doing something with a glass.

I didn't mind the nakedness but now it's a porn site??

OwlCapone · 04/07/2014 08:25

It looks as if that car was parked improperly and then rolled forward after being left.

Do multistorey carparks usually have enough of a slope to allow a car to roll forward in a dead straight line?

I think the worst parking I see is around the school at pick up time. Truly amazing given they wouldn't want their precious children endangered.

They are ridiculous. What is with driving and parking?
Everyone is a brilliant driver yet they are always pointing out how terrible everyone else is.

The fact is that everyone drives and parks like a twat at some point and these groups have no idea if they are photographing someone who has made a mistake, is having a terrible day or is someone who does this stuff all the time.

I hate dangerous driving and parking as much as anyone else but the people I know who consider themselves the most proficient drivers are almost always the ones who I don't like getting in a car with.

Because its different for them you see, they are such good drivers/parkers they can handle the extra risk Hmm

I don't like any name and shame FB pages they have no checks and balances

ToAvoidConversation · 04/07/2014 08:45

I don't really have a problem with some of the sites with horrendously bad parking on them.

If you are worried about being photographed for these sites then don't park like a cunt. If you are rubbish at parking then you are a bad driver and you need extra lessons. At no point should you need to park over the lines.

DrDre · 04/07/2014 08:47

Fine by me. If you can't park properly you shouldn't be driving.

MrsWinnibago · 04/07/2014 08:59

At my children's school on a very narrow rural street, people park like twats. The other day a mobile police motoring offences van thing with a camera came and sat there all morning...the officer was telling people off right left and centre and I was SO happy!

I HATE all the "But there's nowhere else..." idiots...er...there is...a street away! Get off your arse and walk a few metres!

Notso · 04/07/2014 09:00

Some of the parents at school started one after the daily traffic jam outside school caused a child to be knocked by a car (thankfully only very minor injuries) and a fight in the same week.
It stopped most people parking outside school so IMO it can only be a good thing.

Sallyingforth · 04/07/2014 09:15

I don't use FB but I did once post a picture on YPLAC and went back to stick a note on the car to tell them I'd done it.
Seems to me it's a public service - nothing wrong at all.

Charlieboo30 · 04/07/2014 09:36

I just think Hmm about people who have time to go around photographing other peoples parking. What a dull life.

angelos02 · 04/07/2014 10:20

I think those that disagree with the site are the very people that can't park and shouldn't be on the road themselves.

The same sort of people that don't realise that middle and outside lanes on a motorway are for OVERTAKING. They are not 'fast' lanes.

Dunkling · 04/07/2014 10:24

I love those sites. I am sick to death of getting to work and finding the car park (public) full to busting and idiots that don't deserve a license parked well into 2 spaces. But I exact my revenge. Knowing I am going to be a lot longer than them starting a shift and most parkers being shoppers, I can squeeze my car it being a teeny Figaro, to still fit slap bang in the middle of the white lines in the next space, thus not possible to be in the wrong whatsoever, and leave them 1cm to get back into their driving seat. Little things and little minds but it amuses me so! Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/07/2014 10:26

I don't mind in principle, but all the ones I've seen seem to be full of blokes making 'hilarious' jokes about women drivers.

taxi4ballet · 04/07/2014 10:32

School parking is the worst... Monster trucks with tinted windows being incompetently manouvered by people who can barely see over the steering wheel. They couldn't park properly if their lives depended on it.

Handy hint - if you're a crap driver, buy a smaller car!

GoshAnneGorilla · 04/07/2014 10:33

I find the naming and shaming aspect a bit creepy.

Am Shock and Hmm that a site about it has become a porn site. Is nothing free from being pornified?

SarahAndFuck · 04/07/2014 10:50

YANBU. Twatty-aggressive pointlessness. I hate bad parking as much as anyone, and I have posted on here before about all the problems we have with parents from the school nearby using our pavements as roads. As such, I always try and park carefully and I don't think I've ever parked badly enough to be featured in a group like this, but I dislike them anyway, just for the mean-spirited whinging of it all.

The drivers featured aren't likely to see their car in the group and often they've done nothing wrong anyway. Nobody is going to learn anything from being included in these groups, they probably won't even see their picture on it.

A couple of friends joined the local Facebook one and it was all people bitching because someone had parked legally on the road in 'their' space.

Occasionally they tried to justify this bitching by saying things like "yeah but it's upsetting my mum, she doesn't like strange cars outside the house" or some such.

One bloke complained that his driveway was blocked. His driveway consisted of a hole in the wall, planks on the lawn and blocks of wood on the road where a dropped kerb should be. He had also just scraped away the grass on the verge outside his house and put down his own paving slab. So again, the driver was legally parked on the road and the bloke bitching about him was a tight-arsed, self-entitled vandal.

And a few pictures of really big vans in car parks. Either the vans were taking up two spaces to avoid sticking out on the to road or they were using one space and sticking out onto the road. Both are apparently unacceptable to the group but surely better a long vehicle takes up two spaces than blocks a road?

There was also someone parked outside the hospital, in a long parking bay with no individual spaces marked in it, who was taking up more than his fair share of the space.

However people come and go from those bays very quickly, and he could have parked reasonably close to a bigger car, which then left and was replaced by the small car in the picture, and the space between them was bigger than it had been when he originally parked.

That group have no idea if he parked and took up more space than necessary or if someone drove off and left him in a big space. The group seems to be run by the most aggressive prat on the planet and it's mostly his friends posting photos for the sake of it.

If someone is parked illegally or dangerously, report them properly. If they are parked badly in the supermarket car park go in and complain.

But if someone is legally parked but you just don't like them outside your house, or you have made your own driveway without permission because you don't want to pay to have the kerb dropped, or you have no idea what went on before you arrived and took your twatty photo, perhaps think twice before posting on a smug and usually wrong internet group about it.

MelanieCheeks · 04/07/2014 10:56

Is naming and shaming likely to change bad parking habits?

specialsubject · 04/07/2014 10:58

I wouldn't get involved in one of these sites - but if you can't park properly, learn. If your car or vehicle (like mine) is too big for spaces, park somewhere else.

if you have to get out to check you've parked properly, do it - I do, no shame!

and yes, the school run parking on the zigzags put there to keep things safer... Angry

settingsitting · 04/07/2014 11:02

It makes me uneasy too.
Sort of the start of lynch mob mentality.
