To tell my neighbour I would kick him

If I saw him kick my cat. She was just peeing in his pretentious little walled garden on his drive. What a complete arsehole. But that is not where I would kick him SmileAngry rant over.

I now want more cats now. Get a sonic cat scarer I've used them in town gardens when I didn't have cats.

BramshawHill · 02/07/2014 10:08

Bigdog - to be fair I'd be more bothered by a dog who was capable of ripping a cat to shreds living near me than a cat who kept wandering through my garden...
I've always had large dogs but while they might chase a cat, they would never have harmed one.

Numanoid · 02/07/2014 10:13

I agree with BramshawHill , also like dogs, but I'd be also be more concerned about a dog that would maul a cat like that. Likewise, if a dog is a risk to other domestic pets and/or people, it should be muzzled and/or tied to its kennel or something similar (humanely, with its lead and collar, of course) when outside.

I've been bitten by a dangerous dog which wasn't properly restrained - I realise it wasn't the dog's fault (and didn't report to avoid the dog possibly being put down), but the owners knew it should have been restrained in the presence of others.

I think it's perfectly normal to feel upset if your cat gets knocked down, it's a risk many cat owners have to take to allow their cat freedom.

kali110 · 02/07/2014 10:20

No yanbu at all. What a knob.
My cat goes next door and does his business. Neighbour doesn't threaten to kick it. Probably as we live on a street dominated by cats so wouldn't know which one it was!( and hes a relative and has been won over or given in to my fat ginger thing).
Who threatens that though??
I don't like walking in dog shit but i would never want to harm one because of it.
Would like to know how you're supposed to stop a cat doing their business in other peoples gardens, i shall have to tell my three.

kali110 · 02/07/2014 10:25

Bram, there were some kids by me last week who were walking past the front garden and they said "look at the cat "lets set ( insert dog name) on it" Probably would have done if they hadnt have noticed me standing behind the car!
I was so livid. It was a massive dog too. I would have severely injured rescuing my cat. Just couldn't believe i could hear something so cruel :-(

kali110 · 02/07/2014 10:31

Sir chen, some species of hedgehogs are pets. I have one.

PickleSarnie · 02/07/2014 10:33

The argument that "all other animals - hedgehogs, foxes, birds etc do it in your garden so why shouldn't a cat?" is a bit ridiculous. Cats are pets. The other animals that poo in other peoples gardens aren't. The issue is that cats can't be controlled. And that's why I don't think they should be kept as pets. They are fairly anti-social with their pooing, fighting and maiming (but rarely killing outright which would be at least a bit less cruel) birds and mice just to play with.

Obviously I understand that cats will continue to be kept as pets regardless. But people will continue to be pissed off at them crapping in their gardens. Which is totally understandable. He was wrong to threaten but you don't sound like you're justified in taking any sort of moral high ground.

maninawomansworld · 02/07/2014 10:36

The parallels drawn between dogs and cats are not valid really. The difference being that it is an offence to not have proper control of your dog - this includes making sure it does not leave your property and go walkies thought the neighbourhood peeing and pooing wherever it wants and mauling cats / children etc.

If my dogs caught a cat they would rip it to pieces - you should have seen what they did to the rabbit they caught in the orchards the other week. One dog ate the head, another ate the back end!

BarbarianMum · 02/07/2014 10:40

Dogs were once allowed to wander around shitting at will. Then society decided that was not acceptable, responsible owners now walk their dogs and pick up after them.

I would be entirely comfortable in a world where cats are not allowed to roam freely shitting where they will but instead confined to the house and garden of their owner.

maninawomansworld · 02/07/2014 10:52

^LOL at "train your cat"!
You can't train cats.^

I know, so keep them locked up.

They are meant to roam the neighbourhood at night.

So are dogs, packs of wild dogs / wolves roam their territories just at wild cats / big cats do. We have just decided it would be better to keep domestic dogs locked up.

And you can't compare cat poo to dog poo, which is 100 times more offensive.

Yes you can - it's poo, it is just as unhygienic if a child gets covered in it.

Do you think all the foxes/hedgehogs/badgers etc which also come and poo on your property should be trained as well?

I shoot foxes. I'd shoot badgers too if it were legal. Hedgehogs are fairly scarce round here

isitsnowingyet · 02/07/2014 10:57

Oh great - another cat thread - these come around with alarming regularity. As a cat (and dog lover) I would like to point out, as is necessary on these threads, that it is people who are really screwing up the environment and the world generally.

Ahem,

bigdog888 · 02/07/2014 11:15

My dog is a very common breed traditionally used for hunting small animals. They generally have a very high prey drive. Completely harmless to other dogs and people - in fact they're one of the most gentle, affectionate and lazy breeds, unless you happen to be a small furry animal like a rabbit, squirrel or cat, in which case you're fucked.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/07/2014 11:29

Loving the comment about keeping cats locked up by someone who on another thread almost burst a blood vessel at the thought of a dog being kept at home all day.

I can't stand these bloody cat threads - cats go outside, they take a shit, they wander around and no we can't train them - they have their own minds. However, my DS does like to attempt to train our cat and she does humour him occasionally.

Dogs who are a danger to small furry things are also a danger to small humans - I would be far more worried about that than a cat taking a crap in my garden.

Chattymummyhere · 02/07/2014 11:36

Cats should be kept in...

My dogs would kill and eat a cat happily they are trained hunters. Got one of my own chickens recently my bad but they where very efficient in their pack no waste apart from a few feathers.

If a cat come into my property (which includes garden) then my dog was safely restrained due to be confined to my property it's not my fault if your cat becomes a snack, fortunately my next door knows this and so does her cat and we all get along great, she only lets her cat out supervised and it has never left her garden. Win win

Chattymummyhere · 02/07/2014 11:37

Dogs who eat small furry things are not a damager to going children. That's stupid and been proven time and time again about prey drive. Dogs can tell the difference between a person and a cat/rabbit/chicken. Even a blind one because we all smell different.

kali110 · 02/07/2014 11:41

What about the cats that want to be pets?none of mine were from cat homes. All strays that were found sleeping in our buahes or under the car. In an awful state. Then would come in and try to steal food and a bit of kip whenever they could. I took them in and now they are in good health and are members of the family. They get scared if they think they are locked out.
One hides when theres lightening after being a stray for several years.

kali110 · 02/07/2014 11:42

Agree betty

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/07/2014 11:43

Look, I have a friend who takes in rescue/retired grey hounds. She has confirmed to me that if her dog saw a small toddler crawling about they would go after it - that's what they are trained to do. As a result, when my DS was a baby and toddler she/i would never ever ever leave him and the dogs together, she was very very careful about that. So no, it's not a stupid comment at all.

If your dog should kill and eat a cat then i suggest he is the one who should be kept in.

Chattymummyhere · 02/07/2014 11:56

So one persons comment vs years of being watched and research put in... Ok

Oh and I no plenty of retired greyhounds that don't see children crawling as prey so maybe she needs a better trainer.

Why should I keep my dogs out of my garden? It's my property they cannot get out of my garden if a cat decides to enter that's not up to me, they are also worked. Would never leave any dog alone with a child.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 02/07/2014 12:02

No, she is a person who has looked after many grey hounds in her time, she knows her dogs and quite frankly I would rather listen to her than trust some research I have found on google. I think it's a given anyway that most sensible normal people would not leave a small child unattended with a dog. You are of the the same mind set so obviously you are not willing to just go by research either.

Anyway, this thread is about cats not dogs. My cat goes outside, I personally don't agree with indoor cats but each to his own. Like I said before, I am willing to get my neighbour a water pistol to squirt at her and if he actually sees her crap I'm more than happy to clear it up. Short of doing that there is absolutely sod all I can do about her wandering around. Why she can't go in the other neighbours garden who are actually nice people is beyond me but cats have a warped sense of humour and seem to love going where they know they are not liked.

PickleSarnie · 02/07/2014 12:21

Perhaps your other neighbours that are "nice" Betty are that way because your cat doesn't shit in their garden? Not even nice people like their garden filled with poo.

bigdog888 · 02/07/2014 12:28

I think we would all agree that you should never leave any dog unattended with small children no matter how gentle it is. My dog can certainly tell the difference between a rabbit sized dog and a cat - loves to play with little dogs, wants to kill every cat we meet.

Patrickstarisabadbellend · 02/07/2014 14:50

Western Australia has the right idea. All cats are spayed and chipped. You need a licence to have one.

In my street of 17 houses we have 15 cats. The hedgehogs are long gone. I can't hear any birds. Cats are destroying our wildlife whether you like it it not.

Cats are not native to Britain but they are destroying native species.

I don't have the answer to this growing problem but we certainly should tighten up the laws on breeding.

MyFairyKing · 02/07/2014 14:58

For those who don't want cats in their garden, get a dog. Best cat repellant ever.

GreeboOgg · 02/07/2014 16:05

I agree with BramshawHill , also like dogs, but I'd be also be more concerned about a dog that would maul a cat like that. You want me to muzzle or tether my dog, in my own garden (secured and dog-proofed at my expense), so that your pet can have the freedom to roam around my property? Are you for fucking real? Your pet = your responsibility.

I like cats, but some of the owners... christ.
