Power walking.... Fast? Or school run kind of walking?

ChocolateTeacup · 01/07/2014 20:25

How fast and how much do you weigh

ChocolateTeacup · 01/07/2014 20:26

Around 36lb assuming you are not over eating in anyway

ChocolateTeacup · 01/07/2014 20:26

That is at an average speed middle weight

juneybean · 01/07/2014 20:27

Depends how much you weigh now?

TillyTellTale · 01/07/2014 20:30

Will you stop to buy a chocolate bar on the way? That's why I gave up exercise. Too expensive.

Sarsaparillajones · 01/07/2014 20:32

Assuming average speed that's around 100 calories and frankly you don't get much for 100 calories! Some fruit and plain yoghurt, a small finger of chocolate, a couple of biscuits....... So it will help you loose weight and get healthy but on its own unlikely to result in massive change. Plus you'd need to make sure you didn't up the treats to reward yourself afterwards.

Mind you once you can do that with ease, you may find you go up to 45mins, then start c25k, and one day you'll wake up and find yourself doing Shred, at least that's what happened to me!

How much do you want to lose ? Running is fab to help you shrink pounds and shred for inches!

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 01/07/2014 20:38

It's about 100 kcals, depending on your current weight (MFP says about 100 kcal for 30 mins walking 2.5 miles / hour if you're about 10st). That's 36500 kcal per year. 1lb apparently equals 3500 kcals so if you ate the same as you do now, you would lose 10lb. This maths is flawed because it depends on your current weight and speed of walking (and obviously what you eat and how your body metabolises that). Additionally if you lose weight, you'd burn less calories by walking.

creampie · 01/07/2014 20:52

Doesn't work like that.

Chances are you'll eat extra calories to make up the deficit unless you are very mindful about not doing so.

Exercise alone has many benefits but if weight loss is your primary goal, just increasing exercise probably won't cut it

WillWorkForMoney · 01/07/2014 21:35

I got a dog and walked 2 miles/40 mins everyday. I didnt lose a lb :( I think your body become accustomed to your new exercise so that its just normal. Iyswim

wobblyweebles · 02/07/2014 02:12

I burn 150 calories walking for half an hour, I do around 3.5-4mph. No idea what that works out to per year in weight loss. I don't eat back the calories.

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/07/2014 07:43

Got a dog walked 30mins twice daily in the week, at least 2 hours each day at the weekend, continued sensible eating and l lost three stone in a year. However, I worked on brisk walking and I now walk at just short of 6 miles per hour.

ICanHearYou · 02/07/2014 07:47

Even at 114kg, carrying a 15lb load, I only burn 199 calories in half an hour. Fortunately my baby is double that weight and I will be doing the walk twice a day!

Making a loss of around 500kcal a day, which is equivulant to a small meal.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 02/07/2014 09:17

Try caloriesperhour.com. It's great and can do all sorts of calculations like that for you. Helped me lose 3 stone over the past two years

WebbedPuddles · 02/07/2014 21:22

I weigh 10st now. Just thinking of school run walking.
