I can smell it. Booger breath is gross.

MrsWedgeAntilles · 20/06/2014 17:00

Oh no, no,no! Thankfully its only in consultations.
Now I've got this image in my head of me and my colleagues roaming the waiting room sniffing like Roald Dahl's Witches, periodically dragging off some poor soul for treatment. That would add a whole new dimension of odd to a trip to the clinic.

Londonrach - I always think infection smells like nyang sounds, can't write that in my notes though :)

LadyNexus · 20/06/2014 17:02

Nope I can smell it too!

And actually my parents used to run a company where'd I'd come into contact with elderly people regularly.

When I was a child I used to tell mum 'he's going to die soon, I can smell it'

Haven't smelt it since thank god.

(Yes, they died days after...spooky music!)

weegiemum · 20/06/2014 17:04

I can smell colds, and d&v before it starts (a "stale" smell).

And general illness.

But then I have synesthesia and "see" words in colours, people have colours etc.

FlamingGalar · 20/06/2014 17:09

I can smell when my DC are getting/are ill. I can't smell illness on anyone else though. Comes in handy with the couple of hypochondriacs I have!

hmc · 20/06/2014 17:14

Blimey, and I thought I had a keen sense of smell.....until now

Velocirapture · 20/06/2014 17:45

I can smell it on DS. Don't get close to other people.

MiniTheMinx · 20/06/2014 17:50

Yep, I can smell it too. A friend of mine always used to say "I have a stinking cold" I guess I thought this was a well known saying because everyone can smell a "stinking" cold.

I also know the minute I have caught a cold. I get this chlorine like burning up my nose, within a day I have the symptoms of a cold. So if I know someone has a cold, and I get that burning sensation which lasts only a matter of seconds, I know I will get the cold.

todoaboutnothing · 20/06/2014 18:02

The people who are describing thinking in colour or sound and the line between senses and environment, feelings, memories getting blurred are describing Synesthesia. I myself have it! There are different versions as well.

Arion · 20/06/2014 18:05

I can't smell colds but I can smell when my skin is tanning. It's a particular smell that I only get when I get a tan, not just from being outdoors.

londonrach · 20/06/2014 18:09

Todo you do. I love it as sometimes the colours are lovely, although I can make up tried as the dreams are very visual. I see people in colours too. I'm dyslexic so thought it linked to that. My dyslexic has been a gift.

VioletGoesVintage · 20/06/2014 18:13

I've often wondered if other people could do this! As well as smelling colds, I can smell if my DC are ill or about to become ill. Wonder what the science behind it is?

londonrach · 20/06/2014 18:15

Bacteria etc build up

MiniTheMinx · 20/06/2014 18:15

I think it might have some evolutionary benefit. A bit like some people get headaches when there is a storm on the way.

Passmethecrisps · 20/06/2014 18:16

Weird as I was having this discussion with my DH recently. I assumed everyone could smell colds or rather the mucus. He was insistent that mucus has no smell. It defo does to me

todoaboutnothing · 20/06/2014 18:17

If you look it up on wiki londonrach you will be able to read about some of the different types. I'm not sure if it is linked to dyslexia but I'd say it could well be related.

It's really hard to describe isn't it. I've just tried to type what I experience and it sounds like nonsense! I have to say though, I think it improves sex Blush. It's like having an extra experience with the physical and emotional part of it. Embarrassed now!

MsGee · 20/06/2014 18:18

I can but only on DD.
DH has never believed me, so I feel quite pleased that it is a 'thing'.

I take a lot f pleasure in being right when it comes to DH

londonrach · 20/06/2014 18:23

Todo don't be. I can dream in red (a very bright red) and sometimes the smell is unbearable. Have seen colours that aren't colours. People are in colours. I find it useful. It's strange....although I didn't realise that until I asked someone about the colour she had... Please todo you have a gift. Do you remember all your dreams...... I do.

londonrach · 20/06/2014 18:24

Please everyone I'm not mad i don't tell people about the colours and smell but my mum knows...

AnotherSpinningFuckingRainbow · 20/06/2014 18:27

I can smell when people are thirsty, and when they have a tonsil stone.

The smell of a C.diff poo is very distinctive!

todoaboutnothing · 20/06/2014 18:34

I have told a few people but generally keep it to myself for fear of being called bonkers! Yes I remember all my dreams and they are incredibly vivid too. I suffered with night terrors through my teens and often could not actually describe what was so awful about the dream because it couldn't be worded without explaining that a colour, movement or other non visual aspects of the dream changed. This made awful dreams sound not at all frightening to most people. Thankfully I don't usually have dreams like that any more, only when under a lot of stress.

People, letters, numbers and shapes are colours to me as well. Just when I thought I couldn't say anything stranger.... I taste in colours as well! Certain foods have a colour that matches the depth of flavour.

sarahquilt · 20/06/2014 18:34

Smell colds? You sound mental.

JontyMyers · 20/06/2014 18:35

I use the sprays all the time and nasal inhalers i still get the odd cold though its not a cure just a prevention but its not like its expensive also i dont get that close to people on buses the smell seems to travel around the bus like a bad fart especially if there is more than one person with a cold

Todo (hoping you for real) but glad I'm not alone.... Will look into it. If you want to pm me about this you welcome but really hope you not teasing me. I love my dreams as the colours and smell help me. I've always be grateful for my dyslexia. Without it i wouldn't be running my second business and doing what I am. I'm so lucky I was given this gift.
