To not want to replace the iPhone 5s that I broke?

I broke my dp's iphone 5s today. He's insisting it's replaced with an iPhone 5s, I've offered him my iPhone 5 and I'll get a crap phone, or I'll buy him an iPhone 5c - but no, it has to be an iPhone 5s! Gah I know aibu but they cost over £500.....

Can you look into getting him a refurbished or second hand one if it can't be repaired? Try cash converters or somewhere like that.

Itsjustmeagain · 21/06/2014 19:36

I had to replace mine recently because I put it in my bag with a can of coke and somehow the can of coke was pierced and drowned the phone!

Luckily my bank account includes phone insurance so I had a new one within a week!

If you broke it though then unless your going to have to go into debt to replace it, you should.

gamerchick · 21/06/2014 19:36

well how is it broken? If it's just the screen then they're easy to fix.

Helgathehairy · 21/06/2014 19:40

You have to buy him a new 5s.

2 weeks ago DH broke my ipad. It's not insured. Actually DD broke it but he was watching her at the time so his fault. I wasn't annoyed that it was broken, it was an accident but if he'd started on about not replacing it because I didn't have it insured id be really pissed off. Luckily he had a new one ordered for me that evening.

All this depends on you having the money - DH did.

JohnnyBarthes · 21/06/2014 19:43

We have separate finances and are reasonably well off, but if one of us had to shell out £500 to replace a broken phone that would mean not going away for a holiday or something.

I'd be putting up with the less-new iPhone in your boyfriend's shoes, basically.

pinkyredrose · 21/06/2014 19:45

Helga has the answer - it all depends on having the money. Who'd have thought!

CalamitouslyWrong · 21/06/2014 19:46

It is not 'partly his fault' for not having insurance on his phone. That didn't contribute to the phone being broken. Talk about blaming the victim.

JohnnyBarthes · 21/06/2014 19:47

I have an HTC One M8, which is slightly cheaper but as good if not better than an iPhone 5s.

It is also uninsured (thanks for the reminder to get my arse in gear though). If anyone breaks it, that'd be my idiotic look out.

Garcia10 · 21/06/2014 19:48

It may also be insured through his bank account. My DH lost his (also a iPhone 5s, had no clue how expensive they are until he lost it!!) we put a claim in to Smile and in 5 days he had a new phone. Worth checking.

WanttogotoDisney · 21/06/2014 19:50

It should be covered on your home contents insurance.

ballinacup · 21/06/2014 19:50

Do people really demand replacement gadgets from their OH? Is it not just one of those moments where you mutter 'don't worry about it' through gritted teeth and leave it at that?

Helgathehairy · 21/06/2014 19:52

What I meant was if DH had had to go into debt then I wouldn't have wanted a new ipad but if the op has the money then she should just buy the phone.

smaths · 21/06/2014 19:54

Look at napoleonsnose's link - it will cost £216 to replace at the apple store with an "as new" refurb. Not quite so painful.

Nessalina · 21/06/2014 19:58

I assume you insure the contents of your home? If you have accidental damage cover on your contents, or you have 'personal possessions' cover for items removed from the home, then the phone is covered. It won't need to be named on the policy. Just claim on that, that way you'll only have to pay the excess! And it's a myth that home insurance rockets up if you claim - it may go up a little bit, but £500 is a relatively small claim.
I left my laptop on the train last year (fool! Hmm) and I paid £30 excess on my insurance and they provided a brand new laptop. Simples Smile
If not an option (and if you don't have insurance, for gods sake get some!) then the apple store are amazing. Even if you have to pay a bit for a reconditioned phone, they may be able to fix it!
Yes, he needs a new 5s, but not a brand new £500 necessarily - how old was his phone? A reconditioned apple 2nd would be a fair replacement, definitely.

CarmineRose1978 · 21/06/2014 20:18

My partner trod on my beloved ipad, and replaced it with a mini and a big ipad because he felt so bad. We also got the old one fixed up (not as new, the replacement screen pops out of the casing sometimes) and gave it to his parents.

Billygoats · 21/06/2014 20:38

I'm guessing you don't have shared finances as DH would never demand I buy him a replacement.

Even so I broke his iPod a few years ago , he'd lent me to take away for work , when we were still just dating and he put it down to an accident, there was no demanding I replace it for him. I never did replace it either in the end as others things came up and we just forgot.

Foolishlady · 21/06/2014 20:38

Have dropped it into a repair shop but they don't sound hopeful... I really fecked it up! Will check home insurance. Damnit, really wish it had been my phone, I don't need it so much. I can afford it - well when I get paid. We have a shared account but also individual accounts too. Think I'm just going to have to suck it up!

I shut it in a car door...

HOW DID YOU BREAK IT?

JohnnyBarthes · 21/06/2014 20:44

x-post but even so, not enough detail.

Runesigil · 21/06/2014 21:19

Whether you get the old one fixed or buy him the exact replacement phone, make sure you also get insurance Grin

Foolishlady · 22/06/2014 12:06

Feeling grouchy about this today. He smashed up our car last year - not insured - and the repairs (over 4k) came out of joint funds yet he is getting snippy with me over this..,

OP posts:
fawltydoge · 22/06/2014 12:10

you didn't have car insurance?!

MaryWestmacott · 22/06/2014 12:12

not having car insurance is more of an issue, or did he smash it in a way the insurance wouldn't pay out???

Seriously, why do'nt you have adequate insurance for your stuff?

JohnnyBarthes · 22/06/2014 12:14

Jesus.
