to let 7 y/o follow a juice diet

As per the other thread I'm struggling with my ds and especially for breakfast.

Was following the advice to make sure he gets complex carbs (whole grain cerial), skimmed milk and sugar free squash. Now looking into it more this seams bad old advice, I've gone back to normal juice.

Myself and dh have been following a juice diet for the last few weeks, basically a fresh juice of 5 vegetables and 2 fruit for breakfast and we feel amazing for for it.

D's really doesn't like eating in the morning, would it be OK to just let him have juice only like us?

When you say that you've realised that this is bad advice, I hope you don't mean from your other thread on here? I read most of that (couldn't stomach the lot) and from what I could see there were literally hundreds of conflicting, competing and sometimes completely bonkers suggestions. If your son has a dietician or someone who is involved in ensuring that he gets all the nutrients he needs, then this should be the person whose advice you take, not a bunch of posts which basically ended in a contest to see who could object the most to any given combination of foods.
I hope you find a way to feed your son that gives him everything he needs, but I think you need the input of an expert who actually knows your son to ensure that you are going about it in the most sensible way, and the way most likely to lead to success.

Ds3 hated breakfast as well, from when he went to school which started far too early for food in his opinion. He is now 14yo, and still hates it. He has DibbleDob.

2 Weetabix, diced fresh mango or banana, 300ml milk (choose your fat rating). Blitz with a liquidiser, Put in cup and sip through a wide straw on the way to school.

parentalunit · 19/06/2014 20:17

Bananas do have sugar, but there is so much fibre that the sugar won't spike blood levels as much as other fruits.

Either way...up to you. Could you try out one of the options at the weekend, and see how your son's behaviour is an hour or so after breakfast? If he's hungry, then try something else.

Viviennemary · 19/06/2014 20:20

If it's only at breakfast I can't see the harm especially in this hot weather. He might just not feel like eating breakfast. It will probably only be a short term thing. But absolutely not follow a juice only diet even for a day.

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 20:20

Modre
Dibbledob sounds yuck but I love the name !

twistedsista · 19/06/2014 20:22

Dojo I've been given lots of advice from dietions over the years, hasn't helped so maybe I'm being crazy but I'm reaserching stuff online that seams like a good idea.

Can't go on trying to force doen cerial in the morning when he just doesn't have the stomachs for it at that time.

Except as I recall it was the nutritionist advising sugary cereal, squash with sweeteners and low fat milk. Which is an atrotious breakfast.

OP I think the veg smoothie sounds better than the above. If you can get some coconut milk in there, or coconut cream (tastes lovely) then that would be even better. Though not sure what they'd taste like with veg!

StealthPolarBear · 19/06/2014 20:26

Parental the only fruit I can see is the kiwi

sunshinecity17 · 19/06/2014 20:30

Home made veggie juice is a fab breakfast for adult or child. It's fill to the brim with vitamins, minerals and enzymes

but woefully lacking in calories to see him through from bedtime to lunchtime !!!

lowcarbforthewin · 19/06/2014 20:33

Oh and I was thinking about healthy breakfast ideas, given that you are struggling.

I would suggest

Eggs on toast (wholegrain)
Peanut butter on toast
Eggs and bacon (occasionally) or sausages
Selection of cheeses, oatcakes (and yes olives!), ham
Porridge with fruit
Smoothie made from coconut milk, almond or peanut butter, banana, cocoa powder
Pancakes with lots of porridge oats in the batter, smeared with a nut butter or Greek yogurt, fruit compote
Breakfast muffins either oat bran muffins or egg based muffins or frittata - lots of recipes online
Homemade granola
Avocado on toast
Greek yogurt with honey, nuts, fruit
Fish fingers with butter

I appreciate he's fussy, but one of the above might tempt him. Lots of cultures don't have a separate breakfast anyway; they eat rice and beans or rice and fish, or other leftovers. Would he munch on a chicken leg or some ham from supper before?

ModreB · 19/06/2014 20:35

Waltons it does actually taste like liquidised cereal, quite nice. But according to Ds's dietician (also food issues & allergies) very healthy and an ideal breakfast for a child who won't chew.

sunshinecity17 · 19/06/2014 20:39

Who lets a 7yo "refuse" breakfast?

well that's an interesting one! How do you make them eat? Force feed them? Stand over them Miss Trunchbull-esque making them force something down they just can't stomach?
Way to create issues I'd say!!

Branleuse · 19/06/2014 20:41

like one of those geese. A funnel

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2014 20:46

That juice sounds great!

I juice quite a bit, made some tonight and dc all wanted it!

I juiced pineapple and apples, blitzed in the blender with yogurt, banana, ice and spirulina! It looks a light turquoise colour

It's unusual I have as much fruit as this tho, green juices are my favourite.

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 20:48

My teenager refuses breakfast frequently before school . I pop more in her lunch box knowing that she will start dipping into it on the bus ! I think good parenting is about sneakily getting your own way !

wobblyweebles · 19/06/2014 20:52

sunshinecity17 totally agree. My middle daughter throws up if she eats breakfast.

So... we don't feed her breakfast. Haven't done for about 4 years now. She's still alive and doing fine.

CiderwithBuda · 19/06/2014 20:54

If you add yoghurt to the juice you are adding protein. Can also add protein powder and or almond or peanut butter.

I can't eat first thing either and DS struggles. Some people just can't.

We used to do Cheerios (dry) and a Babybel in the car. That works for a while.

I would love my DS to have something as healthy as a home made juice or smoothie. Today he had weetabix. But will only have with sugar. Must lead to a massive crash. It does with me. I much prefer when he has protein.

kitchensinkmum · 19/06/2014 22:35

Google the raw food family. These children all have green juice for breakfast , fruit mid morning, fruit and veg for lunch etc. there are five kids and all look amazingly healthy . Just have a look and see for yourself. Certainly a good advert for green juice

Waltonswatcher · 19/06/2014 22:41

Kitchensinkmum
You don't need to be a raw food family to look heathy though !
Fgs I am now into threads talking about food ... What the hell am I doing ?
It's just food guys !

Janethegirl · 19/06/2014 22:44

I need to have been awake for at least 2 hours before I can eat. Dd is the same. Dh and Ds can eat the minute their eyes open. No point forcing food down but juice must be better than nothing.

OddFodd · 19/06/2014 22:52

The raw food family look like freaks :(

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2014 23:32

Freaks?? How?

It's just 5 kids with parents.... A family some MNers are.

AnyoneForTennis · 19/06/2014 23:33

*like

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2014 23:39

Fruit juices like that is likely to give himthe squits its toomuch of an adult portion iyswim will he not eat anything at all even a banana or something, he is maybe catching onyou are not eating, I wouldnt let a 7yr okd go to school with out food,

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 19/06/2014 23:39

The raw food family children look fairly standard - one boy looks very thin, but the others look like any random fish finger and chips eating family to me :o The mother looks a little dead eyed... bad photo or tired probably - the father though is clearly using his family as a marketing tool for some kind of dubious "manifestation" pyramid scam psudo religion change your life plan which he makes an income from. Skim reading their title page he says they aren't raw foodists any more, because they want to sell a new path to awesomeness...
