To not want to replace the iPhone 5s that I broke?

I broke my dp's iphone 5s today. He's insisting it's replaced with an iPhone 5s, I've offered him my iPhone 5 and I'll get a crap phone, or I'll buy him an iPhone 5c - but no, it has to be an iPhone 5s! Gah I know aibu but they cost over £500.....

Hoe broke is it?

hercules1 · 21/06/2014 19:16

Does he not have insurance?

dietcokeandcadburys · 21/06/2014 19:16

YABU, you broke it, you buy him an exact replacement. Presumably he bought a 5s because he wanted a 5s, not a 5 or 5c.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/06/2014 19:16

If my dh broke my phone I'd want a like for like replacement unless he really, really couldn't afford it.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/06/2014 19:17

Didn't he have insurance?

Rideronthestorm · 21/06/2014 19:17

If he didn't have it insured then it's partly his fault. No way would I not insure mine.

HonoraryOctonaut · 21/06/2014 19:18

Insurance? I claimed on mine recently and it only cost me £50 excess. He might have it with his provider.

Can you afford it? Surely a DP would understand if you couldn't.

Foolishlady · 21/06/2014 19:18

No he didn't have insurance. Yeah, I know I have to replace it I guess. What a pain....

Claim on the insurance and offer to pay the difference on his insurance renewal?

MaryWestmacott · 21/06/2014 19:18

Is it repairable? Have you checked? A new screen would set you back about £50 (I've had to replace mine twice, the joys if 2 walking preschoolers).

Before you buy anything else, see if it can be fixed.

Fairylea · 21/06/2014 19:19

How is it broken? Could apple fix it if you take it to one of their stores?

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 21/06/2014 19:20

HIBU... Buy him an Android phone which won't be made of eggshell thin glass which shatters if you look at it funny He will thank you in the long run ;)

MaryWestmacott · 21/06/2014 19:20

Oh and how did you break it? If you just dropped it, then you are pretty much certain to be able to fix it (the phone repair place near me does new screens in an hour), if you drove the car over it, it might be worth checking if it's covered on your home contents insurance...

anyoldname76 · 21/06/2014 19:21

It might be covered under your house contents insurance.
Can it be repaired?

Katz · 21/06/2014 19:21

Have you taken it to an applestore they do replacement phones for a lot less than new.

napoleonsnose · 21/06/2014 19:21

How broken is broken? If its the screen that is smashed then there are plenty of repairers out there who can replace the screen at much less cost than buying a new phone. Is it still within the one year guarantee period? If it is you could go to an Apple store and pay whatever the reduced price is to get a replacement phone.

pinkyredrose · 21/06/2014 19:22

Yep home insurance often covers mobiles. Plus how is it broken? It could be fixable.

Hurr1cane · 21/06/2014 19:22

How is it broken? Smashed screens can be repaired for about £50 depending on where you live

pinkyredrose · 21/06/2014 19:23

Ps. If he bought it less than a year ago the manufacturers warranty will still be valid.

BlackDaisies · 21/06/2014 19:26

How did you break it? Can you afford to replace it immediately. Not everyone has a spare 500 lying about. I would push for him to take your phone until you've saved up enough to replace it. If he's a long term live in partner I would hope something broken by a complete accident might be replaced by joint funds or hopefully covered on your house insurance?

PassTheCakeitsbeenatough1 · 21/06/2014 19:26

I'd check your house insurance and whether it would still be under warranty. But if it's not covered then I don't think YABU - it's your fault, yes, but do you share finances? Could your finances take a £500 hit for the sake of a phone? I'm not sure me or my DH would be too bothered about having a slightly worse phone if it meant not stretching our budget.

If he bought such an expensive phone I'm not sure as to why it wasn't insured in the first place? If he expects a like for like replacement then perhaps he should have?

YANBU, it's a phone. There are other phones which do the same thing for less money.

JohnnyBarthes · 21/06/2014 19:28

How did you break it? Did you deliberately throw it on a barbecue, or out of the window of a speeding car? Did you accidentally knock it from somewhere precarious that your partner had stupidly placed it?

McBear · 21/06/2014 19:32

Very intrigued as to how you broke it beyond repair???
