To think that my daughter doesn't need shoes yet?

My daughter is 11 months old, happily cruising and (sort of) walking with a walker.
Even in the cooler months she pulled socks off and has never had any form of pram shoe or slipper, now it's summer she's barefoot all the time and obviously loves it.
I am BU to want to dry slap everyone that suggests that she NEEDS shoes NOW!
Especially for my Mother who has pointed out every frilly, pink monstrosity she has clapped eyes on and is adamant that she will get her her first pair of shoes (I don't think so mommy dearest!)

No, I don't think she needs shoes yet. I think I was told that they should be walking for 6 weeks. Something like that anyway, was a long time ago.

MrGeresHamster · 20/06/2014 19:46

YANBU, they don't need shoes really until they are on their feet outside.

MiniSoksMakeHardWork · 20/06/2014 19:48

Yanbu. I got shoes for my first when she started nursery at 9 months. I soon learnt! Ds1 and dts didn't have shoes until they were walking confidently. Dt1 was 20 months. All I did do was get them some suede soled slipper socks for tootling about outside in when weren't in our own garden.

YouTheCat · 20/06/2014 19:48

I was told they should be walking (not just cruising) for 3 months but that was a long time ago.

She doesn't need shoes yet as I don't suppose she's quite at the running round the park stage yet.

MaryBennett · 20/06/2014 19:49

You are right. Your dd will thank you for it. And buy blue!

wigglesrock · 20/06/2014 19:50

I waited until mine were well on their feet, properly walking. I never bothered with pram shoes, slippers. Mine just had bare feet, socks for like 5 minutes or tights. Although my Mum paid for each of my kids first pair of shoes, it can be a bit of a tradition.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2014 19:50

She doesn't need shoes until she is walking on something potentially harmful. Barefoot is always best.

ContinentalKat · 20/06/2014 19:51

Of course she needs shoes! Are you not aware that humans need shoes to support their feet, which would otherwise crumble under the strain of supporting the rest of the body?!?

no, she doesn't need shoes, and I still get the stabby rage thinking about the 2 or 3 pairs of shoes that parents and pils bought for pfb

bayrans · 20/06/2014 19:51

My mother Implies that she doesn't look like a proper girl with out some sort of frilly sock/Mary Jane combo....

I hate to break it to her but she'll end up with a wardrobe full of converse like me (probably).

YANBU I only bought shoes at that age because my little one wanted to join in at the park with his older brothers. All depends if she's going to come into contact the ground on a regular basis. And if she does she only needs one pair!

CrohnicallyExhausted · 20/06/2014 19:53

DD got her first real shoes very soon after starting to walk independently- but she didn't walk at all till 15 months and within 2 weeks of starting she was steady on her feet, walking outside to the car, going to the park etc so needed them! I really don't think I could have waited till 3 months after she started to walk.

weyayechickenpie · 20/06/2014 19:54

Ahh I love the sock stage I heard that they only need shoes when they can confidently walk. My dd didnt walk until she was 17 month. I took her to clarks for her first pair when she started cruising they wanted to see her walk around the store and because she crawled they said to hold off and come back when she walked.

CelibacyCakeandElevatorMuzac · 20/06/2014 19:54

My Ds is 15 mo

Walked a week after 1st birthday.

He has no shoes other than soft cruiser shoes that he wears outside as he kept scraping his toea on the path.

I'm not planning on getting him proper shoes til Autumn.

With DD (10yo),she walked at 11mo and I went the next day and bought her shoes!this was Dec though.

Can honestly say it's done her no harm.

ToffeeMoon · 20/06/2014 19:56

DS his first shoes when he started walking outdoors, unaided.

No need before then.

Can't stand seeing shoes pointlessly perched on the ends of babies feet.

Mine had cruising shoes when she started walking, just for outside. Then when her feet finally grew to the size for walking shoes she had those. Even now only wears shoes outside the house, whenever we are indoors (home, playgroup, friends houses) she is barefoot. I heard that is best for her feet so thats what we do.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 20/06/2014 19:58

I refused shoes for ages, sent the DTs to nursery in those moccasin slipper things whilst they were toddling..
Then popped into Clarks Bicester Village to get them fitted on the off chance... And they both took off like whippets across the shop. We bought the shoes.

cardamomginger · 20/06/2014 20:01

YANBU.

DD had shoes at 10 months, but she was walking independently and competently and was clearly ready to go for proper walks outside. Kids' shoes are bloody expensive and their feet can grow at an alarming rate. Enjoy the shoe-free stage and the lack of additional expense that comes along with it!

ipswichwitch · 20/06/2014 20:01

Took DS1 to get him measured for new shoes and the assistant tried to measure 6mo DS2! I said I think he's too little and since he's only 6mo, not walking yet, and she said "oh but we do shoes for babies in his size." I totally fail to see the point if they're just going to get pulled off and chewed, not to mention the foot development aspect.
OP, yanbu, especially with the choice of converse :)

RidgyTipper · 20/06/2014 20:05

I hate seeing very young toddlers in shoes. I find it strange here in Britain that kids don't run around barefoot in the park. Where I'm from it's not massively unusual for children to only where shoes at school; the rest of the time they're happily barefoot.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/06/2014 20:08

I wish DD could run barefoot in the park, and I'm sure she would love to. Unfortunately to much broken glass and dog shit to let her :(

HeyN0nny · 20/06/2014 20:12

There are three good reasons why children don't run around barefoot in British parks: broken glass; syringes; dog shit.

I bought shoes for my DC when their feet were regularly coming into contact with the ground outside - walking unaided for very short distances, walking much further holding onto hands.

Hobbes8 · 20/06/2014 20:15

You could always get her those socks that look like Mary Jane shoes (they also have versions that look like converse)
