teenagers innocently entering parks, people removing their clothes in their own bedrooms or legally parked cars on public roads?

Birdsgottafly · 29/06/2014 12:45

The parking thread was ridiculous (so was the naked man).

I was going to contribute. I know many people who use empty shop car parks, to be picked up for night work etc.

I equally know of people, from my area that because they have been being targeted have had to park their car somewhere with a camera etc.

There are many on here that don't seen to know any different people or lifestyles.

Pumpkinpositive · 29/06/2014 12:46

Pumpkin but even with cigarette butt littering, in what universe is more sensible to use police resources than just pick the bloody thing up and put it in the bin?

I agree. I was just trying to think of a commonality - besides common sense - between the three examples you cited, as to why the "general enquiries" clause wouldn't apply.

On the face of it, I don't think any of them are criminal offences, but obviously unsure on the littering front.

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 29/06/2014 12:51

Wasnt there one once when man in a vaan shouted boo! out the window on the street and her xhikd jumped? She was advised call 101 as it was cimmon assault or something?

Fideliney · 29/06/2014 12:51

Aha. Shame there isn't a way of codifying common sense Hmm

I think you've hit on something there Birds

Really TakeMe?

OP posts:
BackOnlyBriefly · 29/06/2014 13:00

YANBU I thought the whole point of 101 was that it was the same as 999 but not so urgent. For things that could wait until they were less busy.

As for general enquiries I'd take that to mean things like "has my wallet been handed in". If we take 'general' too literally it could mean "where shall I go for my holiday" and I'm pretty sure they didn't mean that.

Meeeep · 29/06/2014 13:01

Is it just me that wouldn't give two hoots about a neighbour wandering round in the buff? I frequently dart from bathroom to bedroom after washing my towels and forgetting to put new ones in the bathroom. I also wander about in my underwear while looking for clothes to wear or iron. It's only skin Confused

BackOnlyBriefly · 29/06/2014 13:02

It just struck me that calling 101 is a replacement for "I'm gonna.. I'm gonna.. TELL on you!"

I was torn about the parking at the end of the cul-de-sac thread and the naked tenement-dweller.

On the one hand I think 'live-and-let-live' and on the other, I grew up with Shaw Taylor telling us to keep 'em peeled.

That also reminds me of a current thread about whether we should trust '70s TV favourites, or indeed whether they were favourites at all and whether some of us trusting souls were daft.

Yes, this is a TAAT and I don't care.

In any case, I have done some extensive googling and now realise that my interpretation of the word 'tenement' was wildly out of kilter and I seriously crave some of those gorgeous flats in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Fideliney · 29/06/2014 13:07

Well it's a TA eleventy thousand threads really.

But, but, but, you were 'torn' about the cul-de-sac- parking thread limited? Why?

Mines is being refurbished at the moment. New windows, fireplace ripped out, tiled over.

I would say there is no inherent soundproofing in the many of these buildings. They used to put ash between the floors to deaden the sound but any efficacy has long worn off. If you live below someone with stripped floorboards, the impact noise can be a nightmare.

But the amount of light through the windows is amazing, high ceilings with cornices and rose ceilings.

Redglitter · 29/06/2014 13:16

to be fair, calling 101, doesn't necessarily mean the police will come out. You may get given advice on the phone, for minor things like a broken car window or a stolen mobile phone a report can usually be taken over the phone.

For things like people walking down the street wearing a hat then when the call is passed to the control for action they can decide that it's not a police matter.

999 is meant for life threatening or ongoing incidents. phoning 999 or 101 your call goes to the same people for despatch so you don't get priority calling 999, contrary to what many think Smile

I got this wrong last night. Loud karaoke party at 11:15pm two streets away. I phoned 101 and was told I should leave an answerphone message for the council. Luckily they stopped being antisocial soon after.

Redglitter · 29/06/2014 13:24

That would all amount to indecent exposure and harassment so yes a police matter. very different from a one off isolated case of a guy naked in his bedroom

Redglitter · 29/06/2014 13:25

Cherry I wouldn't say that was getting it wrong though. There was an issue. you didn't know what action to take, phoned 101 & got pointed in the right direction Smile

Pumpkinpositive · 29/06/2014 13:34

Yes, these are all conjectures and they didn't happen, and from that particular post, I got the impression she wanted to find something to report (the computer use thing for example; I'm a writer, and I'm on my PC all the sodding time, working

I was the original OP on that thread. I am on the computer a lot at home for work, as I said then. I certainly wasn't looking to report anyone for computer use and if I'd been looking to "find something to report" then I'd hardly have come on Mumsnet to ask, would I? I accepted that it wouldn't be appropriate to call 101 and didn't do so.

This is the problem with TAATs, although I accept it wasn't Findeliney's intent when starting.

I'll leave this thread now so Fog can carry on making up whatever she likes.

limitedperiodonly · 29/06/2014 13:35

But, but, but, you were 'torn' about the cul-de-sac- parking thread limited? Why?

Because sometimes I'm a bit of a busybody with too much time on my hands Fideliney

There. You forced it out of me. Proud of yourself? Wink

Meanwhile, someone, somewhere close is having a barbecue. They haven't invited me but the cat has wandered off. He's way more charming than me so they'll feed him when he gatecrashes. Me, not so much, but he might drag something back...

Fideliney · 29/06/2014 13:38

Grin @ limited

Eh oop pumpkin and looking are having fisticuffs.

OP posts:
Fideliney · 29/06/2014 13:44

In fairness, I did only give three examples in the OP but this was supposed to be a thread about a widespread MN phenomenon.

I'm a bit unsure of the wisdom of adding more examples.

OP posts:
TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 29/06/2014 13:47

Someone should report me for all the spelling mistakes above. Im so sorry...

LookingThroughTheFog · 29/06/2014 13:49

Apologies for any offence caused, Pumpkin. I didn't intend it. I do recall that some of the supporting evidence for the other person's nastiness was that he was on the computer all the time, which is what I was referring to.

Like I say, I didn't read much of the thread, so I apologise if that was clarified later on - it's just the two things I got from the first post was 'he's naked in front of his window' and 'he's always on the computer.'

Fideliney · 29/06/2014 13:49

Report you for spelling mistakes!? Confused

Who to?

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 29/06/2014 13:50

Fuck me. The cat has just come in with some raw chicken.

I took it from him because I disapproved of the marinade. It looks suspiciously like it's from a jar.

He is yowling angrily at me but he'll thank me in the long run.

Fideliney · 29/06/2014 13:52

Wash the chicken like a proper MNer limited and give it back to him.

Take I can't find the van driver saying boo thread, you can't remember anything else about it can you?
