Protocoll for courtesy visits

I recently had a visit from a woman who was a relative of a friend of my sisters. She was visiting the city and had been given my name and my telephone number. Of course, out of courtesy I agreed especially as this was her first visit to this country. She arrived accompanied by her two children aged 6 and 9 whom she had failed to mention. Not a problem as they were well behaved. However, they had brought nothing to keep themselves amused and the board games and baby toys I had were of no interest to them. AIBU to have expected that (a) their mother would have mentioned she would be bringing them or (b) She would have told them to bring something with them to keep themselves amused.

Eh? What on earth were you doing inviting a strange woman into your home?

How odd!

Sorry OP, are you from a culture where this is common? I've never heard of it before, and certainly wouldn't do it myself!

Of you're flying in I wouldn't have brought anything - games and toys take up too much room

They could either watch tv or be taken out and run tagged during the day (my favoured method)

Steeleyeyespanx neither of your comments answered my question and yes it is considered good manners in my husband's culture. Lauriefairycake I did consider tv but I only have one small living room and felt it would be bad manners to have it on while having visitors. I turned them out into the garden with some bubbles and a rather soft football but I did feel sorry for them. I always used to take something with me to amuse my children when they were young.
