To ask all Chaletians to get ready for Madame's birthday?

Pop to the splasheries my lambs and after you've brushed your hair till it shines we'll have a quick practice of 'I sing of Margaret so fair'.

Once we've finished casting the movie, that is....

Ooh What Makes You Beautiful sounds perfect for Madame's birthday Robin. And if you have married her long lost cousin by then he could come along and sing as well Smile

JoeyMaynardsghost · 08/07/2014 14:46

Ooh we're practising for Madame's next birthday already? Grin

I was just thinking, would have been a lot easier for EBD if computers were available when she began writing. Just think of all the C&P she could have done for the descriptions of the Speisaal, dormitories, splasheries etc!

All that time saved could have meant a few more books written! Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 14:51

She could have copied and pasted all the Sales and Christmas plays as well!

Vintagejazz · 08/07/2014 14:55

And kept a spreadsheet to remember everyone's ages and form levels.

Vintagejazz · 08/07/2014 14:56

Oh and just kept pasting in 'eyes like pansies' 'delicately pretty' 'exquisite colouring' etc when describing any Maynards/Russells/Bettanys.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 16:53

'Perfect features cut with a cameo-like precision'

Ruebarb · 08/07/2014 17:03

EBD could have used one of those family tree software packages so we (she) could understand all the inter-relationships between the characters. Joey's number of children might have caused problems! Dates of birth could have been input as well so she could keep track as to how old her characters are at a given time - some of them seemed to have perfected the art of time travel!

Ruebarb · 08/07/2014 17:11

Vintagejazz - there is an unabridged copy of exile on ebay for £24.50 + postage on a buy it now basis. Have seen cheaper on ebay - best one was a few months ago for £10.99.

Vintagejazz · 08/07/2014 20:01

Thanks Ruebard. Will check t out. The problem is that I live in Ireland and sometimes the postage is nearly as much as the book.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 21:00

Isn't the transcript on OneDrive unabridged?

MooncupGoddess · 08/07/2014 22:02

Having read the unabridged transcript of Exile, I feel some sympathy for Armada's decision to cut that whole chapter... it doesn't actually say much. Some of the other detail I hadn't read before is nice, though.

Ionacat · 08/07/2014 22:07

I've just finished the Plas Gwyn years, but can't work out when the war ends. It is definitely war time still with Lavendar Laughs but can't quite work out which book is the first after the war. It is annoying me somewhat so can anyone help?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 22:27

It's still war time in Gay From China. Talk of army transports etc and Gay's brother is a Wing Commander who gets sent to China.

Um, what comes after that? Mystery is war time, but don't think Tom Tackles is, nor Rosalie.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/07/2014 22:28

Jo To The Rescue happens around then too - not sure at all whether there are any war references in it. Anyone?

MooncupGoddess · 08/07/2014 23:04

Tom and Rosalie should be set during the war, because the triplets are four. But there is no mention of the war at all... It's rather odd.

mummytime · 09/07/2014 00:14

Well the interesting thing is how quickly the Chalet school seems to get past rationing - it seems to get lifted much quicker in Wales than elsewhere.

Happydaysatlastforthebody · 09/07/2014 00:33

Ok who am I? 20 questions?

I play the chello and have smoke grey eyes?

I dislike Joey Bettany and see her as a conceited specimen of school girl?

I am very strong and can carry all the cases for Frau Joey and her family?

I inherit a French chateau?

I had polio and am a 'picture child?'

I did not think?

I have eyes like English wood violets

Snails on my window send me hysterical

I have twin sisters and lived on a Scottish Ireland until the war starts

I am kidnapped as I have red hair

I get up at 5am to prepare a picnic as it's fine weather

We pepper the food at the chalet school and no one can prove it. Who are we?

My mother died in India and I find my godmother?

I have red hair, am powerfully built and my sister has a really unusual name?

My sister is pretty but I am far more lovely?

My parents made me feel like an incubus?

I pulled Joey through some tough illnesses as a child

I taught the chello at the chalet school and sold my house to the Maynard's?

I was the original games mistress at the chalet and I am little?

I boiled a clock?

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 09/07/2014 06:41

I dislike Joey Bettany and see her as a
conceited specimen of school girl?
Matron Besley

I did not think? Carola

I have twin sisters and lived on a Scottish
Ireland until the war starts
Shiena Macdonald

I was the original games mistress at the
chalet and I am little?
Miss Nalder

This is fun! I will add some questions later.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 09/07/2014 06:41

Bold fail. Blush

RobinHumphries · 09/07/2014 07:30

I think they mention in one of the books that the Welsh place has a farm attached to it so that supplies them with dairy.

Happydaysatlastforthebody · 09/07/2014 08:03

Nell yes go on do some. Very cathartic and an antidote to some of the mad threads on here.

Vintagejazz · 09/07/2014 10:49

I inheirit a French Chateau - Simone
My sister is pretty but I am far more lovely? - Wanda
Snails on my window send me hysterical - ~The horrible Matron (can't remember her name)
I pulled Joey through some tough illnesses as a child - Madge or Matey?

TooSpotty · 09/07/2014 10:50

Here goes. A wasted youth.

I play the chello and have smoke grey eyes? - Jacynth Hardy

I dislike Joey Bettany and see her as a conceited specimen of school girl? - I am torn between Matron Webb and Eustacia Benson. I think it's Stacie.

I am very strong and can carry all the cases for Frau Joey and her family? - Gaudenz?

I inherit a French chateau? - Simone Lecoutier/de Bersac

I had polio and am a 'picture child?' - Philippa Maynard

I did not think? - Carola Johnstone

I have eyes like English wood violets - Len Maynard

Snails on my window send me hysterical - Matron Webb

I have twin sisters and lived on a Scottish Ireland until the war starts - Shiena Macdonald

I am kidnapped as I have red hair - Flavia Ansell? Or the other one.

I get up at 5am to prepare a picnic as it's fine weather - Anna

We pepper the food at the chalet school and no one can prove it. Who are we?

My mother died in India and I find my godmother? - I think this is Jo Scott but I didn't remember her mother dying. I have always been mystified why, with such scads of interesting Old Girls, EBD picked Maisie Gomme for this bit.

I have red hair, am powerfully built and my sister has a really unusual name? - Tony Barrass?

My sister is pretty but I am far more lovely? - Soooo many possibilities! A Lucy? A Chester?

My parents made me feel like an incubus? - Again, a few possibilities.

I pulled Joey through some tough illnesses as a child - Madge?

I taught the chello at the chalet school and sold my house to the Maynard's? - Herr Helfen, another person to never ever forget Joey.

I was the original games mistress at the chalet and I am little? - Grace Nalder

I boiled a clock? - Corney, Evvy, Lonny - probably plus others, although think Margia had outgrown them by this point? Could be wrong.

I've been trying to figure out the relative dates of books like Jo Returns, New, and Exile, and I finally thought I'd figure it out (Jo Returns as Autumn 1936, New as Summer 1937, and Exile starting in February half term 1938). The continuity of Head Girls makes sense with this, as does the date of Uncle Ted's death (Jan 1937, referenced as "the January of last year" in Exile). However, chapter 5 begins with Jack thinking about how he'd known Joey since she was 13, and she was now nearly 21 (I make that 19 last November), Sybil can only be just 2, yet she can infuriate Rix by chanting "You're just a cousin, David an' me belong!", and Marie's just had a baby whom she's "waited three years for", even though she only married at Christmas 1936, less than 18 months ago.

I give up! There is absolutely no internal consistency!
