To think Jolene's mate..

..should have kicked that man into touch rather than beg Jolene not to take him?

I am finding myself rapidly more irritated by lots of songs that I actually used to love. Still love the songs but bloody hell I want to knock some sense into them.

So AIBU? Or am I ageing out of romance?

Dolly has been married forever to someone who stays 'on the farm' and completely out of the limelight.

'I will always love you' was supposed to have been written for her former musical partner, Porter Wagoner. She wrote the song for him when she left the partnership to go solo (he was supposed to have been in love with her though no evidence it was ever more than a professional relationship between them). So she certainly has a history of relationships with men.

But the rumours of being gay have always been there. Supposedly, she had (has?) a very close female friend (same sort of situation we read about with Oprah and her female friend, and Whitney Houston and her close female friend too). Who knows what the truth is, and honestly, it doesn't matter.

Aliceinvodkaland · 28/06/2014 20:09

can someone post the jolene lyrics so we can interact with this thread? Grin

Aliceinvodkaland · 28/06/2014 20:09

at first i thought you were talking about the hair bleach!!! Grin

EssexEmmaB · 28/06/2014 20:29

Woohooo trillions! She was amazing wasn't she? I loved the little sparrow song too - so beautiful and haunting. I thought all the stories she told made the night even better and I wasn't even a Dolly fan before.

softlysoftly · 28/06/2014 20:46

Alice

If you are too young to know the lyrics Get Orf of May thread! Grin

Early in fairness I should have posted "lighthearted" Wink

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green

Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
There's nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, Jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don't know what he means to me, Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He's the only one for me, Jolene

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him even though you can
Jolene, Jolene

Ooh baby love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
But all you do is treat me bad
Break my heart and leave me sad
Tell me, what did I do wrong
To make you stay away so long

'Cause baby love, my baby love
Been missing ya, miss kissing ya
Instead of breaking up
Let's do some kissing and making up
Don't throw our love away
In my arms, why don't you stay?

Need ya, need ya
Baby love, ooh, baby love

Baby love, my baby love
Why must we seperate, my love
All of my whole life through
I never loved no one but you
Why you do me like you do?
I get this need

Ooh, ooh, need to hold you
Once again, my love
Feel your warm embrace, my love
Don't throw our love away
Please don't do me this way
Not happy like I used to be
Loneliness has got the best of me

My love, my baby love
I need you, oh how I need you
Why you do me like you do
After I've been true to you
So deep in love with you

Baby, baby, ooh till it's hurtin' me
Till it's hurtin' me
Ooh baby love
Don't throw our love away
Don't throw our love away

If Ms Ross turned up on the Relationships thread with that narrative, she'd be told to contact WA and LTB.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 28/06/2014 20:58

I posted about Jolene's lyrics not making sense on a thread this morning. I do love the tune though.

What's all this 'was'? Dolly is at Glastonbury, isn't whe?

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 28/06/2014 21:04

'YOU make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman' is another one with a great tune but the lyrics from a woman highly dependant on someone else for her happiness and sense of identity. (I can never remember the right words when singing loudly iver the radio in the car, so not that it has moved me that deeply).

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 28/06/2014 21:09

Looking out on the morning rain
I used to feel so uninspired
And when I knew I had to face another day
Lord, it made me feel so tired

Before the day I met you, life was so unkind
But you're the key to my peace of mind

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

When my soul was in the lost and found
You came along, to claim it
I didn't know just what was wrong with me
'Til your kiss helped me name it

Now I'm no longer doubtful of what I'm living for
And if I make you happy I don't need to do more

'Cause you make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

Oh, baby, what you done to me?
You make me feel so good inside
And I just wanna be close to you
You make me feel so alive

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

You make me feel
You make me feel
You make me feel like a natural woman

Aliceinvodkaland · 28/06/2014 21:09

thank you old lady now i know it makes no sense at all!!!

Nousernameforme · 28/06/2014 21:28

It always tickled me that the b side to stand by your man was D.I.V.O.R.C.E.
I much prefer the white stripes version of jolene love jack whites voice

EssexEmmaB · 28/06/2014 22:07

Dolly at o2 last night and tonight. Headlining Glastonbury tomorrow.

Harriebabe · 28/06/2014 22:12

Thought I'd missed something important on The Archers for a minute ....

WanderingAway · 28/06/2014 22:22

I much prefer whitney's version of I will always love you.

BankWadger · 28/06/2014 22:24

Please don't stab BankWadgers! I felt all funny reading that.

I've heard the bank teller story before yet didn't know Dolly was married. Go figure.

JamNan · 28/06/2014 22:28

Lordy I thought you were talking about the Archers
Blush

CerealMom · 28/06/2014 22:33

If I could have a girly night in/dinner party, Dolly and Sandi Totsvig (sp?) would be top of my list. Interesting, witty and funny.

countessduckula · 28/06/2014 22:45

I utterly love Dolly, but I love this song more. I love how pleased with herself Loretta looks while she's singing!

And I don't love metal/heavy rock/whatever, but I saw Lana Del Rey earlier, and she looked fed up. And Metallica at least look fun. But then I'm old, and I don't get out much! Grin

ShergarAndSpies · 28/06/2014 23:00

Did anyone else read a while ago that Dolly is covered in pretty 'girly' tattoos all over her arms and chest?

But she refuses to show them off, hence always wearing long sleeves.

Weird huh?

littlebitmiffed · 28/06/2014 23:02

thanks now I won't be able to sleep for this song swirling round in my head all night!

Stickaflakeinit · 28/06/2014 23:05

I'm a staunch feminist, but I don't analyse classic songs like those mentioned in this way. They're encapsulating a feeling/mood/moment. They're not a manifesto o n how to deal with cheating bastards.

Who's to say that after she wrote this, Jolene's mate didn't LTB and go NC with the guy and Jo-bloody-lene? Grin

I love those heartbreak country sings, slushy R&B etc regardless

OldLadyKnowsSomething · 28/06/2014 23:32

It was actually when I was working in my most feminist job, with WA, (in the early-mid 90's) that I realised how misogynistic so much of my favourite music is/was. I'd just bought an LP of The Supreme's biggest hits, and as I danced around the livingroom, doing my housework with the music up a bit, singing along, it slowly dawned on me...

Mind you, a lot of modern stuff isn't much better. There's a song that's used for some car ad atm that involves removing all clothing bar high heels, I'm not familiar with the artiste or the rest of the lyrics, but my skin crawls every time it comes on the tv.

DoJo · 28/06/2014 23:38

ShergarAndSpies

I was just going to check whether I had imagined that whole thing, but I saw it too, plus some photos of slight clothing slips where you could see them (assuming they weren't photoshopped, although I think Oprah confirmed that she had seen them or something). Dolly is one of my favourite people ever - she does loads of great work for charity, is charming but takes absolutely no bull shit, and even changes outfits for every single photo shoot she does when doing billions of interview to make sure that each interviewer/photographer gets an original image to go with their story. Love her!
