I am 32 and I've had spots since I was 13. Some times it's better than others but at the moment I'm going through a really bad flare up.

We took the dc to their school fete this morning and we all got soaked. We went into the toilets to sort our selves out and I made the mistake of looking in the mirror. My skin looked awful and so did all the make up I've put on to try to hide the spots. My dh said to go home and get changed and then go back to the fete again(it's only a 10minute walk). Once we got home, I said I didn't want to go back and that anyone could stay with me if they also didn't want to go. Everyone wanted to go so I've just waved them off and quickly gone into the bathroom to wash my face and put my spot cream on.

I really wanted to be with my family but I just can't go back talking to all the other parents when I'm so embarrassed about my skin.
I double cleanse twice a day and put Duac cream on that I get from the doctors. I'm always asking for a referral to see a skin specialist but I'm told the spots are not bad enough.
I only drink water and don't eat chocolate. What else can I do? Can any one give me some ideas? I know it's wrong to hide away so please don't be hard on me, just really need help.

Read this.

SquigglySquid · 28/06/2014 17:33

Well, acne takes months to clear up. So even if you get a new product, don't expect a quick fix.

I'm not sure what cleared my face up because I had it pretty bad in my early 20's. I think it was hormonal birth control stopping my periods to be honest, and then it just never came back.

Being outside in the sun (without makeup) can help too.

But try not to let it get you down. There's something weird and distracting about every person. But I doubt most people will judge or let it get in the way or normal conversations.

And this.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 28/06/2014 17:34

Chipped that's interesting, I have noticed that when I go low carb (so little sugar) my skin is much much better.

Snowwhite22 · 28/06/2014 17:45

Just reading the cheat sheet, the lady is recommending fish oils. Has anyone used this?

I found active stability silver to be brilliant on hormonal spots. (I have PCOS). You can spray it on larger areas, or dab onto individual spots.

Try to see if you can get hold of some handmade soap made from lard ie old fashioned lye soap. If if has a decent superfat it won't be drying like commercial soap is. If you can't find any please PM me.

Anomaly · 28/06/2014 18:04

My skin is currently the best its ever been. I've stopped washing it with any kind of soap or cleanser at all. I just use bio oil. I use it before showering and last thing at night.

I do think you should go back to your GP or get a new one. No reason for you to feel like this there are lots of treatments available.

Shockedmum75 · 28/06/2014 18:26

After never really having anything more than a pimple or two throughout my teens, I found after having my daughter at 23 that I had the worst spots ever. They tended to be in two patches on my chin and my forehead. No matter what I did (leave them, play with them, pick them whatever) they ultimately ended up looking like cigarette burns. Even when the surface healed, I could still feel that whatever it was, was there, deep under my skin and it would only be a matter of time before my face was scabby again.
My doctor did refer me to a specialist, but they had to be able to see and test the spots before they could do anything, and Sod's law whenever my appointment was my face would "clear up". They did give me an open appointment to come back when I had a flare up. BUT before I got a chance to go, I had a spot right in the middle of my forehead, that was bright red and angry. I went to the chemist and they gave me freederm. Within 20mins all the redness had gone, and within a couple of days the deep down remains that were always there had gone as well!
I know it is different for everyone, but a simple OTC teenagers cream stopped my spots. I have never since had a spot like it, although I do still have the scars quite prominently (to me at least) on my forehead.
It was a horrible couple of years, they looked so much like burns that people would actually comment on them, but my biggest regret was not being firmer with the doctors. Don't underestimate the effect that this has on your mental and emotional well being. And don't be afraid to put your foot down to get whatever you need to get this sorted.
Glad your dh is the supportive type as well. Perhaps he could go with you to the gp to make it clear the effect this is having on all of you as a family?

soaccidentprone · 28/06/2014 18:33

La roche posay is brilliant. I still get a few spots around my mouth, but they are small and usually go within a couple of days.

bubalou · 28/06/2014 18:42

Bare minerals is known for help not only to over but to treaty jingling spots.

Without bare minerals make up I have had days where I wouldn't have left the house!

Smile
bubalou · 28/06/2014 18:42

Haha - bloody phone - what's jingling spots! And not over but cover! Confused

MehsMum · 28/06/2014 19:13

I can only echo some of the advice here: change your GP or try a different one in the same practice. Spots are really miserable: they look horrible (especially to the person whose face they are on) and they bloody hurt, and they can scar.

I still use Clearasil (which works for me). Hope you feel happier soon!

MaryBennett · 28/06/2014 19:17

Make an appointment with another GP this week. Tell that GP that your life is being altered by this and you need (demand) help. Tell the GP exactly what happened.

I'm on Lymecline every year for about two months with crap break outs that have left me with scars.

The drugs work and I feel 100% more confident.

Do it OP. this is the last weekend you will feel this way and good luck!

MaryBennett · 28/06/2014 19:23

And change your pillow slip very often.

Yes to changing the pillow, I need to do that more often. Dh has got the cetaphil so I'm going to try that before I go back to docs, I don't like changing creams as it takes ages to find out if they are working. I'm hoping if I change my cleanser and start moisturising it will help. I've been on lymecline for months but gave me really bad headaches :(

Reddish · 28/06/2014 19:45

Another vote for La Roche Posay, it has transformed my awful skin and while I still get some spots they go away really quickly. I use the Physiological Cleansing gel (make sure you get the gel and not the cream) as a face wash twice a day and the Effaclar Duo morning and night. Nothing else has ever had such amazing results. escentual has a third off La Roche Posay products at the moment - until the end of June - and Boots have a 3 for 2 offer. I'm so sorry that having bad skin has ruined your day, I've been there, it's rubbish.

Snowwhite22 · 28/06/2014 20:30

Thank you so much reddish, everyone has been so lovely and helpful. Loads of advice, I am going to take note of everything. It's clear lots of people have felt how I feel, thank you for understanding.

My friend has success with blue light therapy.

Purplepoodle · 28/06/2014 20:50

Dalacin t lotion (there's an alcohol version 'solution' but it's very drying. It really helped my skin as did a zinc based product but the name escapes me at the moment.

It's took me going it the doctors with no make up on and bursting into tears to convince him to refer me

FiftyShadesOfGreen4205 · 28/06/2014 20:53

Roaccutane was the only thing that worked for me. Thirteen years on I still have clear skin.

Purplepoodle · 28/06/2014 20:54

Mostly get yourself some really good foundation to cover up. Bare minerals didn't have the staying power for me so I used Lancôme or Clinique liquid foundation, applied with a brush then concealer applied where needed with a small brush. If you face is covered in spots and red like mine was a corrective green base can work wonders

Snowwhite22 · 28/06/2014 21:01

Wow thirteen years, that is amazing. It sounds like a wonder drug, and I'm sure I would have to go to doc with no make up on and tell them how I feel to get a referral.
I used to use the corrective base years ago, maybe I should give it a go again, thank you.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 28/06/2014 21:03

I took roaccutane 7 years ago and have had fewer than 7 isolated spots since.
