To think that if you have a dog you should clean up after it

Have just watched the ignorant prick man who lives in the next street let his dog shit all over the grassed area in front of my house AGAIN. It's been going on for years and he never cleans it up. Another dog walker took him to task about it once and he got abusive and confrontational, the arsehole. I've reported him to the Council but still he does it.

He's not alone, either - loads of people use the grass outside as a dog toilet and don't bother cleaning it up. When DD was little she came in covered in shit after playing there (had just moved in and didn't realise it was covered in crap). Never let her play there again which is a shame as we have no outside space - the grassed area is actually designed to be for children to play on as none of the houses/flats here have gardens.

It's always people from a few streets away and it fucks me off so much. Filthy antisocial twats.

YANBU.

whereisshe · 21/06/2014 14:11

YANBU, it's inconsiderate. I feel the same way about inconsiderate cat owners as well.

If you spray vinegar or something like Urine Off on the grass it will no longer smell like a toilet to the dogs who go there.

D0oinMeCleanin · 21/06/2014 14:12

YABU. Obviously. Picking up poo is gross.

bayrans · 21/06/2014 14:16

YANBU.

I'm fed up of cleaning shit from the wheels of my daughters buggy because some irresponsible dog owner can't be arsed to pick up after it.

Can't you sling the shit outside his front door? That might stop him.

glenthebattleostrich · 21/06/2014 14:19

A neighbour let's their dog shit all over our cul de sac without cleaning it up. I've taken to returning the shit it leaves on my garden, usually right outside her gate or beside her car door.

Elsiequadrille · 21/06/2014 14:20

Of course you should clean up after your dog. Quite right

LastMinuteLil · 21/06/2014 14:24

YANBU. But if you check the eleventy billion other threads on this topic you will see that nobody thinks it unreasonable for people to pick up after their dog on here. Ever.

Unfortunately, there are knobheads in the world who don't care. Not all dog owners are like that.

WooWooOwl · 21/06/2014 14:24

YANBU. Cat owners should clean up after their pets too.

Elsiequadrille · 21/06/2014 14:27

It's trickier with cats though. Unless they're confined to garden or house cats (my remaining cat is a house cat, so uses tray).

Nomama · 21/06/2014 14:28

Didn't take long, did it?

Elsiequadrille · 21/06/2014 14:29

People actually do seem to pick up after their dogs in my area, but there's a worrying trend for hanging the little bags up in trees or bushes Confused

rumbleinthrjungle · 21/06/2014 17:07

Obviously YANBU!

Most of the other dog owners in my local area carry spare bags with them and we all often pick up after other people's dogs as well as their own if we see anything lying around, our kids play in the woods there too. (I suspect sometimes we're picking up after deer and badgers and foxes too but hey ho, kids don't need to roll in that either.) Anyone seen not picking up after their dog becomes persona non grata in the local dog walking community, it's definitely not condoned.

But there are always going to be the lazy, stuff you buggers who don't care. Report to your local council and get someone to sit in a van and watch, and then fine him, that's what the bylaws are there for. It's not ok and the means are there to get it stopped.

OscarWinningActress · 21/06/2014 17:18

OMG. Ew. Here, you would be lynched if you let your dog go in public and didn't pick it up. You'd be lynched and disemboweled if you let it go on someone's garden and didn't pick it up Shock. These threads always amaze me...You would just never see dog mess left on the sidewalk....it's a massive taboo. I think you need to move, OP Sad.

On another thread on this subject, someone mentioned a lack of garbage cans; is that a problem where you are? I think if you don't have public trash receptacles liberally placed around neighbourhoods, that can be a deterrent to picking up (not a valid excuse, obviously...still wickedly irresponsible). Perhaps this is something you can work on your council for? Little doggy waste bags are readily and cheaply available from pet stores, dollar (pound) stores and the grocery store so that shouldn't be an issue either. It's part of the cost of owning a dog.

Roobix04 · 25/06/2014 14:21

YANBU in my opinion we should be allowed to fling poo at anyone who doesn't pick up after their dogs. It's gotten so bad where I live that I actually feel like applauding whenever I see someone cleaning it up.

DogCalledRudis · 25/06/2014 15:17

Pick up the dog poo in a bag then hand it to the neighbour saying -- your doggy left you a present. If he's not a complete twat, he'd be embarrassed.

VegetarianHaggis · 25/06/2014 16:22

Scoop it up on a shovel and deposit it on his front lawn.

HaroldsBishop · 25/06/2014 16:28

Next time return it to him by means of a shovel - or go and take a shit of your own in his garden....

specialsubject · 25/06/2014 16:48

a small sign has worked here, although it is a fairly quiet lane - but the grass verge is my responsibility to mow and I object to being covered in dog poo. The sign is very polite (although it was tempting not to be) and does seem to deter the airheaded.

or just put up a sign saying 'this area treated with rat poison, keep dogs off'. Whether you actually put poison down is up to you.

lack of bins no excuse. No-one has to own a dog, take the bag home.

Boudica1990 · 25/06/2014 16:59

This annoys me no end. When my youngest dog was a puppy she had horrible tummy problems so often produced very loose stools on walks. I would kneel on the grass and use about 4/5 bags plus kitchen roll to attempt to clean it up best I could, and then I would see others just walk away from very easy poo to clean up.

I would return the dog poo to him!!

0pheliaBalls · 25/06/2014 17:33

Update: Got an email from the Council saying the matter was 'resolved' and sure enough, yesterday when he walked his dog, he picked the crap up after it. VICTORY!

Now to sort out the 1258844 other idiots still letting their dogs shit outside Sad

OP posts:
MehsMum · 25/06/2014 17:37

YANBU. And I have dogs. I hate seeing crap in the middle of the sports pitches, because if it goes on like that all dogs will be banned from them - including those owned by people like me who pick the stuff up!

maninawomansworld · 26/06/2014 13:21

Secretly video him or photograph him next time he does it, then go and post the pics / footage through his letterbox with a polite letter saying did he realise it is illegal and he can get a £1000 fine for doing it.
Go on to say that if you see him do it again you will forward said photos / video along with his address to the police.

Bet he stops.

Xcountry · 26/06/2014 13:28

I believe from when I was training that there are some exceptions to this though, if I remember rightly - working and service dog handlers are not required to pick up after the dog, but normal pet owners are required to. And on that note I think Roobix would be flamed in some tabloid for flinging poo at some blind person with a guide dog etc
